    Welcome back to ship building modelboatguy, it's been a while but it's great to see you come back. Wonderful to see you give RMS Mauretania the spotlight, I did 1/600 airfix scale model of Mauretania and I did her in her 1933 cruise livery with white hull and bright green lower waterline, but that's nothing that compare to your masterful caliber, regardless I had great fun with it. Seriously it's great to see you come back and it'll be a magnificent work of art that you'll produce, no doubt about it. It's great to see Mauretania get some spotlight, she's underated.. really she is, so all the very best with her. Looking forward to seeing this project in progression, happy modelling mate 👍

    Hi. I’ve built that kit. I got the Gold Medal Model photo etch which had the correct net ladders for the forward and rear mast as well as the Marconi wire spreaders for between the masks. It also included the ropes around the lifeboats. For the deck, I used the custom scale deck 186 for the Lusitania. It’s not self adhesive, you coat the underside with something like bond weld press it on and leave it for about 10-12 hours. The deck is expensive but looks magnificent. Another advantage is that when you have removed the cut pieces, the remainder left over is the same wood deck finish for any minor repairs or alterations. As an aside, I think GMM may have ceased trading but their stuff is available through Tom’s modeling. I also purchased the 1/350 scale brass masts (they don’t flex or bend and don’t look like telegraph poles), I used fine ez line black for the rigging and funnels. Check out ebay, it where I managed to find everything. Expensive yes, but my Lusitania looks the part. Enjoy the build

    Mauretania - great choice from my perspective as a naval architect! The three bladed propellers were as built but they cavitated badly due to the early direct drive turbines running too fast (geared turbines came later on other ships). The cavitation caused horrendous vibration and the original props were soon replaced with a four bladed design that was better but still not perfect -no computers in those days. With the hull, note that the anchor pockets are more squared than Lusitania’s rounded ones. The top decks also slightly overhung the hull unlike Lusitania. If building before 1912, you won’t need additional lifeboats and the First Class promenade can remain fully open (partially enclosed later). The engineering book of the Shipbuilder has been reprinted and has plans and many as built photographs -large and small scale versions of different publications were reprinted and you might be able to find a copy cheaply.

    Dude, I don't know whether to be happy or disappointed. Mauretania = hell yes! She's one of my favorite ladies of the sea. Disappointed = Lusitania is my absolute fave. So I'm excited to see how you're going to figure out the differences between the sisters and make it work on the model, but I'm a little sad that you're just not building Lusitania herself. And I am just tickled that you knew about all of those differences. Maybe I'm too cynical from watching too many youtube videos, but most people don't seem to know all those details. One thing to note is that Lusitania made her sister work for that Blue Riband; it took two years for Maury to wrench it away. And when Maury lost it to the SS Bremen, she came within a half a knot of winning it back. Can you imagine how embarrassing that would have been for Germany? Probably would have been funny as hell too... At any rate, I'm looking forward to the build, and I can't wait to see how she's going to look when you're finished. :)

    Hi. I'm also using the fine detail scale decks and ka. Can I ask. Why use black spray paint before glueing down the decks? Simply for the light spread escaping under decks/bulkheads etc? I'm thinking of just using the white and painting the black detail on the forward hatch cover later. Seems logical. I was concerned about any edges that may be showing after installing the scale decks and final fitting but it looks a nice snug fit. Any advice would be most appreciated. Cheers.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, basically it is because the scaledecks are very very thin meaning they show whatever is under them. Some of the decks in the trumpeter kit are quite thick with is good for light bleed, but some are much thinner. Painting everything black first essentially removes any doubt in the issue. If a thin deck had light shining through the scaledecks would appear way lighter. This just reduces that effect as far as reasonably practical

      @TheModelBoatGuy 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

  • @gambitozetosh9878
    @gambitozetosh9878 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hello, I have been watching some of your videos and you have a very beautiful and incredible Titanic, but I have a question, why can the 3D KA pieces be cut without the need to heat a knife, while the China 3D pieces do need it?

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      To be honest there isn’t really a single reason. KA parts tend to have the support material on the bottom, so you can cut and then sand. Whereas China 3D have support everywhere so you have to me much more careful to remove support material delicately. But the main reason is that generally China 3D parts are more delicate so they need to be removed very slowly, where as KA are far more robust

    Hi am doing the hand rails at the bow but I've found out it doesn't meet in the middle how can I see to this is there another part the goes in the centre. I've got the 2 hand rails c17 & c15

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the only way you could sort that is to add additional sections from spare parts. If you are using the KA set, you’ll have spares from the trumpeter kits brass parts. That’s probably the best bet. Mine lined up quite nicely, but I do remember having to tweak the railings quite a lot before gluing down
