  • This is the seventy-fourth in a series of videos I’m going to produce to document the building of my Trumpeter 1:200 model Titanic. In this episode I cover:
    - Painting, adding photo etch and fitting of ventilators to the boat deck.
    - Painting and fitting of the 4 boat deck winches.
    If you want to see more regular updates have a look at my Instagram page (same name as the channel). I post photos as I'm building there so you don't have to wait for the videos to be edited!

    Nice Rob. I agree, patch the ventilator floor for starters. People having a chat in that area may sort it but I wouldn't add any deck loungers there! That's the last place people would want to sit!
    I will be looking at the winch scale, if indeed I need them on my model. I will research that thanks to you highlighting them. Looking good with her bits in place! Regards JH ⚓

      Hi there, yes I think your right on the patch repair. Did olympic change her winch complement during her life then?
      Cheers,
      Robbie

    You've done a wonderful job on this model! For the hole in the deck, why not have a couple of crew working on it, maybe repairing a pipe in the hole...

    You have inspired me to do something like this but without the major expense of the model let alone all your tools. I have ordered the Schriber-Bogen paper model. I'm planning to customize it by making my own railings and ladders, probably using scale decks and maybe some other aftermarket kit. Hoping it turns out even a quarter as good as your Trumpeter kit.

    Looking good Robbie. I this is looking better and better every video. I also like the fearless attitude you go about doing things . Like when you installed the prow hauser in one of the previous videos. Have you given any thought to your next project?

    Was there any special reason why the boat deck winches were coloured green and not white like the rest of the equipment? Maybe to make them stand out? Also, did the model itself have any bearing on the colour you chose for the wall? It makes the colours of the model stand out so well. The intricacy and detail put into the piping work on those funnels is insane!

      Hi Garry,
      This goes back to a sort of tradition.
      Most machinery was (and to a point still is) painted in a colour called machinery green. You’ll often see pillar drills painted green.
      I suspect this was a subtle form of warning, intended to make people aware that these devices move and rotate, which therefore provide danger of trapping hands etc.
      The same colour was used on the windlasses and capstans, again I suspect because they moved.
      While the ventilators have moving parts they arnt very accessible so it would be hard to get your hand or fingers stuck in them as for the most part they were covered in metal sheeting so that would not need it.

      @@TheModelBoatGuy Thank you for the interesting background, I figured there would be some logical reason. Have a great time tomorrow.

    The plating on which these ventilators and other bits and bobs sat on, is that superstructure or were plates added for reason? Just looks odd there's no decking up to and around them. Nice details, gives a lovely sense of completion by adding tiny details.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the plates were additional to provide a solid and level base.
      It’s just a guess but I reckon these plates were stronger than the superstructure would be at that point just to help bear the load of the comparatively heavy ventilators

    • @MartinFutter70
      @MartinFutter70 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheModelBoatGuy coolio, sounds a plausible explanation 👍

    I’ve always found the boat deck ventilator layouts to be one of the most frustrating aspects of Titanic research. There’s barely any clear photographs of them, they’re no longer there on the wreck, all the plans are just a little bit different, etc.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep it’s a bit of a pickle. And there were a good few modifications made to Titanics ventilation based on learnings from Olympic which I think contributes to plans being a bit contradictory!

  • @TheCondo5
    @TheCondo5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Robbie looking great.
    Quick question about the ventilators. Is there a reason so many face aft? Are they all like exhaust?

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I’m not totally sure tbh. As a rule of thumb I find the motorised ones are almost always intakes.
      I suspect the only forced extraction would have been to remove gasses, from say the boiler fires, galley or fireplaces around the ship.
      Various ventilators had movable heads so that you could move the aperture to face forwards or backwards to take advantage of prevailing wind conditions. I imagine all ventilators except those extracting gasses would have been drawing fresh air into the ship. The act of doing this would create something of a positive pressure which would expel foul air. Positive pressure is a bit of an overstatement, but provided you pull enough fresh air into the depths of the ship the bad air will find a way out! That is certainly the methodology used on underground railways, so I suspect similar on ships.

    Hello my friend, how are you? I have a question about the Scalesdecks kit, apparently there are faults especially at the level of the waterway, can you tell me about the floor ka please? Do KA parts still fit? Cordially

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there,
      On the whole i have found scaledecks to fit very well, there is an issue with one ventilator but that’s about the only issue I have had.
      Waterways etc are a little bit of a lottery due to the printing, but if you use the KA set this has waterways anyway that you can overlap so it covers the issues completely.
