  • This is the seventy-first in a series of videos I’m going to produce to document the building of my Trumpeter 1:200 model Titanic. In this episode I cover the aft railings, signage and docking bridge equipment:
    - Fitting all railings on the Poop Deck.
    - Fitting propeller notice boards.
    - Justification for black boards over red.
    - Fitting the docking bridge railings.
    - Painting and fitting all docking bridge equipment.
    If you want to see more regular updates have a look at my Instagram page (same name as the channel). I post photos as I'm building there so you don't have to wait for the videos to be edited!

    Your suspicions about the wheel being covered with canvas are correct! We have a few photographs evidencing this. Anyway, in regards to making the canvas take a look at Night Shift, he makes tanks and the like and some of hem have canvas covers and the like as stowage, I believe he uses putty or something, might be worth a look.
    If you just search "titanic docking bridge" or something similar, you should see most historical photos show the wheel being covered.

    So I don't know your name, I'm Tim....but your attention to detail is astonishing. I am currently in process the Hachette/Agora 1/200 Titanic build. It has issues, of course. YOU are on the 1/200 plastic kit that comes from Hasegawa. (I think). Anyhow? I just bought the 1/250 scale Amati kit....all wood.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim,
      Thanks for the comment! I’ve seen the hatchette titanic and did consider getting it, but I thought two 1:200 scale Titanics might be a bit much for my small flat!
      This model is the Trumpeter titanic kit, as you say it comes with its own set of issues. Some not so bad, some a bit worse. But in some ways a few issues are quite good as they add to the problem solving aspect of the model.
      The Amati should be a really good build, I have never made a wooden planked model before so interested to hear how it goes.
      I’m thinking of making a Greek Trireme style boat next and converting it to have working oars, so I might get the chance to build a wooden model myself before too long 😀
      Cheers,
      Robbie

    Hi Rob, yes the railings really frame things up nicely and make a good contrast with the deck colours etc. Interesting that they didn't put a wooden capping on the stern railing. Liked your monologue on the propeller notice signs. They look great don't they. I wondered if they were partly put on for grand effect too! As if to say Hey look I have three busy propellers on me! A bit like signage on a powerful car these days! I think the signal flag poles are right on the money. I found a tiny picture of the steering bridge and the signal flag poles were definitely a much darker colour than the railings, thus probably varnished wood as others have commented here. Good video on yet another fiddly faff job. Regards JH ⚓

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John,
      Yes you’re right it’s odd about the wooden capping. I wonder if it’s a combination of being a bit more exposed and possibly a bit less posh! As all the wooden capped ones are first or second class spaces.
      Yes I think that’s part of it on the prop signs. Interestingly I found a pic yesterday of Lusitania and her prop signage was canvas with black lettering, so it’s total anarchy!
      Thanks for confirming the flag staffs, easy to assume but they are always quite hard to see on photos. Hope all is well,
      Keep warm,
      Robbie

      Janky, love that term...although i did have to look it up!

    What's that oddball looking glue applicator you're using? Did you find that spraying kicker left any residue on the paint. Just curious. You sure make the railing installation look easy. I struggled with it.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the comment, the weird glue applicator is a sewing needle with a wooden handle. I cut the needle in middle of the eye to make a sort of Y shape. This can be dipped into the glue and the surface tension holds a very small quantity, which is great for small applications.
      Not my idea I hasten to add! It was suggested to be by a follower.
      I never got any residue with the kicker, however I did find sometimes it makes the glue dry too quick which gives it a sort of frosted effect. The solution to this is to paint over the affected area with clear matte varnish, another suggestion from a follower of the channel.
      Railings were tricky for sure, I found it helped to pre bend as much as you could, so they don’t have the tendency to spring back, and also I used blu tak to hold other bits in place as I went along.

    Just an observation, would all those control stations be covered, not just the wheel alone? Stunning work, as usual.

    • @TheModelBoatGuy
      @TheModelBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure, I have seen a photo a while ago or Olympic and it seemed only the wheel was covered, but maybe not. I think at some points during the day the docking bridge was manned. There was an officer on the docking bridge when Titanic hit the berg apparently

    • @TheModelBoatGuy

      As I say in the video it’s totally your choice what you do on your model. But have a read of the article I mention, it’s very well written and explains why photographic evidence isn’t necessarily a good way of defining the colour.
