Is Tesla Replacing Sacked Workers With Robots?
Tesla has made headlines around the world for laying off large numbers of its workforce. At the same time, it's well known that Tesla is actively working on the Tesla Bot - a robot that can reproduce many of the tasks that a human can do. That's got us to wondering: is Tesla quitely replacing its workers with robots?

    Hi Dave. I am a new EV owner (Smart #1 ... love it so far). My one and only public charging session two days ago wasn't a great experience. It was a GeniePoint fast charger installed in a Morrisons car park. I needed to download an App on the spot, and was eventually able to get it to work via the contactless display. The annoying bit was it said it was going to deduct £35 from my account and then re-imburse what I didn't use in 30 days!! What is that about? And is it typical? Why can't we just pay for what we use similar to buying petrol?

    In the UK we are seeing a massive reduction on PCH rentals as it's the best way to reduce stock levels without distressing the true up-front cost. It also kicks the Residual Value can down the road for a few years. With supply now exceeding demand AND the very real insurgence of the Chinese brands into the UK market this means no more spiralling RPI-busting RRP increases. Hence the move to the much vaunted Agency plan has been shelved by most OEM's (Mercedes excepted, for now) as we now enter a likely prolonged and sustained 'Push' market. The Covid days of no discounts, limited supply are long gone and will be dramatically hastened further when the effect of the ZEV legislation manifests itself later this year. BEV's will drop dramatically in cost and all ICE cars will suffer from OEM reduced supply accordingly.

    The Cybertruck isn't even available in your country, it doesn't pass safety standards. Musk fired the entire supercharger department while expecting to expand it to other car manufacturers. Remember as well, most of our electrical powergrid is older than I am (53), and in a lot of countries they still burn coal for power. All of that said, I'm not hating on EV's, I think it's a cool concept, I just don't think the world is properly set up to support them yet and the battery technology needs to come further before they're viable for real world usage.

      I don't live my life based on what other countries can't do and think about mine that can. I simply love f=driving round at 2p per mile. Yesterday I went to Harrogate, about 150 mile round trip and it cost me £3 in fuel. A plastic fuel container full of petrol for an ICE car costs twice that and wouldn't even get me there. EVs are the real world to me and have been for 4 years.

    Surely the business model for the use of robots like this is to have a 24/7 production line for manufacturing rather than having robots clean etc. Similarly stock takes would be fully automated so there wouldn’t need to be any robots here. Beyond this, any improvements in the process would be automatically implemented throughout the whole robot workforce thus increasing efficiencies further. If self driving does come to fruition then there wouldn’t be a need for humans to drive at all. All of this sounds great but we should be planning for the societal shift that would be required to find a place for humans to live better, and this should start right now.

    Until we get a universal wage replacing swathes of workers with robots will be difficult for governments to manage. All manner of social problems will surface. Having a job of some kind is important to many people for a variety of reasons not least mental health. I recall images from the Great Depression of working men hanging around street corners with broken spirits and full of despair. Can we allow free enterprise to throw millions on the scrap heap? Will politicians and organised Labour go along with this if it wrecks society as we have know it, even as unfair as it often is. Will it bring greater happiness or make things worse than we have experienced since Brexit and 14 years of Tory misrule.? The Jury is going to be out for many years.

    Robots are not more reliable, they are more consistent and over time they get faster and faster for the same consistency. Apply statistics to your product you then end up with better quality. Over time though, by displacing workers with robots you create a class of people who will never be able to work! Look at it like this: be a Janitor.. There is a robot for that Be miner.. there is a robot for that Be taxi driver.. there is FSD/Robots for that Be food delivery agent... There is a robot for that Be a cook.. yep a robot for that Be a doctor.. AI and robots take over Be a lawyer.. AI and databases will make your case and decide within seconds and you have no recourse. Finally be a ditch digger... sorry mate a robot does that quicker than you It would not be to far a stretch to have robot COPs like in the movies... so much scarier if that happens. .... you get the hint about where robots and AI can lead to. This could end up so much like the movie Elysium... a society far away from the lesser class (the movies shows them in space but a gated area would be equivalent today) where robots do everything for the rich while the rest are effectively slaves to them.

      @@davetakesiton While the dictionary term is correct I choose consistency over reliability since a robot would always do the same thing. This repetitive nature means they consistently get the same output from whatever it does. This output may or may not be 'good in quality' as that is normally a subjective assessment of the output. A robot will always create a bad quality product if the process always leads to it. I do agree they are reliable in terms of performance unlike humans whose performance can vary.

    Dave, time to brush up on your logic skills: 3:57 That Ford loses $120,000 per Mach E does not logically imply "the more they sell, the more they lose," as you claim at 3:57. You need to decompose the $180,000 cost into fixed and marginal. Your claim is only true if marginal cost exceeds marginal revenue. 4:41 600 stock days does not logically imply that some stock is from 2022. Numerical example: if 60,000 of a model were in stock and an average of 100 sold per day over the past 45 days (the customary interval used in the US auto sales analysis) that's 600 stock days. Those 60,000 units need not have been been produced in 2022, or even 2023 for that matter. Perhaps it's time to properly think through your videos rather than rushing them out every day. Quality over quantity, please.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe you could look at it the other way. If you produce 600 days of stock in a single year, as you suggest, say 2024, then by the time you sell them all, it will be 2026. You will eventually be seeing 2 year old models. Look forward or backward, 600 days of stock is seriously bad news. Research valid

    • @jemima_brown
      @jemima_brown ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@davetakesiton Just think for a minute what stock days actually means. If sales pick up compared with the previous 45 days, that stock can clear faster than the projected 600 days. It all depends on future demand and future production. Yes, in practice, 600 stock days is terrible. That doesn't mean your logic is correct.

    Hi Dave. Just to add a wrinkle to the mix, you mentioned that 100% of CCS2-equiped cars will be able to connect to V4 Tesla Superchargers, but I don't think that this is universal. The reason for this is not Tesla's fault. For example - the original 53.5KWh MG5 EV Standard Range cannot charge at specifically opened Tesla V3 chargers, while the later Long Range models (including the latest face-lift models) can reportedly onlyl do so once they have been given a cost-free firmware update in order to be compatible with Tesla's charging protocols. The only way to make the MG5 standard range models compatible with the Tesla charger protocols would be to upgrade the built-in charge controller, which according to some MG5-related forum posts I have read would be at a cost of around £800 to owners. I have not been able to track down a designated V4 charter to test my MG5 SR, so what you said might still hold true for the V4's specifically. So - unfortunately it's not all plain sailing for MG5 (and possibly MG ZS EV) owners, but at least it seems that MG4 owners are well supported. It would be interesting to know whether other EV manufacturers have similar issues with charging at Tesla chargers.Thanks for all your hard work, I enjoy every video. Regards, Jan Henkins.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I agree Jan, but the fault does not lie with the charger network which is capable of charging all CCS2 cars. If the EV manufacturer does not make it possible, your argument is with them, not the charger. Maybe threaten them that they are breaking the law by you not being able to drive up to any CCS2 charger and charge your EV. Any software update should be totally free.

    • @janhenkins

      @@davetakesiton Hi Dave. I don't think I dissed Tesla in my comment, my apologies if that is what you thought I did. I agree that it is the manufacturer that is actually being obstructive in this case.The software update for the newer MG5's are indeed free, but in the case of the original MG5 (specifically the 53KWh model) the official stance is that we have to replace the physical charge controller unit at the tune of £800. I'll have to dig deeper into this issue, and maybe get the MG Owner's Club with me on the case.

    It's because people who bought EV's 6 years ago don't need a new car thanks to software updates and they cost so little to run. Fossil cars aren't selling because people are keeping them until EV's are available for an affordable price.
