Keep at it Dave. There's so much misinformation put out regarding EV's, charging and basically anything that is perceived as a threat to everything ICE! I made the change to electric motoring earlier in the year. I've never looked back since. Great channel.
Great advice Dave and I hope you enjoyed the Everything Electric North show.
Watch Macmasters latest TH-cam on his road trip through France. He actually took Intelligent pills before he set off. He had a good experience and did not have any hassle. I have said it before France has a charging infrastructure that makes the UK look like a third world country. The roads are much better as well.
Thanks Dave for clarifying the situation for non-Tesla drivers and using the Tesla charging network. Having downloaded the app, I can't see a filter to find the chargers that are open to all EVs. Website you can, but not on the app....unless I'm missing something. Perhaps the fact that I've registered with Tesla without a Tesla car, it has already factored this in. That would be really cool if it did do that!
Hi Dave nice to bump into you at everything electric north today while the Wife was checking out the Ora 03 regards Paul
Hi Paul, coincidence? My wife was also checking out the Ora, chequebook required soon I suspect. Nice to meet you
I spotted you at Harrogate today. Hope you had a good day, we did.
Best Regards.
Sorry I missed you John, great day
Hi Dave. Nice to meet you and your good lady at Everything Electric today. Sorry to interrupt your lunch but the ladies did seem to fined something to chat about ! Keep up the great work. Regards Tony.
Good job we dragged them apart, Tony. noice to meet you
After much dicking around in an inadequate App I finally found out how to find the "open" tesla superchargers via the website, not the app.
Looking at the open sites and considering my pending trip to Orkney from the UK midlands, I have identified 3 open Tesla charging sites allowing me to charge at about half the cost of non-Tesla charging costs on the motorways and major roads.
It occurs to me that opening up the network is a precursor to selling the network and finally ditching their own network as it is no longer necessary as ev take up and charger network installations are now maturing nicely.
Cheers Dave
Dave new or potential EV drivers would also like to see how the chargers actually take payment, when to plug in and how to stop and start a charge. Also over stay charges needs to be explained to them as lets say you plugged into a ultra rapid in your new EV went for a bun and tea and the car finished before you did ! What happens then I guess you get a fine for occupying the bay while fully charged. In this case a slower charger would be better ? But all these little things that are different to pay at pump get a message to start fuelling, finish replace and drive off can be a little different at EV chargers I guess causing a little fear and uncertainty.
Thanks Michael, I am just embarking on filming a series of videos "Dummy's guide to everything" explaining all the things we old hands take for granted.
i have the Powerwall app and it has add a non Tesla but when it comes to billing it wont let me as it keeps asking for a Zip code i cant see how when its working in the UK
Hi Dave. I am a new EV owner (Smart #1 ... love it so far). My one and only public charging session two days ago wasn't a great experience. It was a GeniePoint fast charger installed in a Morrisons car park. I needed to download an App on the spot, and was eventually able to get it to work via the contactless display. The annoying bit was it said it was going to deduct £35 from my account and then re-imburse what I didn't use in 30 days!! What is that about? And is it typical? Why can't we just pay for what we use similar to buying petrol?
Sorry Andrew but you get the same with petrol if you use the pay at the pump feature. There, the fee can be up to £99. Gridserve is one that charges only £1 or most apps allow you to enter a payment method and then you shouldn't pay a fee at all.
Hi Dave. Just to add a wrinkle to the mix, you mentioned that 100% of CCS2-equiped cars will be able to connect to V4 Tesla Superchargers, but I don't think that this is universal. The reason for this is not Tesla's fault. For example - the original 53.5KWh MG5 EV Standard Range cannot charge at specifically opened Tesla V3 chargers, while the later Long Range models (including the latest face-lift models) can reportedly onlyl do so once they have been given a cost-free firmware update in order to be compatible with Tesla's charging protocols. The only way to make the MG5 standard range models compatible with the Tesla charger protocols would be to upgrade the built-in charge controller, which according to some MG5-related forum posts I have read would be at a cost of around £800 to owners. I have not been able to track down a designated V4 charter to test my MG5 SR, so what you said might still hold true for the V4's specifically. So - unfortunately it's not all plain sailing for MG5 (and possibly MG ZS EV) owners, but at least it seems that MG4 owners are well supported. It would be interesting to know whether other EV manufacturers have similar issues with charging at Tesla chargers. Thanks for all your hard work, I enjoy every video. Regards, Jan Henkins.
I agree Jan, but the fault does not lie with the charger network which is capable of charging all CCS2 cars. If the EV manufacturer does not make it possible, your argument is with them, not the charger. Maybe threaten them that they are breaking the law by you not being able to drive up to any CCS2 charger and charge your EV. Any software update should be totally free.
@@davetakesiton Hi Dave. I don't think I dissed Tesla in my comment, my apologies if that is what you thought I did. I agree that it is the manufacturer that is actually being obstructive in this case. The software update for the newer MG5's are indeed free, but in the case of the original MG5 (specifically the 53KWh model) the official stance is that we have to replace the physical charge controller unit at the tune of £800. I'll have to dig deeper into this issue, and maybe get the MG Owner's Club with me on the case.
Hello mate
One thing I can’t find an answer for (and Tesla don’t seem to let me submit a question) is: if I take out a Tesla membership as a non-Tesla driver can I then use any supercharger or is it only those open to all?
Only those open to all so far but subject to change as more are coming on stream
If I get a tesla membership for a non tesla, does it still charge a pre authorisation fee each time.
Not to my knowledge, I haven't had anything like that
What does it say about owners of EVs if they need lessons on how to change them.
When I was 17 I bought a 1936 Ford V8 & filled it up the first day without a lesson on how to do it.
Agreed, but you need lessons in oil changes and filters and drive belts and how to operate a clutch and change gears and drive to the garage every time you need fuel. Me? I don’t bother with any of that
I taught myself all those things when I was young & could rebuild engines ( for my competion cars)
You buy fuel when you are out, i never let the tank get below 25%, dont ever remember just going out to get fuel.
I have nothing against EV just the mandates, I just don't want one, my comments are more tongue in cheek.
I regularly come across CCS2 chargers that have no contactless option and an APP and or RFID card {you ordered two weeks before arriving at the charger ;-( } is required.
New chargers must have a contactless option BUT I see no trend to retrofit.

Hi Dave.
Great presentation.
Would you consider covering the Octopus Electroverse card/App.
How do you find chargers, how much these cost.
Thank you.
Mind reader it’s high on my list, John
