  • People ask me all the time, 'what can we do to challenge the EV haters?' And it's great that people want to, as there is so much misinformation - deliberate or otherwise - out there. But the reality is far more complicated. So to find out whether we CAN take on EV hater, or even whether we should, stick around as Dave Takes It On.

I am regularly asked about my Tesla by ICE drivers and you can see many are coming around, two of my neighbours have recently purchased EV’s despite both being what was called “petrol heads”. I was having a meal out the other day and the restaurant owner asked me about the Tesla 1st question as always range my response how far do you drive every week? He replied 250-300 miles, i replied same as me about £5 a week to run, what about long journeys? How many children or elderly people do you carry how often do you stop? Him “Oh about 2hrs max” well same as me and in the time i have been to toilet got a drink or whatever reason i had to stop there is more than enough charge to get me to my destination or next stop. You could hear the gears clicking and he said you are the 3rd EV driver who has given me the same answers it is really making me think about changing to EV. He currently runs a sporty 5 series so it just goes to show that slowly the effects of actual experience will convince people to consider if an EV is right for them.

There is a psychological component to this. People are more risk averse, than they are willing to make an effort. They will put more energy into avoiding a loss than to make a gain. So the mind naturally puts more importance on the negative statements about EVs, than the positive. " Oh, it does 300 miles on a charge - so what, it will burst into flames." "It's a much better driving experience - so what, you can't charge it anywhere." "The maintenance costs are much lower - so what, the battery only lasts 5 years, and costs £15,000 to replace..."
The Auto (ICE) Industry, and Big Oil know this, so with a few million spent (pocket change to them) on spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt about EVs, they can influence a large part of society to have negative views of EVs...

I went to a client last month (a University) and there were no parking spaces for my petrol car. It took 45 mins in a queue to get Parked. There were. 8 free EV chargers. I could have charged right away, went to the client and came back to a fully charged car. There were loads of EV charging places all over the Campus.

    • @AndrewTSq

The probem is that many parking spaces have a fee if your car is fully charged, and you still stay on the spot... Tesla here charges you half a dollar per minute (!).. So this only works if your battery can charge for your stay. Otherwise you will have your anxiety anyway.

The problem with relying on subliminal advertising is that people are seeing hard facts like Hertz in the USA dumping 30,000 Teslas because people won't hire them, repairs are more expensive etc. This has far more cut through the people seeing an EV charger.

    • @barnseyfrommossley
      @barnseyfrommossley หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Dave has addressed this issue on a previous video. Hire companies change their fleets regularly, and it's time for Hertz to change their Tesla fleet. The problem lies with their purchase strategy, they bought 30,000 at once instead of 5,000 every year for 6 years. It's just a management f***up, nothing more.

    • @ianseward2617
      @ianseward2617 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@barnseyfrommossley Inc reported
Now, however, Hertz is selling off many of those vehicles because it's no longer worth it. Instead, it plans to replace them with gas-powered vehicles.
The fact that Hertz says it will take a $245 million (based on 20,000 cars) hit to its balance sheet as a result of selling off the vehicles tells you that the cost of keeping those vehicles was greater than that. Part of that cost, according to Hertz, comes from the fact that Teslas, in particular, are more expensive to repair, and parts can be harder to come by than your standard fleet car. Hertz attributed the push to reduce the number of EVs in its fleet to an effort to lower what it calls "damage expense."
Hertz are replacing EV's with gas powered, that's a strong message and have now announced another 10,000 Tesla dump to put the total at 30,000.

I’m in Michigan, gas is now about $3.43 to $3.86 per gallon. Running the math my Model 3 is costing me the equivalent of less than $1 per gallon to drive when charging at home and around $2-$2.50 to SuperCharge. So there’s no way to spend more charging a Model 3 vs gassing up an UVE vehicle. A Chevy Bolt gets very similar efficiency compared to a Model 3 so the price is very similar per mile. A used Bolt with a GM-replaced battery is about $11k, not bad at all for a used car. The knock on them is slow DC fast charging but for a commuter car you charge at home it’s IDEAL.
The point is, it’s way cheaper to drive an EV. Once people realize that they can’t afford not to switch, they will start buying EVs. It’s not a matter of if but when IMHO. And it’ll be surprisingly soon at this rate.

Regarding the Dacia Spring, it has a quoted range of 137miles. This figure is found as a result of testing the vehicle in the following way.
Class 3 WLTP test 'continuous, no stops'
    589 seconds at average 15.7mph, peak 35mph
    433 seconds at avg 27.6mph, peak 48mph
    455 seconds at avg 37.7mph, peak 60mph
323 seconds at avg 58.4 mph, peak 81mph
So if, as I do, live 2 miles form the motorway and I have to drive to somewhere 110 miles away, on the motorway, at speeds of real world 70-80 mph , can this car get me there on just one charge ? Thats what I want to know
The distance is like driving from Sheffield to Newcastle, London to Bournmouth, and 10 miles less than Edinburgh to Aberdeen
The WLTP range figures are obviously inapplicable to motorway driving (as admitted by manufacturers), but is there a way to figure out how far it can go on the motorway ? Because then I can know if the battery is adequate enough to get me there, 110 miles away
In general, a small car will manage to return between 3.5 - 4.5 miles/kWh, if driven at real motorway speeds.
A mid to large sized car only returns 2.5 to 4 miles per kWh, driven at real world motorway speeds
All we need to know now is how big, electrically speaking, is the Dacia Spring battery ? 26.8kWh
So lets say it's raining and dull, and I'm only getting 3.5 miles per kWh (because I've got the heating on, lights on, lane assist on, etc etc) then 3.5 x 26.8 = 93 miles, if, you go to the absolute extremes of the battery's capacity, which you should never do, so I guess you will start getting low range warnings after 80 miles (just over an hour on the motorway)
This explains why Dacia are calling it a 'City car'. They literally do mean a city car.
Not like the old days when Vauxhall Nova city cars had 450 miles of range, The Ford Ka was really frugal too, the one we had kept running well after the spark plug electrode had burned down into the ceramic. Literally
I just wish EV makers could be more clear about a highway range figure, right now it's all down to guesswork for a lot of people, who had no need to understand electrical units of measurement, until EVs came along.
£15k for a car which has to stop after 80 miles on the motorway, and which takes 45minutes to charge between 20% and 80%. IE after 45 minutes you can drive another 48 miles further.
In terms of time, for every 38 minutes of driving you will need to stop for 45 minutes. I wouldn't dream of taking that on the motorway !
It's one for the kids, school run mum's filled with anxiety about a climate crisis which is oozing from the pores of their virtue signalling kids . She hopes they'll stop nagging her if she gets the EV.....

I find this all to be very interesting. Lovers VS Haters. Only these two extremes and nothing but the extremes ! But in the middle there has to be some common sense ?
Regarding grid capacity, I want to put this argument straight on track, by using mathematics. In the UK we have a typical demand of somewhere between 20GW to 60GW. Demand is season dependent. 20GW relates to a quiet weekend daytime in summer. 60GW relates to a cold dull day in winter
We have a generating capacity of about 60/70GW of 'conventional' power available, and another potential 40/50GW of 'renewables'.
This means that when all conditions are at their best, we have 120GW of generation capacity, which includes full wind and full solar, for use by grid customers. Quite a rare day, that
How many cars can the grid charge at once ?
It's quite easy to work it out.
First things first, what are the most extreme cases we could look at today, using real world figures, to get an answer to how many cars can the grid charge. ?
    a) We could find ourselves with 90GW of supply available, on a day with a 60GW demand. leaving 30GW available for EV charging. This could be the worst case scenario
    b) Or we could have 120GW of generation capacity available (Conventional+ renewables) on a day with just 20GW of demand. This gives 100GW available for charging
How much power do EVs use to charge ? Anything from 3kW to 275kW.
Lets say for argument's sake the average is 50kW
Using a) above, the number of cars which can be charged at once is 30GW divided by 50kW. 600,000 cars maximum
Using b) above, the number of cars which can be charged at once is 100GW divided by 50kW. 2,000,000 cars maximum.
In the worst case, the grid can currently support charging for 600,000 EVs at once.
Currently, the UK has about 29 million cars.
    See the problem ?

The United States Secretary of Energy made a road trip of about 700 miles last summer, and it was fraught with charging problems. One of them involved the police being called because they had sent an advance ICE car ahead to block a charging stall so the secretary wouldn't have to wait. In the other car was a woman with her kids in the car, and it was a hot summer day, and she wanted to get home. I don't hate electric cars, but to call other people liars because they are pointing out the obvious problems with them is a bit preachy.
I am a retired airline pilot. I live 115 miles away from the airport, and I made the trip once a week. I seriously looked into getting a Tesla years ago, I think the Model S was the only choice at the time. I had to be able to drive the 115 miles, at 75 mph, park in a lot without a charger for four days, have enough power left to get to a charging station on my way home, and be able to do this when it is -10c and windy. The Model S couldn't do it. Even today that's a pretty tough challenge.
But now we find ourselves, at least in the west, with governments working on banning the cars that work for the most people because paying people to buy the alternative cars didn't work. At the same time, they are banning the electrical power generation plants that work reliably 24/7, for alternative energy sources that work about 30% of the time. What could possibly go wrong?

Regarding the 'feature set selloff', where features can be 'bought' later via software. While it is true that software development is expensive, but also highly profitable, it's still easy to see that this practice is undeniable profiteering by the manufacturers.Manufacturers used to be proud about how many features they 'gave' you, and the cost was then amortized across every car they made. That's what buying into that brand or model was all about in the first place.
But all of that goodwill is gone. The features are already fitted to all models, it's just the free cost of an over the air update, with a licence to let you use the feature which has always existed anyway since the car left the factory.
What happens then if nobody buys into the new features. The manufacturer spends a lot of money developing something and nobody ever buys it, which begs the question, what do they do about that loss ? Obviously it is still the customer who has to pay, either way, so why not leave those features switched on from the factory ? It doesn't say much about any company who chooses to take that path.

Take a look at the TH-cam videos showing various EV's towing trailers and caravans. One TH-camr - Andrew Ditton - towed a caravan from his home in the Outer Hebrides to Germany, videoing the trip as it went. He towed using his Hyundai Ioniq 5.......

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Most EV's have a towing limit in the 1600kg region, some more, some less. Assuming your question is genuine and not just baiting, that's probably the least of the inconvenience.
Where towing gets tedious is range dropping by up to half but then also that you'd need to park the caravan and unhitch each time.
For that reason alone, other than just to prove a point "it can be done", a good turbo diesel tow car probably still makes more sense.

I gave a lift to a couple of people from my local village the other day and it was interesting that all of the anti EV information was being asked about. I told them how oil companies and countries don't want to lose their income and spread false information. They asked about range, batteries needing to be changed and fires. Well 272 miles range, battery with 8 year warranty and cars with over 400,000 miles still around 90%. Then that LFP batteries are safe and don't catch fire. By the end of their journey both were interested in EV's.
I have like you, initially been annoyed, but realise that we are unable to stop the liars in the news or on you tube. Some like the news readers are often ignorant and refer to their knowledge from facebook posts. others knowingly give fake information. A lot of this will be proved wrong as more and more EV's are sold and owned. 3 years ago, I barely saw another EV, the other day 3 of us in a row and passed by a lot more travelling the opposite direction. As less ICE cars exist and need fuelling, petrol stations will convert to EV charging and coffee shops.
Also the more older EV's seen on the road show batteries last and maintenance bills will be far lower to keep them running. This information will spread and will work it's way into the lives of many of the anti EV brigade via friends or even family.
Finally as electricity prices drop due to the increase of renewables and battery storage, the price of oil will continue to rise as it is a finite resource. When their friend is getting 200 miles for £2.00 so 600 miles for £6.00, and petrol will be £150 for the same range, how long will they want to stay running an ICE car.
    A great video again Dave.

At last the week my Ioniq 5 is due to arrive is here. Like a sensible person I spent months researching what it could be like running an EV. There’s an old saying haters will always hate, that goes for every part of life, not just EV’s. What I don’t understand is what is it about an EV that gets people so riled up. It’s a car, like every other car, but doesn’t produce fumes and gas that is killing people and our planet. My grandchildren deserve a future. So let’s hope my small contribution will help them have that future.

On the other hand Tesla may not see companies like Fords as a threat. How much will EV credit be sold for ? The crashing the grid argument is only ever said by ignorant people who do not know any better.
If you switched on all the rings and oven on your electric cooker , put your electric fire on three bars, switched on your electric shower at its hottest and had every telly and appliance switched on, and if every house fed from your local electrical substation did the same at the same time, the fuse in the substation would blow ,putting all the electricity off..
Of course this does not happen because we dont all switch on all our appliances at the same time ,its called electrical discrimination. When a new housing estate is built each house has a 100amp fuse , but each house is assumed to be using only 1 or 2 kW any one time and thats the way the electrical network has been built for over 70 years and it works just fine.

However in the not to distant future as realisation sets in they will loose following and revenue. I know this as I used to lap up the lies then I sat down to prove someone wrong. EV's don't make for profit with a small to medium size second hand car dealerships. It's all about turnover. Most second hand car dealers are struggling for stock. These are small to medium size ICE cars, they are the golden hen to them, with an average of 20 days turnover. You talk about a Corsa E, pointless to the second hand market. The dealers can't afford to have EV's sitting on their forecourts. You go to the major car auction houses, like I have, you will see where the car market actually is.
