Beau, if this was a normal election I would say that what you tell activists is right.. But it’s not normal. You make a passing reference to the upcoming election. You CANNOT underestimate the damage that another Trump presidency will cause world wide, including to the Palestinian people. If a two state solution deal were ready tomorrow it would make no difference if Trump becomes president again. Trump has already signaled his belief that Netanyahu should completely destroy once and for all the Palestinian people, at least in Gaza. Should Trump win it wouldn’t matter what agreements had been made, what treaties signed. Netanyahu would simply being this war again and Trump will give Netanyahu anything and everything he wants. So what you are referring to as “calling Biden names” has the potential to to finally destroy all of the hopes of the Palestinian people, as well as destroying our democracy and any rights our young activists enjoy now. If this were Biden vs Bush or Biden vs Mike Pence, or even (God forbid) Biden vs Ted Cruz I could see your point. I actually don’t agree that Biden’s denial of those weapons in light of Isreal’s action in Rafah is due to student pressure. I honestly believe that it is due to what he has seen BeBe do and to what BeBe has said in discussions. But neither you nor I will ever know that for sure. What is clear is that the student “name calling” has weakened Biden in this election campaign at a time when he needs an obvious landslide in order to prevent Trump’s next coup attempt.

He is on the right trajectory but in my estimation only because he has been draged into that direction. Also if Egypt and Jordan had not just said 'no' but 'HELL NO' to the plan to drive people into the Sinai things would have been very different most likely the cleanzing thing would be in full swing.

Calling people weak isn't a good foreign policy or take. You started with there are 3 powers... 111 million people are weaker to you than 9.558 million or so. That's just Egypt. We didn't include Jordan or Lebanon Syria or Libya or Yemen or Iraq. Worse you didn't acknowledge religion here and when you put religion on the scale of the extremist they know the population difference here. I won't suggest to you military weapons and or tactics potentially make others weaker but and I hope you understand this the British military got their ass kicked? Insulting people and or regions potentially makes them rise up against the so called power. It's exactly why The Houthis are at war with your so called (power)? Palestinians have been throwing rocks at tanks for nearly 40 years now? I' m not suggesting it's smart to round up a bunch of idiots and think you will win with a bunch of idiots. I am suggesting that people have feelings and calling them weak is stirring up a nest of weaklings who will use a massive number of weaklings to show you strength whether they win or not it won't matter. You've created that insult and when you include religion into this you're insulting their GOD as weak as well. Bad foreign policy take. I doubt you will rehear what you said and how quickly you can turn people off to any cause you may or may not have. I doubt anybody who is an Egyptian or a Libyan or a Syrian or a Jordanian is like my military is weak what a bunch of weaklings. It's also why Russia is learning that they might not be the best military inside of Ukraine? But Ukraine is still in need of help?

president biden is doing what's right to keep us out of a nuclear war. Netanyahu is now wrong, we were all for this, after the ambush and the children's body's on sticks. Yasser Arafat bombed and extorted his way into a piece of Israel land. what did the Palestinians do? in 2007 they elected crooks and gangsters who took them over with one free election that what they did. now they are paying for that. America should take a hard look at that before they elect a spoiled little boy who doesnt have any connection to truth justice and the American way. he showed how little could be accomplished as a president. now he is in court and the country shows us how corrupt it is. lock trump up.

What's NOT being openly discussed is the MOTIVATION of the doer/provider of the charity/aid. As in WHY they're doing whatever it is they're doing. That's what's NOT being openly discussed. Let's face it - doing good incurs a cost of some kind. The lawn guys on You Tube have costs - fuel for equipment & maintenance of same, dump fees for waste. Those costs have to be met somehow & You Tube advertising revenue provides a way to meet those costs. Some peeps - don't wanna storm the barricades, others do. Some peeps have real issues with doing the right thing for the wrong reasons - who cares provided they're doing the right thing.

I disagree in one particular place--that pro-Palestine activists keeping Biden from being reelected isn't a concern. We have precedent with the Johnson administration, who couldn't run for reelection despite the great success of his Great Society, due to Vietnam.

As someone in university, but actually majoring in political science, I can add a bit more to Beau's points. I hope it serves as insightful background for anyone who picked a merrier topic to study... (warning: this comment will be long) 2:00 The US will "never" leave Israel because: 1. There's a lot of Jewish voters in the US, so anyone running for office would stand to lose a lot of votes by abandoning them. 2. The balance of power between three nations (this could, hypothetically, shift if a major pro-US movement turned _both_ Saudi Arabia _and_ Iran into _bigger_ supporters of the US than Israel - but that's a scenario that's _so_ farfetched that's it's not realistic. However, note that it's about the balance itself, and not about the countries themselves but about the roles they play in maintaining stability) 3. The Middle East is still quite important for geopolitics (due to oil, the Suez canal in combination with trade between Europe and Asia, and terrorism). 3:18 Everything is complicated because there are a lot of players involved, and they all get a say. So if you do X, you don't change anything - you only change the circumstances in which everyone else makes their own decision! And they kinda tend to adjust whatever they were doing before to undermine what you tried to change. That's why Beau always talks about interests. Only by making their interests align with yours, can you get them to not-undermine you whenever you try to change something. If you fail to align their interests with yours, whatever action you devise will get countered. This is why Beau said that a simple solution usually only has knock on effects that make the problem worse (4:00). For instance, UK policy has always been to never let a single hegemon rule continental Europe. So when Germany annexed Austria before WW2, they let that slide. But they didn't let the subsequent invasion of Poland slide too... 4:30 Spreading democracy is only a veneer to make things seem palatable. The natural world is cruel, where almost every creature dies by being eating by something bigger. Human Civilization has tried to fight this "Darwinistic Gravity" at times - but you cannot turn gravity off. At its core, foreign policy lacks a final arbiter. At home, if you steal something from your neighbors, there's entire police departments and law firms that can come after you. And they have more power than you do to fight back. So the punishment can outweigh the reward, and most people behave (despite sometimes getting jealous or shortsighted, etc). In international affairs, the only way to guard your stuff is by having a big enough stick. So unless there is one superpower who rules over everyone (like a policeman), you get infighting. Only it's not about siblings and toys, but about life and death... This is why it can be so brutal and immoral, and why power is the only thing that truly matters. Because without power to stop your neighbors from going caveman on your skull, no amount of morality has any influence/meaning... 6:30 The UN is something that was designed at a very specific moment in time, with specific dominant players, for a specific purpose. It serves that purpose for those players at that time. Thank god we've since made progress. But that also means that the UN has gotten outdated. Also, and perhaps more importantly, those dominant players had to sacrifice some of their power, at the time. So the only way you could get the Allies after WW2 _and_ the Soviet Union to sign off on _the same_ rules, was by minimizing how much power they had to sacrifice. This is why the five "winners" of WW2 have a permanent veto - they never would've signed their dominance away willingly, at the time. But those vetoes are also what enabled them to get away with horrific things, like the unjustfiable invasions of Iraq and Ukraine. So, really, the UN was a way to guarantee and codify the dominant nations post-WW2 to maintain their dominance. That's why they agreed in the first place, and it's why the UN is weak/flawed. 7:40 This is the same as the many actors answer. If you change X, but not the incentives of the other players, they'll just do something to undo your change. If you had total control anyways, you could dictate what happened. But the fact that some problems persist shows that no one has complete power. So there's always someone who can make a counter move. And that's why there is no "just do X" easy solution. So people roll their eyes because, in your terms, it's like I said "if you're homeless, just buy a house." The way you'd react to me saying that, that's the way we react to you saying a "just do X" solution. If it were that simple, it would've been solved long ago... It shows to people who dedicated their entire careers to understanding these issues, that they're in effect discussing their marriage problems with a toddler - it feels like a waste of time. (note: it isn't, since there's real value in bringing others up to speed on our specialty - but I could totally empathize with people who are trying to save actual lives being exasperated by someone's not-thought-through not-solution) 9:25 A thing to know here, is that there were two world wars (and countless "small" or civil wars about ethnicities living outside of the geographical bounds of their nations. And the strife that it caused. One time, this was solved by the Red Army forcibly deporting millions of people to the new borders after WW2. And, as you can imagine, it did not go smoothly... The bloodshed that was caused by those wars and the eventual (en)forced relocation of so many people absolutely _dwarfs_ what we're seeing in Gaza. Also, imagine you were ruling any Arab country. And now imagine that, suddenly, millions of people have to move into your country. Even if you had the busses and planes to move them, which you don't... All of them are uneducated, and deeply deeply traumatized by generations upon generations of war, conflict, hatred, being ignored/having no real future, and the bad upbringing that inevitably results from all of that. You now have to house all of them. You have to find jobs for them. They need food. They need education. And they probably all need therapy that not even Western nations would be capable of providing - let alone on the scale you need it, and you certainly also lack the quality of Western therapists. Imagine what millions of those people would do to your economy. How their trauma would increase crime rates and domestic violence. How much your own population would protest so many new workers looking for jobs, thereby driving down wages for those who already lived in your country. How many shortages for food and housing it would cause. What all of that would do to inflation. _If_ your country/economy would even survive such a massive shock to the system, you'd still be lucky if the revolution ended you without prolonged suffering.... This is why, even if for a moment we presume that Arab nations _truly_ care about Palestinians (and not just to curry favor with their own populations), _no one_ who is smart enough to have gained any power in any Arab nation, would be foolish enough to invite them in... Note that I'm not saying it's right or moral - but it _is_ rational. 12:20 People do not like being governed by a puppet regime. And there is not enough overlap between what the Palestinians want and what Israel would allow/want. So no government that the Palestinians _truly_ support has been acceptable to Netanyahu et al. So whoever _was_ tolerated/in power, does not have public support. And whoever _does_ have public support, would be targeted by Mossad when trying to actually govern. This is another case where international affairs are brutal, and it creates a stalemate... 14:15 It would take total nuclear annihilation of Israel (which would give the Palestinians their land back, but even then it would be like a sick evil-genie intentional-minterpretation trick version). Or a bioweapon that magically erases only Jewish people. (and note that I'm not talking about genetics here, but about religion - so it's impossible because there is no gene to target, and biology cannot target beliefs). Also, these options are one of those things where "the cure is worse than the disease." (not that either ethnicity is a "disease" btw!) The only _actually_ workable solution would be peace, _true_ peace. But good luck convincing _millions_ of people, many of whom have lost family members, to _all_ bury their hatchets - because all it takes is _one_ traumatized person choosing violence to cause new victims/descendants, who can then decide to take vengeance once again - and so the cycle goes on and on and on... 15:20 They overlook the people dying right now because they _have_ to. If you didn't, you'd go insane. The loss is simply too overwhelming for any single human mind to truly take in. And you cannot save lives if you're stuck at home with a burnout... So you _must_ numb yourself emotionally in order to stay productive. I'm absolutely sure that everyone who ever cared enough about the world to go work at the US State Department would _love_ to flip a switch that magically stopped the bloodshed. If they didn't care, they would have picked a less-horrible career! But that magic button does not exist. So they're "making the omelet" that they _can,_ as much as they loathe not being able to do more with less. So please be mindful of your own soul, and keep in mind that these people are dedicated and will do what they can - but they're not gods who can just snap their fingers and change reality... I hope this sheds some light on things, that Beau didn't have time for (or that just didn't pop into his head while reading the questions, for I certainly had a lot more time to think about my comment)

This is the most powerful argument I've heard to convince those planning to stay home in Nov because they don't like Biden's actions re Gaza. If you're one of those planning to stay home in Nov - please don't. Please get out and fulfill the civic obligations imposed on them - to vote for the government you want. If you're not a Trumpist, please tell me exactly what it is you expect Biden to do. That you feel would make a difference to Netanyahu's decisions. Because I really can't think of anything - short of leaving an ally out to dry. Netanyahu was told NOT to launch a ground offensive, learn from our mistakes. What did Netanyahu do? Yup - launched a ground offensive. With predictable results. Netanyahu was told NOT to go into Rafa because well, humanitarian disaster which makes Israel look bad on the world stage. Netanyahu's response? OK - let's evacuate the area & make plans to deal with the refugees we know we're gonna cause by going into Rafa, then we go into Rafa. Stop holding Biden accountable for the actions of others, like Netanyahu.

Kudos to the person asking the questions, challenging yourself and your preconceptions (even those that go against what feels right to you) is the hallmark of a true academic.

I think the answer to 'why won't their neighbours take in Palestinians' needs more historical context. When Jordan and Egypt previously took in 100s of thousands of Palestinians, they were not allowed back into Palestine and became permanent immigrants in countries with economic and regime issues of their own. I don't think it's paranoia for observors to think Israel plans to do this again.

If the commenter is really interested, I suggest looking into MUN, Model United Nations. It gives a really interesting look into what actually goes on with foreign policy, in the UN, the HUGE difference in tiny changes to 'language', and why it's so damn hard to get things done. And then, when you realize that a weekend or week of MUN can solve most of the world's problems and complications based on logic and publicly available information, you will finally understand that things are a million times MORE complicated, because there's a lot of NOT public information, and secret agreements and considerations in ADDITION to everything else going on. And we have NO. IDEA. what any of it truly is, we can only guess, based on what actually happens, vs. what would make sense based on publicly available information. Foreign policy is one of the most complicated and nebulous things in the world...
