      Dear Ms. Beau, forgive my odd and aged imagination. For some reason, hearing the well deserved compliments of your much faceted life, I pictured a lovely woman in a cinched shirtwaist, a strand of Pearl's and high heeled rubber boots, wielding her broad shovel while mucking out the stalls. Donna Reed has nothing on you. Although, she too was gifted the moon by Jimmie Stewart.

      *_No._*_ they aren't._
      After Icarus flew too close to the sun & plummeted into the sea, Daedalus flew on. After landing safely, but exhausted physically & emotionally at the loss of his beloved son, he found a ram with golden fleece tangled in brush. He freed the ram & sacrificed it to Zeus in thanks for his safe escape from his prison. He took the ram's coat and put it into the branches of a tree on the edge of the cliff where he'd landed. Then he began his journey as a free man.
      This _really_ impressed Zeus -- that rather than be bitter at the loss of his son, Daedalus was _grateful_ to be free. So grateful he left the _entire_ fleece, taking none of the gold for himself! Zeus decided _this_ sacrifice needed special acknowledgment. He created a dragon to guard the fleece so no one could plunder it and defile Daedalus's gift to him. He gave the dragon a thousand eyes so it was _always_ had at least some open and aware: No one could sneak past Drakon Kholkikos to steal from the fleece. For years and years, he lived under the tree, faithfully guarding the fleece.
      Then Jason showed up, and was tasked to get the fleece. Medea, the sorceress, gave Jason a potent sleeping draught that would cause Drakon Kholkikos to fall _completely_ asleep. When all the dragon's eyes closed, Jason snuck in and stole the fleece.
      When Drakon Kholkikos awoke and found the fleece missing, it was so distressed at _failing in his _*_one_*_ duty -- its _*_only_*_ purpose,_ it hurled itself off the cliff to die crushed on the rocks below.
      Zeus saw this and was so moved by Drakon Kholkikos's dedication and grief, he gathered up the dragon's broken body. First, he took the bones and put them into the sky to shine forever as the constellation "Draco". Then he made a bird with a long flowing tail where he placed the dragon's eyes. He gave it an ugly song, a poor tasting meat, a poor flyer. He made it so the only expectation anyone would have of it was that it would be beautiful so that it could _never_ fail its task again.
      _And _*_that_*_ is how peacocks -- & peafowl -- came to be._
      Didn't realize til telling this on _this_ day, but now i think about it, it _really_ is quite a love story.

    To the parents of the 4-year old having trouble sleeping - I was that kid who wouldn't sleep through the night. My mom never fails to mention how insanely rough that was on her. It was in my late teens that I finally found the ONLY thing that puts me to sleep: audiobooks! As an adult, I need "difficult" books, to make sure they keep my mind wired and really invested, but with a little one that's not really an issue :) Try going to your local library together with the tiny insomniac in question, and pick some cool stories together! If the sleeping part fails, you'll still have planted the seeds for a love of literature and that's never a bad idea!

    • @heidim7732
      @heidim7732 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I slept through the night just fine, but I gave up napping around age 3. I still have to be really sick or pretty much exhausted in order to have a daytime nap, and I envy people who tell me how refreshing a 20-minute nap can be.
      Perhaps the child doesn't require a nap anymore, and will rest at night without that. I love your idea of audiobooks, I would have enjoyed that as a child - but it would have required a record player!

    • @MMuraseofSandvich
      @MMuraseofSandvich 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I've suffered from insomnia because of tinnitus for decades now. Audiobooks work great, but because I use them to distract my brain from the screaming 7kHz tone that's constantly there and because devices are not that great at detecting a sleeping person and turning off the audiobook player, I often miss big chunks of them.

    • @margaretwordnerd5210
      @margaretwordnerd5210 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm 67, and have had insomnia since I was born. It is very difficult to sleep if I don't have a good audio book. In dire times, it takes *intense* fiction to drive back reality. The meme where Stephen King offers to tell a bedtime story? His monsters or a mind-bending murder mystery distract me when real life is most menacing. Fictional scary things are a comfort because they let me escape stress and sleep. With weird dreams, but at least I sleep.✌🖖

    Beau speaks the truth. When I first met my husband, I barely gave him a second thought, and was not looking for a relationship at all. He came into my work after barely talking to each other at all, and dropped a paper bag at my register, then walked away. I opened it and found two Monkees pins, which at the time was my favorite band, and still has a special place in my heart. Since we'd barely spoken, I had no idea that he knew. It was a small thing (and in hindsight, he probably stole them) but it made a huge difference.

She also got to practice her hot glue skills. People she sends them to have been dying over the last few years, but she makes new friends to add to her list. I used to make them with my Girl Scout troops, and we would go to a local care center to hand them out. Gave a lot of people a smile, and my girls gave hugs with the valentines.

    My husband and I were married almost 40 years and he always left his T-shirts turned inside out to wash, drove me crazy. He knew it did. He came running joke. And now after I he's been gone 5 years from cancer, I'd give anything to have inside out t-shirts to wash. You'll miss having those cups sitting around someday. Instead I go to news websites & read the headlines & then choose what I can handle at the moment. If still upset I agree with Mrs Beau I watch Mr Beau & chill back out!!! Beau has talked me down many a time with his logic & suddenly things didn't seem so bad!!! 😊

    Some time ago, Beau said Ms. Beau's top things were kids, pets & vets. So that was a dead giveaway about who wants more animals. I think you have GSDs, but get yourself a couple of livestock guardian dogs (like Pyrenees or Anatolians) and then you can confidently bring on the chickens and goats! With a couple fences and a coop and a place in the barn. Ducks are fun too. And I wish I had gotten peacocks back when I had the chance too. P.S. my previous GSD was 14 when she passed. I wish I could have given her steak at the end, but she struggled with flair ups of pancreatitis the last 4 or 5 years. And she REALLY loved carrots & pecans, so thats what we did. But what a wonderful thing to do for Baroness.

    19:09 Risk mitigation 101: Preventing something bad from happening cannot be measured. We cannot know how many fires have been stopped by fire prevention efforts.
    You can create a hypothetical cost-benefit analysis, but in the end, the risks are never absolute. Risk mitigation helps never realize those risks.
    To Beau's point, don't discount the value of peace-of-mind.

    😮Thank you for inviting Ms Beau to join in today's talk.
    I can appreciate the many similarities that our household has with those on your ranch.
    We kept 3 horses for 14 years, and I was the person who tended to the chores that go along with keeping horse's.
    It is a relationship that is very unique to experience as you learn the individual horse-onalities.
    We have a 30 acre farmstead in northwestern Pennsylvania that was once kept in the normal fashion meant to produce fodder for the livestock and a home garden for winter fare. However, over the past decade, we have allowed the hay fields to return to their natural state and given it over to the wildlife.

    What Mrs. Beau said about lip gloss reminded me of my own "we're in it for the long haul" moment - it very was early, like only 2 dates in early, he texted me "I'm at this club, thinking of you, wanna meet?", I said "I do! bit i'm really tired today, dunno if I can make it :(" and he asked me about my day, paid attention that I haven't eaten at work at all, so he offered to come and make me dinner. Arrived with groceries in hand too, I didn't have to stress about anything. That was the evening I went from interested to head over heels in love. Men, take note!

    My husband and I were married on Valentines day....49 years ago. We too had that one moment between us, that we each knew we had found the one. It's not always easy, there are so many struggles, heartaches and changes in life, and to know we always, always have each others back is essential to a long marriage. Even when we are upset with each other...which is normal and sometimes often in our 70's and we can't see or hear well...we always are each others very best friend. To the person concerned about whether or not you are "ocerreacting" about you and your family's safety, I say this to you:
    When it comes to you, your spouse, and you're child's safety... if you don't do enough to keep yourselves safe? You will know.
    But if you do enough, or more than necessary, to keep your faimily and yourself safe? You will never know for sure.
    Another point:
    People who don't have to deal with the threats that you have to deal with get to think about *your* safety without any risk to themselves. Because of that, things will always work out like this:
    • If they are right, nothing happens to them.
    • If they are wrong, nothing happens to them.
    But...
    • If YOU are right, nothing happens to you and yours.
    • If *YOU* are wrong, then you and your family will be faced with the consequences and repercussions of you failing to act when you had the chance to do so.
    The people that carry the threat are the people who's opinions matter the most. Those who do not have any "skin in the game" don't get to have an opinion that weighs more than your opinion weighs.
