Only had about 7 kids do it, but it led to a lot of talk about the importance of voting. My sister and her husband loved snowmobiling. They joined a rescue group!
Yeah, Americans tend to love coming up with solutions that have never worked. Infrastructure, economical structure, power structure, steel fence structure, etcetera
To the person who lost a friend that was important to you, I'm proud of you for trying and for being introspective. It's not an easy thing for people to look inward. Indeed it seems to be something most people shy away from. Regardless of all else, you have something you can feel about yourself for that being a part of who you are now. It's all about out willingness to evolve. Just remember we're all always somewhere in the middle of evolution. 😊

Do you foresee the current election cycle resulting in 60 sitting Republican senators when the RNC is going to be "using every penny" to reelect 45? I don't think rule 22 can be changed without meeting that threshold, and I doubt democrats would vote with them to remove it under those circumstances...
Thanks to the Beau Peep who asked about hobbies. Good conversation starter with new people. Rather than what do you do for a living? What are your hobbies? Engaging in an imaginary situation conversation would be more useful in New company.
My husband and our poodles (Amanda and then Foyle) did wilderness search and rescue for 20 years. In Washington State, on a county by county basis, overseen by the Sheriff, there are search and rescue units. Each unit is a 501c3 organization and must meet state standards for training and certification. My husband’s unit was in a different county than where we lived. He and our dogs were air scenting teams, trained to find human scent, alive or dead, on the ground, under water, and in snow. His wilderness skills, started in Boy Scouts, served him well. That county had horse, water, quad, high angle, radio, and ground pounder teams. He logged thousands of miles a year going to training twice a month and out on searches. And the esprit d’corps that forms crosses all boundaries. When my husband died unexpectedly (even though he had retired from search when we moved to a new part of the state), the funeral home notified our local Search and Rescue team and five members showed up at the funeral home to escort his body in. Yes… Your community can absolutely use your skills.
When trying to clear out the bigotry many/all of us were raised in, one must study the bigotry, the systemic problems that bigotry creates... AND find people in those groups to learn from (and not just about bigotry). Representation matters, and not just to members of the group represented. It's also a way to get your brain to make positive associations. Many of us have some leftover crap in our mental attics that we inherited and aren't aware of until we stumble into it as the people we are now. That can absolutely cause those "I realized what I was saying too late." moments. And there's just no quick and easy way to remove what are essentially, bigotry land mines.
I would like to see the party of Eisenhower. Of course even then he wasn't a real Republican. More like an actual leader who could have been president in either party. Eisenhower's opinion of Reagan would probably have been unprintable.
You might look up Eisenhower and Executive order 10450 which barred gay and lesbian citizens from being employed by the federal government. This was coined as the Lavender Scare which became bizarrely intermixed with the communist scare of the Cold War era. I don’t think we’d want Eisenhower’s brand of republicanism either. And not only was I this year old when I learned of the Lavender Scare, it was only in the last few years I learned about the Tulsa massacre-I am deeply discouraged by what historians deemed worthy to learn in my education experience-I am 51 and finishing my PhD. How can we know what we need to know when we don’t know what we don’t know? Just keep digging.
As for Republicans endorsing Biden, I find it extremely unlikely from the names that would make a difference. Example is Sunnunu NH. He was all-in an Haley, and have made multiple statements about Trump that appealed to undeclared voters, but he just showed his true colors by endorsing him. This is the kind of behavior that keeps showing that for politicians it's party over country because that is the only way they can stay in power.
He almost had me believing him. Glad I didn't vote for him. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.

To the ' what do I do now' question: I overcame much by retracing where I learned it, by remembering the instance of utterance by the individual, and challenging them in my mind.
One thing that might help the friendship is to admit your issue and let them know they are important enough to you that you want their help by calling you out each and every time so you can learn what and why you are offensive. I had a friendship that I had to do that. I would call her out and explain what and why. I will admit, after a year she started to gravitate back to the people who justified her prejudice and I had to cut the relationship. So opening your eyes to toxic relationships that go against the strives you are trying to make will make a big difference too. I pray you are successful in continuing to open your heart and mind and regain your friendship.❤
Dog training is another useful hobby. Dogs can find people that can't be seen with the naked eye, e.g. trapped under snow or under bushes or whatever..
And rats! They can go in places that even dogs are too big to get to, especially in rubble!!! (Of course, we can only hope that people in the rubble won’t be freaked out by the fact that a rat with a little baby backpack is coming up to them!!! 😬😢)
Regarding changing habits = we spent quite a few years putting up with friends' racism, sexism, xenophobia etc. powered by the church; so many times did we say 'hang on a minute.....' and explained our position, but they just doubled down. Eventually the friendships were ended as we couldn't stomach it anymore. But understand fully, that people send out many signals to these nasty people before ending the friendship. This doubling down is sickening and we believe has been fueled by the trump phenomenon.
Cross stitchers, like other needleworkers often use their hobby and design talents to raise money for causes . I have participated in fundraisers for Planned Parent Hood, Doctors without Borders, Palestinian Children's Relief Fund, a local Hmong support organization, breast cancer, multiple trans and LGBTQ rights organizations and funds, Alzheimer's research, MMIW and many more. Sometimes saving lives means slow, patient, meticulous work by small groups of dedicated stitchers. And it is not just old ladies that stitch...you would not want to cross some of these craftivists! (Also thank you for mentioning the Nigerian kidnappings and the tragic events in Haiti.)
9:30 to the person who lost a friendship because of stereotyping and sexism. As Beau said: work on it. Maybe write a letter to your old friend explaing like you have done to Beau. Say that you are sorry and that you are working on it. Say that you care about the friendship and hope to see them in a while. Be sincere and do not expect them to contact you. If you are aware what was your mistake you are already one step in the right direction. Maybe talk with other friends about this. Wishing you to sort that out and later on to rekindle the friebdship. And make new ones.
Kudos to the guy who is working on reforming his views. Positive change takes work and it takes time. Education, quitting addictions, doing better in relationships...they are all a long and ongoing process. I wish him all success. As for the Rs, I'd love it if they wanted the party of Eisenhower back, hell, even Nixon (I can't believe I said that). Reagan was the beginning of the whole move towards authoritarianism.
As far as hobbies useful in emergencies or survival situations: I think the key here is NOT to go into it because you want to learn a survival skill. You should do the things that are the most fun and enjoyable to you - these are the ones that you'll dive into deepest and get the most from. Do the hobby first and get into it with as much time and passion as you possibly can. The more experience you get with it, the better you will be at applying it to survival situations. For example, I didn't learn how to preserve meats because of some apocalypse scenario, I did it because bacon, pastrami, and pepperoni are delicious. I can survive in the woods for several weeks just because I don't like people that much and being away from them gives me great joy, and sometimes I can give them bacon to make them go away
they probably do want alaska back. they're not gonna get it. let them try. me,i'/m still waiting for China and Japan to resolve their territorial disputes w russia now. seems like a great time.
It's his profession, not his hobby, but José Andrés has done amazing things with World Central Kitchen. If you know how to obtain ingredients and to cook for a crowd, that is a valued skill in a crisis. If you're a hand- or machine-knitter, what you turn out could save lives. Hobbies don't have to be outdoor and rugged to make a difference.
It's amazing to me just how many people come here to ask him questions without actually doing the least bit of research first. I still understand why, and though I don't myself want to be Shell's Answer Man, I'm impressed that Beau steps up every week and answers questions from people without batting an eye.
Along with rights come responsibilities. They are inseparable. The right to a trial by jury comes with the responsibility to serve on a jury when called. That's how it works. Voting is very much the same. It's your right, but it's also your *responsibility* Shame on citizens that actively shirk their responsibilities and are proud of it.
Very cool insight on hobbies. I tried to think of a hobby to cross off and thought of quilting, then realized that people in emergencies absolutely need blankets! Displaced after fires, floods, hurricanes, etc. The homeless. People in emergency shelters. Brilliant insight!
The right doesn't seem to understand that encouraging people to vote is NOT the same thing as telling them WHO or WHAT to vote for. It's really not that complicated but they make it out to be .
They do understand. As they understand that their Party hasn't the support of a majority of the voters. The more people express their will, the less likely they are to stay in power. This is even more pronounced among the younger voters, those who don't get their news from cable TV...
For the person whose prejudice has cost a friendship: you don't have to believe the first thing you think. What's important is NOT the first knee-jerk reaction that comes into your head when you see someone you used to instinctively dislike because of race, sex, etc., but the follow-up thought. "No, I don't think that way any more. This is a human being, as unique as I am."
One massive hobby that I can think of would be the big giant 4x4s that go swamping to rescue people every time there's a flood in Florida or a hurricane.
No Beau, the person who they hurt may never forgive them and they have a right to not forgive them. OP can start over with their new self and new people. Forgiveness and rekindling of friendship is not always possible and it is never owed.
Honestly, there is not a lot of context in the question itself to determine if it's actually salvageable. However on the main channel there are videos going over this same topic, including what you're saying almost verbatim. My question is this: should they just give up without at least trying first?
Probably not but from what Beau read it sounded as if their might have already been an attempt to salvage things and it was less than successful. The important thing is to respect the other person's wishes in these types of situations.@@kingfenrir227
As for 'Peace talks' in Ukraine, if I were the president of Ukraine I'd ask for guidance as to how much land would the EU and NATO nations be willing to give up for peace.
The answer is none. Zelensky doesn't care if Putin wants land. Zelensky will NEVER care if Putin wants land. Putin already HAD the land. Putin did not do anything useful to MAINTAIN the land. Putin wouldn't even pay taxes ON the land.
In the real world, and they teach people this in Kindergarten, when we do not take care of the things we have when we have them in life we lose the privilege of having those things. If Putin wants peace, he will worry less about the North European Plain and oil in Crimea and more about getting a Kindergarten level education for himself.
Re MREs: A quick explanation, of how to read the indicator circle might help. Most folks don’t know that the inspection date, is not a pull date, but in fact just an inspection date, and that the indicator is what you check. The colder they are stored, the longer they last.
Your first thoughts are habit/training. Your second thoughts are what you really believe. The trick is not letting your first thoughts come out of your mouth all the time. This is the way to overcome sexism, racism, and all the other -isims.

For those seeking information on bettering yourself, Jay Shetty has wonderful videos. He has self help videos and he also has interviews with people who are going through, or have gone through, some of life's challenges that you may be going through. He not only deals with self care and relationship building, but he also discusses self awareness without pointing fingers or assigning blame. I don’t get the pushback against Miss Swift. She is a beautiful talented young woman who has done more to help citizens than our own government. And to encourage her fans to vote well that could go either way she didn’t endorse either party.
Change is hard. It's non-linear and sometimes the old ways of thinking come back, and it can even feel easier just to back to the way things were before. It can also be costly- I lost all my old friends and church in the process. But if you stick to it, it will definitely be worth it in the end ❤️
Love the question about hobbies. Crafty folks who could sew distributed masks during the early days of covid when the appropriate masks weren't available. They don't offer as much protection as a proper mask, but they do help. I've known people who love to knit who make blankets for the homeless. Any hobby can be helpful. Just get creative.
The question, and your response, re hobbies and emergencies certainly gets the brain humming. Do what you can do when it is needed. For many of those discussed, would it make sense for some of these hobbiests and groups to get on the roster of search and rescue or emergency groups so they know who they can call to assist? But so many other little things.... If you are a quilter with a batch of mostly done projects, and your neighborhood goes cold, get them out there. If you are a bowyer, can you get a rope to a family trapped on a roof in a flood to help them get down to the boat safely? If your community has a bridge down, and you are a canner, spread the wealth! So many smallerthings....
When I was working as a professional backcountry charter pilot, I used an airplane to look for downed aircraft. Not even a hobby then, but it would be now and I still would go look for folks if there was a need and I had the opportunity

Even hobbies like tabletop roleplay can have a place to shine in an emergency: through the roleplaying game, you practice decision-making skills in limited time with limited resources. That said, just because your character has +6 to Use Rope doesn't mean that you the person can do so...
To the person who lost a recent friendship and who’s trying to change: maybe (I do not know) you can speed the change process by immersion. Maybe volunteer with aid organizations where you can meet people who have been impacted by isms or associate with people trying to create change. Sometimes, isms come from not having any experience of the group we ism against. Yeah, a lot of maybe and generalizations… it’s just a thought
Can we get a collection of Beau-isms. Change is not an event it’s a process. Foreign affairs is about power and is a giant poker game where everyone cheats. Etc. all the sound bites written out or a video that shares them with brief annotations.

When I was a high school librarian, we offered a deal where if you registered to vote (we had the postcards) all overdue book fines would be wiped. (Seniors only of course.) Only had about 7 kids do it, but it led to a lot of talk about the importance of voting.
My sister and her husband loved snowmobiling. They joined a rescue group!
Daughter is a librarian at the college in state capital, they had a registration to vote drive for the student body.
Definitely, I would hate to see another Reagan era. Reaganomitics got us in this mess.
But there are way too many Americans that think they are the solution to this problem

If the Republicans win the senate, you better believe that filibuster will be gone in day 1. Sinema and Manchin will not be missed.
Historians in the future will be describing an era in which humans poisoned themselves with plastics and lies. 😢

It's too bad there's no kind of theory to study about race and the effects of existing within the system we have. That would be critical.
Reading the book CASTE has helped me learn.
Sorry, that was a general statement laced with a little bitterness, not a direct reply. I'm glad you're experiencing personal growth.

“Change is not an event, it’s a process.” Here here.
At the State of the union Mitt Romney stood up and joined the dems chant of 4 more years!
He almost had me believing him. Glad I didn't vote for him. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.

Sir Beau, VERY wise & measured take on Ayiti (Haiti). Both named countries getting involved WOULD indeed only exacerbate that situation.Thank you.🙏🏽
Regarding changing habits = we spent quite a few years putting up with friends' racism, sexism, xenophobia etc. powered by the church; so many times did we say 'hang on a minute.....' and explained our position, but they just doubled down. Eventually the friendships were ended as we couldn't stomach it anymore. But understand fully, that people send out many signals to these nasty people before ending the friendship. This doubling down is sickening and we believe has been fueled by the trump phenomenon.
Thank you for this longer video to have on a sunday ☕

Good morning Beau and internet folks. Happy Daylight Savings Time!
Love from VietNam Beau!!!

Beau: "The pressure cannot hurt."
Biden watching: "C'mon Jack, I'm following all your ideas as best I can"
It's amazing to me just how many people come here to ask him questions without actually doing the least bit of research first.

It's your right, but it's also your *responsibility*
Shame on citizens that actively shirk their responsibilities and are proud of it.
Hobbies: if you can organize a swingers party, you can organize a volunteer search party. 😊😊😊
The right wants to control who gets to vote.
Thanks. BEAU and crew!
No Beau, the person who they hurt may never forgive them and they have a right to not forgive them. OP can start over with their new self and new people. Forgiveness and rekindling of friendship is not always possible and it is never owed.
THIS!
Honestly, there is not a lot of context in the question itself to determine if it's actually salvageable. However on the main channel there are videos going over this same topic, including what you're saying almost verbatim. My question is this: should they just give up without at least trying first?
True
Probably not but from what Beau read it sounded as if their might have already been an attempt to salvage things and it was less than successful. The important thing is to respect the other person's wishes in these types of situations.@@kingfenrir227
@@kingfenrir227if the person doing the cutting off told them they're done, then yes!

What I like about him is that, like Beau, he recognizes that people are human, and he tends to point out some of the characteristics that can lead to a negative life experience and ways that you can work on changing them in your life.
