Now they sit on my desk as a reminder of what propaganda and cultural infiltration looks like.

I didn't know about a war, and my nephew, Joey, was in the 24th infantry on the front line. I felt bad and began cutting out every article in every paper every day. I purchased things like trading cards, balloons, ribbons, and added them to this massive scrapbook for him. I also remember being on a flight, and the pilot announced the war was over. My nephew and two of his brothers returned home safely. I remember the cards and these times, knowing how busy we are when raising a family and how little time there is to follow current events, much less foreign policy, especially when it comes to elections.
I was 12 when the Persian Gulf war started. I remember all the merchandise you could buy to support the war, including the trading cards with photos if A10 Warthogs and Abrams tanks and Storming Norman Schwarzkopf. Manufacturing consent could be also called marketing consent, or merchandising consent.
My little league baseball team that year was called The Patriots, and we had a picture of a patriot missile on our jerseys. I was to young at the time to get it.
@markevans8206 If you sit down and have a beer with the MAGA folks, you might find there is a deal to be done on universal healthcare. Left and right wing populists come together on this issue. But entrenched interests will fight it tooth and nail.
I love how Beau slyly slips in the anecdote about the poor woman who can’t afford the baby formula to briefly remind us that there are important battles we need to fight at home.
I don't recall the Denobian attack on an American ship and murder of American sailors causing any such consent campaign, nor any great public outrage. Perhaps if that had happened the current situation would not have happened. For want of a nail a shoe was lost, for want of a shoe, a horse, etc. Those who do not learn from history may well be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.
Let us very much hope this shift happens and soon. Unfortunately, I think the King (along with some other Kings) is hoping for a change in leadership HERE in order to keep doing what he wants in Denovia.

So this all leafs me to the following question. Doesn't a person need to be a sociological psychopath in order to be considered for the job of secretary of state? When I look at Blinkin, I can't see any actual human being.
I will bet everything on that it is more than the home guard acting very naughty. In both in this fictional world and what is going over there in this world.
I always look for shifts in narrative from the government. When I first cracked Manufacturing Consent I was far too young to fully understand, the book was just there in the house. Fast forward to 89/91 can’t remember exactly and the Globe and Mail, conservative newspaper in Canada, was discussing census results. All they said was gay men in Canada had the largest percentage of disposable earnings in the country. Everyone picked it up and I thought to myself WE DID IT !!! Finally the beginning of actual change and that’s taken decades of pain to achieve and we’re not nearly there still! The people of Denovia don’t have the time. Frankly the great unwashed have already given consent and it takes too long to get it from the elites. What next???
Moral of the story: If you see someone stealing baby formula, no you didn't.

@@lawrenceksyahoocom…depending on the level of gerrymandering in any given district!😮
Or protests put down on college campuses
So true! We have the power that we believe we have!
The US went to way too much trouble just to get rid of the guy they helped install in Iraq.
To say nothing of all the other places they meddled in.
“DeNovia” needs to be labeled what it is. A Fascist Theocracy
From the allegorical Land to the metaphorical Sea, Denovia will be Free!
Maybe this could be played in Congress. They need all the help they can get.
Blahbidy Blaiba?!? I f'n Love it
The Mouse that Roared.
Any use of the term "Manufacturing Consent" should mention the seminal book with the same name by Chomsky & Herman.
It's like using the term "pirates and emperors". Either people know or they Google it and they see it.
Blahdia Blarabia from now on.
Ugh.. this was exactly what happened in Libya in 2011, manufactured consent and now the state is in case of perpetual chaos
This is fascinating and also scary!
Meanwhile, the planet is on fire.
Denovisians we’re early humans like Neanderthals!
People will believe why do you think people believe in the soaps?
We need to start some of this after the election to expand the supreme court
Let us very much hope this shift happens and soon. Unfortunately, I think the King (along with some other Kings) is hoping for a change in leadership HERE in order to keep doing what he wants in Denovia.
You are such a wonderful story teller. I was positively transfixed, and so many of my knowledge gaps were filled and understanding set in. 10 gold stars
This was outstanding. Thanks.
Masterful
🙏🏽
Noam Chomsky, first real thinky book I bought as a kid
A must read.
I make it a point not to listen to the opinions of genocide deniers, so do you have someone actually worth reading for me to look at?
That was a damn site more than "just a thought" .......that was a hypothetical analogy masterclass!!. No notes 👏👏👏👏. I know it's probably not your scene, but being a lecturer/teacher in schools would be big step up for the next generation! 💁♂️
Best explanation of foreign policy i have ever heard. Gonna tag this video for my center right winged friends.
Dang, the work of empire sounds exhausting.
Free Gallestine!
Will we ever be able to vote in enough politicians who no longer want to play Masters of the Universe?
The answer is in your question: "politicians". Very unlikely.
To prepare an omelette, who cares how many eggs must be cracked. Breakfast is served. President Shinra.
You explain everything so well, Beau. You really do help those of us (and I'm assuming there are others like me) who don't really understand the finer points of war and peace!!
So this all leafs me to the following question. Doesn't a person need to be a sociological psychopath in order to be considered for the job of secretary of state? When I look at Blinkin, I can't see any actual human being.
As a deadhead l love metaphors and you (Beau) did a fine job at using them. Great way of tie-in the the facts and your story altogether.
I love the metaphor just slowly becoming less and less subtle
I will bet everything on that it is more than the home guard acting very naughty. In both in this fictional world and what is going over there in this world.
Has been for years, "home guard" doing naughty and ugly things, along with the "merchants" who take stuff to sell for themselves.
The irony that Netanyahu lives so close to the Nile and is living in denial
'Yellow ribbon.'
Would they be tied around an old oak tree and wasn't that song about tax evasion?..
Thank you Mr. B.
Wow, Beau, you're on FIRE! This is a brilliant piece. Not a children's book approach, this is for big people.
Except gay men never had the disposable income as cited. It was hogwash.
Blaudia Blabia may be the best thing I've heard all week
Personally it was "weapons, berets, ray bans, whatever you need".
