      They hate San Fransisco too though, and that's a many decades long hate. I grew up across the bay from SF, so I've experienced it all too often. But yea, They've been told most recently to hate Taylor, so I don't doubt they would so randomly hate a red state team even more right now. There is no rhyme nor reason to the delusional cowardice of bigots.

    My dad had a cutting horse, Tater Chip, that could turn on a dime and give a nickel change. He also had a dog, Dawg, that had been rescued from a man that had never released it from the chain which collared its neck and attached to a pole. Dawg and Tater Chip would follow Dad as though a part of his shadow. The fun part was to look out into the field and see Tater Chip and Dawg faced off against each other in a crouching position and then simultaneously run at each other like a game of chicken. There was swirving and quick dodging displaying cunning athletics. Then, they would line up and do it all over again. They were good friends that, when not playing, would walk side by side.

    So the party now says Jacqoutte Delahaye did not exist because she was black and a woman. Born the daughter of a Frenchman and a Haitian woman in 17th century, Jacquotte Delahaye stole untold fortunes and captured the imaginations of many seafaring storytellers. This buccaneer lost her mother to childbirth and her brother was mentally handicapped, and once her father was murdered Delahaye was left alone to care for him. Legend has it that piracy is how she managed to do just that.

    • @markbooth3066
      @markbooth3066 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      Sadly there are no contemporary accounts of her life, and "many of the stories seem to originate from 1940s writer, Léon Treich" (according to Royal Museums Greenwich).
      So while she may not be a good example of a 'real life' pirate, she does strongly establish a precedent in faction dating back almost a hundred years.

      These same folks probably haven't heard of Ching Shih, aka Zheng Yi Sao, the greatest Chinese pirate, leader of the Red Fleet, who had as many as 1800 ships and 80,000 pirates marauding the South China Sea. She stomped on all the competition and was a shrewd negotiator, enabling her and her people to retire/become part of the establishment.
      A Google search should be sufficient to shut down the female/"black" female pirate argument.

      Mainland USA would definitely burn. Literally. I can easily envision various local police/gov agencies dividing against each other within the states; I.e. city vs county vs state. Families are already killing each other in the more extreme cases, so to quote a certain movie “just a little..push”. And very few states are actually all red or blue. They all have pockets of opposition. Chaotic is imho, an understatement and being very generous.

      When Roe was overturned, she clapped back at the Republican party and told the 18+Swifties to vote at her concerts. Then the vitriol started.

    For the guy who wants to ask a woman on a date, I echo Beau's advice. I also want to give the guy props for being conscious of potential issues, and wanting to make sure he doesn't add to the problem. I don't know about younger women, but I would typically not accept a first date on Valentine's. Too much pressure. Dinner is nice, as it gives you a chance to talk and get to know each other, which clubs, etc. make hard. If you know enough about her to offer an event involving a shared interest, consider that option. Offer the choice of picking her up or meeting there, so you are both being polite, and letting her set her safety parameters. Good luck!

I deployed to Bosnia for six months in 1998-1999 and it was sobering to hear the stories of the people who survived the war and all its consequences. It cut close to home for my dad was born in Yugoslavia not long after the country was formed after WWI. Also sobering is to stand on a Sarajevo Rose, a red painted plastered over scar of pavement where people were killed while queued up for food.

    There were black pirates who ran with Black Beard, some of whom were former slaves.
    One black captain, Jacquotte Delahaye, aka Back From the Dead Red, was the daughter of a Haitian woman and a Frenchman. Legend has it that Captain Delahaye became a pirate to support her mentally handicapped brother. She took uncounted numbers of rich ships making herself a legend.

      My girlfriend at the time went to an all-girls college, and I got to know many of the women there surprisingly well. Every Valentine's Day for years, a friend and I would just wander around and hand out 3 dozen long stem roses to people we saw. It would start at that school, but it was still in a city infamous for its bad attitude, and always ended up just wandering through the city passing them out, wishing strangers the best.
      I never had any negative reaction from anyone, even the total strangers. Not even the guys we'd occasionally slip flowers to. Everyone was just pleasantly surprised at the least, and more than one person had tears in their eyes because no one had ever given them anything like that before.
      I just don't think a lot of younger generations have the social skills to understand the real world all that well. I can't say I blame them, but turning to the internet for answers clearly hasn't helped most of them so far. Beau is one of the few decent choices and it's *always* a better idea to be more aware than less so, but the real world still hasn't changed all that much over the years.

    On the dating thing, just even acknowledging that it might be awkward, or uncomfortable, can go a long way like "...if you don't want to, or don't feel that it's appropriate, I fully understand." As a neurodivergent person who finds all conversations uncomfortable, I have always hedged any approach, even with long time friends. Heck even with my husband, after almost 20 years, I might suggest we watch a movie tonight, but "no worries if you've got something you want to get done, we can plan to watch it another time". Basically I just always make room for the fact that I'm not the protagonist in a videogame, and other people can have plans, or not be interested, or whatever. The more you can demonstrate that you are a reasonable person, the less worried people need to be that you're a violent jerk.

      Are you sure???
      Team sports is really just highly stylized mock tribal war.
      From WAY back it was realized that civilization past a certain size depended equally on Bread AND Circuses.
      I'm pretty sure there was at least one well documented incident of Fan Zeal spilling out of the stadium and basically burning Byzantium to the ground in a bloody Civil War where the differences between Team Jersey Color and political affiliation kinda got cross-wired.

      That’s what I thought too. As soon as I heard Yugoslavia I felt nauseous. I’m still feeling pretty unsettled and searching through the comments for…I don’t know what…somebody to tell me they disagree? Hope? I remember hearing accounts from women who survived. It was some of the most horrific accounts of violence I’ve ever heard. The fact we are even talking about that as a possibility makes me want to throw up.

    • @erinmac4750
      @erinmac4750 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a possibility. However, the side committing the violence isn't going to have legitimate cause. It'll probably be more like the Middle East having to deal with Daesh (ISIS), women, children and any minorities having much to fear.

      Very much comparable to the Troubles, I think - but only in the asymmetric warfare angle.

    When I was young... a loonngg time ago, a guy at work asked me out, and I said, "Thank you for asking, but no." He didn't ask if I was seeing someone or had a reason... he let loose with angry insults. The manager found out from other employees and fired him.
    I used to get stroked from guys behind me in line. Usually, just stepping forward stopped the insult. Once, I was bumped repeatably by a jerk's crotch. When I whirled around fists clenched, it was an older, smiling, skinny guy about a foot shorter than me. I growled. He lost the grin and hurriedly stepped back. I glared at the watching guys in line behind him and snarled, "What the hell?!" They lost their smiles, and I stomped out of the restaurant. Now that I'm grey-haired, I'm ignored... a relief.
    I don't expect guys to hold the door open for me or to not curse in every sentence. But, internally, I sigh at the waste of time and effort to pick out the point of their communication... usually, it's just whining.
    Once in a while, I run across a guy who can communicate and wants to do so without condescending or cursing. Such a delight!

    Regarding Latin America, for folks who don’t feel like reading non-fiction, O Henry wrote a whole bunch of stories that give a humorous window into the shenanigans going on a hundred years ago. He even coined the expression “banana republic”.
    He also gave the inside scoop on grifters of various kinds. People could be inoculated against all kinds of stupidity just by reading lots of O Henry.

    Beau, just to broaden your perspective, I've *absolutely* had my day ruined just by a guy asking me out, even in a public place with people around and plenty of exits. If it isn't someone I'm interested in, it immediately spikes my anxiety and I'll have the jitters for a while. Maybe an hour or two, maybe the rest of the day, maybe longer, depending on the particulars of the situation. Being asked out is indeed a trigger for some people. So my answer to the asker, on top of what Beau said, is to make it explicitly clear that it will be fine if the woman says no.
    Knowing that you recognize the issue and the assurance that you won't punish her will probably do a lot to mitigate the anxiety. The one time I've had a guy friend ask me out and NOT punish me afterwards for saying no was very healing for me. It doesn't take away the trigger, but I'm more confident that saying "no" isn't *wrong* and I feel even more secure in that friendship than I did before. So if she does say no, if you're gentle and understanding, it may end up being a good thing in the long run that she had a safe experience with rejection, whether you're friends or just acquaintances / just met. (And then again, it may not -- someone with the same trigger may process things very differently than I do. Everyone's brain wiring from genetics and experience is unique to them. 😔 But a little bit of risk is unavoidable and it's not unethical of you to ask.)
