Honestly, not just the PhD but everyone needs to stop with the reflexive "that could never possibly happen" belief. That's how we ended up with Brexit and Trump. Brexit happened because enough people voted to make their displeasure known but didn't think it could actually happen. Trump became POTUS because people disliked HRC a LOT and either voted for Trump, not at all, or for a third party/write in in just the right places so he got the electoral win. (His ego couldn't accept the fact he didn't have a majority of actual votes, too.)

As a criminal justice/law major, I appreciate the effort to educate those that have gone through the prison system. Education is definitely one thing that has shown to reduce recidivism, so great work on that
Our prison system is literally one of the most expensive and least effective option we have. We could do education, therapy, moving people to a different location, whatever. It would all be less expensive than prison and likely far more effective. We just have this almost puritanical need to punish everyone. As harshly as possible. It's almost a cultural fetish this point, and it sure as hell hasn't solved anything for us. If anything, it created far more problems than it could ever solve.

Better people than me have answered that question in more detail than I ever could here. The prison and police abolition movements go back decades in the US. This is hardly a new question, and if you're genuinely looking for what some folks would rather see I'd recommend reading some Angela Davis, or anything about the restorative justice or transformative justice movements. It's way too expansive a topic to be covered in a TH-cam reply that may or may not get eaten.

The car break-ins in Rifle Colorado have been blamed almost entirely on drug users, specifically meth. It's been a constant problem for at least 10 years.
