Love this. Its amazing how much snobbery and silly stuff goes on about tents. The vast majority of camping is summer fair weather camping and a cheap dome tent can handle this with aplomb. If you want it to be stronger and more water proof then you can can seam seal and spray it, swap the poles for alu and stitch stronger guying points. I mean why does everyone have to have a super expensive tent? LONG LIVE the humble dome tent.

What's a Tint?

The price is ridiculous and they have recently increased their prices again. For this kind of money you would be expecting perfection however their not. My soulo is terrible for condensation and they leak around the zips. The ajto is also bad for this too. The company has priced themselves out in my opinion now.

I bought a Mont Moondance 1. It has great space and packs down quite small. But does anyone else have a problem with it leaking around the top vent when it rains or even just in a shower?

Great video! I have an old 60L backpack I bought used and has been incredible reliable! But I want to change it since its already too old. Any recommendations for backpacks? Mine is cheap American Outback 50$ and I would want some very durable like this one doesn't matter the price!

Had 2 tents fail. first one was in 80mph forecast winds, got flattened, used my rucksack to take the weight of the wind of me inside the tent until daylight. 2nd one got ripped out of the ground in 90mph forecast winds when a gust shot in the door , got dragged along hanging onto the guyline till the gust died, then stuffed the tent with its contents into a survival bag and gtfo. Current tent, double poling it with 10mm poles

Excellent advise. Fyi the colour also affects how your tent performs when its hot. If you have a dark coloured tent then you will overheat in warm or hot weather because it absorbs a lot more energy from the sun and heats up inside.

I got the same tent for $14 at Kmart here in Perth, & it's great for the beach! It also has a UV protection rating of 95+! I'm 5' 8" tall, so there was enough space for ME!

Tents I had at one time were hilleberg, an Akto, Soulo, nallo, namatj, tarra. The nallo being the favourite except for storms for which the tarra was used. The akto was just used for short trips, the nammatj used once in the snow, the soulo not at all. The akto was ripped out of the ground in a 90mph storm, my fault, only damage being a slighly bent pole. Hillebrg recon that the Tarra can survive anything on the planet, which I can believe as sheds wind, having incredible strength aswell. It can also be double polled and secured with as many guylines as you want.

When I was a hillwalker, got a 3 season wild country mistrel tent flattened in a 80mph autumn storm so got hilleberg tents for safety since then ranging from the akto to the tarra. Have recently bought a hillberg anjan 2 3 season tent for solo cycle touring in the UK which has good ventilation, strong, easy to set up, large porch and hope to use it for 4 seasons in the UK as the only conditions it would not be ideal for is snow which I do not intend to be in in the first place. At 4lbs max weight it seems fine and fits in a pannier along with sleep bag and mat.

If you enjoy bad condensation, poor venting, poorly fitted zips, and bad customer service, all at a over the top premium price get a Hilleberg !

When I was shopping for a 4 season tent I considered Hilleberg and every other option. I ended up getting a Rab Latok Summit on sale imported from the UK. It’s low (80cm) and more a 1 person tent but has a HH of 15,000mm and weighs less than 1.5kg. They also have a bigger version called the Latok mountain 2 which is still less than 1.9kg. These are mountaineering tents designed for 8000m peaks so I figured it will stand up to anything. Would be great to see you review one too.

One thing I’ve effectively used several times in winter camping is a SOL Escape (emergency) bivy…super light and you can put your sleeping bag in it or vice versa to boost the temperature if it’s unexpectedly cold. Great video!..

Just to highlight the positives of the tunnel: I usually only bring my Hilly tunnel when I'm in conditions that warrant a pulk to carry the snow melting kitchen and weeks of sustenance required. Two reasons why I favor it: The setup. When I'm using a pulk, I will have my tunnel pre-poled, as in, the poles are already in the tent sleeves. All the pole joints, except the mid joint, are taped together with electrical tape. Once I'm ready to pitch, I connect the mid-joint, and now the tent is ready. This means there's minimal faffing about, so the mittens stays on, which is important. This allows me to quickly and easily set up my tunnel tent, even if I'm pitching solo in winds I can't stand up in, in as little as 10 minutes. I anchor it in the head wind, and let the wind "inflate" the tent for me. It's easier in high wind than no wind. I've not seen anyone pre-pole their tunnel tents on pulks outside Scandinavia/Greenland/Poles, but at least here here it's common. If I remember correctly, I think the type of tunnel tents used today were invented here in Scandinavia, specifically by (Norwegian) Helsport company in the 60s/70s. It's my favorite type tent for winter on Vidda (mountain plateau). Size of the tent doesn't alter the difficulty of set up. It's the same principle for Hilleberg Akto (1.5 kg) as it is for large expedition tents (Helsport Spitsbergen x-trem 4 (6 kg) with 5 m2). Since it's a pulk, weight is of almost no concern. Aside from ease of setup, another reason is the amount of space you can get is good. That's great if you're unlucky to be stranded in a week long blizzard far from civilization. Have a good one. :)

Hi there Barry, great videos. Keep it up. I'm also thinking of getting the Mont 1 FN as a 3+ season for those every changing NZ conditions, namely wind. I love the style of the Mont. How's it hold up in windy conditions? I'm torn between the Mont and the Wilderness Equipment Space 1 which are both Australian brands, very similar specs, but the Mont has more floor space and vibrant red, yet the WE looks like it might hold up to wind better in a more subdued green. Thoughts?

After experiencing sand flies I realised midgies weren't so bad.

Some legit tips here. I never thought about securing my tent to my backpack. Maybe I have in the past during a situation but as I'm preparing for my Scottish Highlands camp it's something I've overlooked thus far. Great wee video mate.

I went with the nemo kunai 2p, it's basically a 3 season 1.5 person tent... bought because it was cheap, less than $500 US with foot print. I just started backpacking, seems okay once it's all guyed out. I've gone down to -17F testing it and got out into the backcountry on snowshoes so far with it. Planning a 4 day adventure next month going for 35-40 miles on snowshoes! Will upgrade in future but for under 500 and 2 ish kg with 12 stakes will work for good while.
