    Solo Vs Group Backpacking - Which Is BEST?
    With the right planning, equipment and expereince, both solo and group backpacking can be safe and a ton of fun. I generally like to hike with a local group called the Christchurch Tramping Club - they're fun to be around. I also enjoy solo trips at times too. What's your goto choice between solo or group trips? Please put in the coments what you like best. Hope you enjoy this video. 😀

    Great videos Barry! My first long bush walk, with an experienced friend, opened my mind to the beauty and wildlife of our national parks. Walking or skiing solo became a necessity to satisfy the urge to go when friends weren’t available and this forced me to learn the basics and become self-reliant. It also gave me the time to perfect these skills in my own time. Others find the risks involved to be a barrier but I found it liberating and meditative…convivial chatter is great fun but can sometimes be just a bubble of noise that stops us hearing what surrounds us. And yet it is fantastic to share the highs and the lows of a demanding trip with good friends. It keeps us humble and connected. So there’s much to commend and to gain by walking with a group or on your own, as you say🙏 Learn to do both

      Thanks Jonathon. Glad you liked it. Yes, you raise some really good points. Pros and cons either way. The key is to do the things you enjoy the most, whether alone or in a group. Happy skiing, man. 😀

    Always solo, ultralight, and very seldom stay in huts. I often take a small bluetooth speaker and listen to chilled out music which is fine if you aren't bothering anyone.

    • @wildmountainman1

      That makes a lot of sense. I mainly like huts when it wet. However the freedom of a tent is hard to beat. Thanks for watching and all the best out there. 👍🏼

    I do both. Solo are usually more easier, populated tracks. And I go in groups of just friends or with a tramping club. I got more confident going solo but love learning from older members of the tramping club, and the companionship of my friends. I have the best if both worlds. And I always carry a PLB.

    Fantastic videos Barry.
    Thought provocative discussion.
    Weldone... can understand all of the points said.... excellent.
    Have never backpacked in a group. Being a person who is a bit of a recluse and only enjoy being with the wife... not really a people person.
    Me and the wife love to go backpacking for the adventure and to keep a 30 year relationship fresh and exciting...
    Backpacking and observing the wilderness is our escape from the modern world. And being in a spot without anyone else around is a fantastic feeling.
    Again.... totally get that people like to backpack in a group...makes a lot of sense.
    Not for me though..I like it quiet.
    Excellent video...
    Your comments about the avalanche and earthquake....wow.... you just never know what's going to happen!

      Hey Rich, as always, thanks for checking in! My wife and I have also been married for 30 years. 😀 I belong to a local tramping/hiking club and have made some excellent friends over the years and really enjoy travelling with them. However I fully understand your thoughts as well. Hanging out with your wife on trips would be a great way to get out and explore the country. Thanks for your kind comments too. All the best. 👍🏼

    Hiking. A group for me, as I am getting older and after an injury last year I am not so solid on my feet. So the safety in numbers. But also after a days hike it is nice to share a beer or other booze with people.

    Hi Barry. Another extremely well presented video thank you.. As you can guess its SOLO for me. I do love to camp with friends, not just other people that have an interest in camping... Its nice to pick your own location and do your own thing.. Although sharing the experience is good too.... I tend to go out when its windy or the conditions are harsh and not too many others fancy that.... ATB Tom

      Thanks Tom. Yes, you’re right, when others want to stay at home, you’re out having fun in your tent on some hill or mountain. At least that will you get the whole place to yourself and can do what best suits you. You and I will have to catch up and do something together sometime. That would be a fun trip. 😀

    Funny, I’ve just been sharing on this recently, very topical! For me it’s a combination of both group time and solo, with the benefits of solo outweighing group time. But there’s always time for you Saint Barry.

      You da man, Dave, thanks! I lean more towards the benefits of group outweighing solo trips. As long as people don’t mind my taking video footage and not being as fast uphill.

    Most of my trips are solo - set your own pace, go as far as you want, make your own risk decisions are the big upsides. The odd group trip is nice for a change of pace though!

      Thanks for checking in. Yeah I’m not the worlds tramper, so either solo trips or sympathetic friends when in a group really helps me.

      @tdiler12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Solo only I agree . Set own pace and the freedom of deciding everything and also really when there ‘s a group you’re at the mercy of people’s moods which end up affecting you who needs that? defeating
      the reason you’re out there in the first place.

    I much prefer solo. Then I only have myself to blame if it all goes wrong! Seriously, I am very slow and I dont like the feeling that Im holding others back. Filming doesnt help the speed. So its nice to go at my own pace and enjoy the process of getting where-ever Im going.

    Some great points there Mr Barry. Well done - another great video. That avo was indeed big - were there any indications if that was one big slide, or several layered up?

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Josh. Apart from the std Doc avo warning signs, there was no other indications there had been a recent avalanche. Curtis sent me a photo today of the same thing from 2016, so it seems this is quite common in this spot. It’s hard to show you in the vid just how steep and massive it was. It would have been very scary to have been there when it happened. Hard to say if it was one or a series though.

  • @kaytaylor9578
    @kaytaylor9578 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I started tramping it was a no-no to go solo, for safety reasons. No PLB's etc then, so it is definitely much safer now, and easier navigation with GPS. Would I do it? Not much, as I enjoy the companionship of tramping. And quite a few solo trampers have simply vanished over the years. It puts your risk factor up quite a lot. I tend to feel like a hermit with no friends when I tramp alone! Lol

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol! Yes I feel similar. I know some solo trampers keep to the main tracks and make friends with people in the huts at night, before carrying on the next day alone. It works for them I suppose. I do prefer the company of others though. 😀
