    Excellent advise.
    Fyi the colour also affects how your tent performs when its hot. If you have a dark coloured tent then you will overheat in warm or hot weather because it absorbs a lot more energy from the sun and heats up inside.

    Just to highlight the positives of the tunnel:
    I usually only bring my Hilly tunnel when I'm in conditions that warrant a pulk to carry the snow melting kitchen and weeks of sustenance required.
    Two reasons why I favor it: The setup. When I'm using a pulk, I will have my tunnel pre-poled, as in, the poles are already in the tent sleeves. All the pole joints, except the mid joint, are taped together with electrical tape. Once I'm ready to pitch, I connect the mid-joint, and now the tent is ready. This means there's minimal faffing about, so the mittens stays on, which is important. This allows me to quickly and easily set up my tunnel tent, even if I'm pitching solo in winds I can't stand up in, in as little as 10 minutes. I anchor it in the head wind, and let the wind "inflate" the tent for me. It's easier in high wind than no wind. I've not seen anyone pre-pole their tunnel tents on pulks outside Scandinavia/Greenland/Poles, but at least here here it's common. If I remember correctly, I think the type of tunnel tents used today were invented here in Scandinavia, specifically by (Norwegian) Helsport company in the 60s/70s. It's my favorite type tent for winter on Vidda (mountain plateau). Size of the tent doesn't alter the difficulty of set up. It's the same principle for Hilleberg Akto (1.5 kg) as it is for large expedition tents (Helsport Spitsbergen x-trem 4 (6 kg) with 5 m2). Since it's a pulk, weight is of almost no concern.
    Aside from ease of setup, another reason is the amount of space you can get is good. That's great if you're unlucky to be stranded in a week long blizzard far from civilization.
    Have a good one. :)

      Thanks very much for your comment and insight into how you set up your tent in adverse conditions. That’s quite unique compared to over here in New Zealand, however we very rarely use a pulk, we simply have the gear in our packs for trips up to 10 or so days. You will be able to carry a lot more gear though and cover greater distances with skis. Happy tenting. ⛺️😀⛺️

    Great video Barry, quick and effective. The one thing I'd say is I'm a great fan of assault style tents and reckon they can solve the dilemma of 'light or strong'? Though I do like to add a vestibule too, but at 1.8 kg without or 2.3 with its not a bad solution! Best wishes from wet windy Scotland, Andrew

      Thanks Andrew for watching my video. Glad you liked it. Yes, there’s plenty of options out there for sure. I must admit though, I do like a vestibule in my tents for all my gear. ⛺️😀👍🏼 Happy camping.

    What are your thoughts on the slingfin portal or crossbow 2?

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. All round, SlingFin are a very good USA provider of tents. The Portal looks similar to a MSR design, 3-season tent. The crossbow 2 looks like a good mid-strength 4-season tent. The inner has no mess, and the poles look good too, however the floor and outer fabric are only 20D thick which is ‘okay’ but not great. It’ll suffice most people though who want to experience camping in snow, but not necessarily in very strong wind or in a blizzard. ⛺️❄️🤣

    Hey Barry, does the red hue of the Soulo ever bother you? It seems to produce quite a tinge on the inside.

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sooty for the late reply! No the red colour has never bothered me. The yellow inner might help dull the brightness a bit.

    Hi, I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Vango helvellyn 200/300? I’m planning to buy it to hike the northern part of kungsleden where wind can be very strong. Thank you!

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. I’m not totally familiar with that tent, however the fabric seems to be of an average strength. In strong winds though, the main entrance end isn’t fully supported by a pole and could get knocked around a bit. I’d check out reviews online and compare that to the weather you’d expect to get where you’re heading to. It could be ideal for what you want. Have fun and all the best out there. ⛺😀👍🏼

    Can you suggest me a good 4 season tent for strong wind? Hilleberg Soulo is my first choice but is out of stock in Germany

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  ปีที่แล้ว

      There so many choices. Any of the Hille red or black labels tents are very good. The main thing is that all of the tent sides slip and allow wind to easily pass over them. You also need 2-3 or more strong poles and fabric that can handle strong wind. If pegged out right, most true 4-season tents will stand up to quite strong winds. Happy shopping.

    How do you rate the Minaret and Sololight Macpac tents?

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there Dieter. I have the Microlight and Olympus in the Macpac range, and really rate both of them very highly. The Minaret is good in all-weather, however due to the sharp angled end of the tent, it’s tough getting two full-sized adults in it comfortably. I think it perhaps better as a larger solo tent, and one for an adult and dog or adult and younger child. Still a great tent though.
      As the the Sololight, that can really punch above its weight. It’s only 1.2kg and yet I’ve seen it survive strong 80km gusts at Cameron Hut in South Canterbury. Although it’s not large, several people in the Tramping Club I belong to really like it and take it only many trips we go on through all seasons. All the best. 👍🏼
