    There’s something totally awesome about camping in winter. What’s your #1 tip for having fun?

    • @NotASheep100
      @NotASheep100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your video has the answer to having fun in the winter wild camping...
      The correct gear and knowing how to use it...
      Then snuggling up in the tent and listen to the weather do it's worst.
      Love it ....
      My problem is finding gear that is up to the job, in winter, that doesn't weigh a ton,. And cripple me carrying it.
      Oh.. and of course enough money to afford it.. as always..

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NotASheep100 haha. So true. As I always say; lightweight or strength, choose one. Oh and price, yes, quality winter gear costs more too and fills out your pack more too. its all part of the price of venturing into the winter wonderland. 😀

    For a lightweight solution to sleeping mat insolation take an extra emergency foil blanket and put it underneath the mat. Works super well and it doesn't take up much weight or space. Winter tramping is awesome!!!!

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, it is awesome! I would never have though that the foil blanket would make much difference. Good tip. 👍🏼

    Hi Barry,
    - Nice tip about placing water into a pot before adding snow for a quicker melt and boil.
    - The top US sleeping bag brands of Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends do not treat their down with water-repellent chemicals because they have not found any benefits for doing so.
    - I definitely download some entertainment onto my phone due to my insomnia...and long subway trips.
    Enjoy your winter!

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks you Sir. That’s really interesting about WM and FF not treating water treating their down. They are two top brands and obviously know what they’re doing. Very rarely do you get your bag wet, it’s just when you do, it’ll be good to have some added protection. Yes, I’m excited to see winter has arrived here. There’s plenty of snow on forming on the hills and mountains at the mo too.

    Hm, I immediately clicked, because I am also a huge winter camping fan. And I have to live outdoors year round, because my whole flat is occupied by the huge pile of winter camping gear, that leaves no space for me.
    But I imagined tips on how to melt drinking water with a frost proof fuel pump in - 40 celsius and below, for igloo- snow shelter and snow wall building for the tent, for ice fishing and mushing and how to avoid frost bite and polar bears...... For sure I expected heaps of snow.
    I guess: the definition of "winter" depends on the area you live in....
    This looks like mid summer in Scotland.
    You got nice shots! Keep up the good work.

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, although it gets cold and snowy in the mountains here in New Zealand, we don’t get the -40°. I did recently do a Snow Shelters video where we built igloos which was a fun trip. The weather was surprisingly ‘warm’ that day. It sounds like you have loads of great gear. Looks like it’s time for a bigger flat lol. All the best.

    My tip is to make sure the family is warm overnight. I failed on that one last weekend in a heavy frost overnight. Don’t think hubby and child 1 will come lightweight camping with me again for a loooong time. Child 2 though (who was warm) is already planning our next adventure.
    Where did you get the down booties from? I’ve half looked for them before and didn’t find any.
    Totally agree on the sleeping bag. Mine is a -30f which is totally overkill in the north of the north, but I’ve not had a cold night since getting it. Even when my bag froze to the inside on my tent last weekend.

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for tuning in. That’s a shame some of your family may have been put off winter camping. Maybe with slightly sunnier weather and warmer gear, they may be tempted again. i got my down booties from Macpac, however I know Bivouac sell Sea to Summit ones as well. Keep having fun out there. All the best. 😀

    Hi Barry. Firstly I’m very jealous you are entering winter in NZ - by far my favourite time for camping! Great content as always, all spot on. Definitely I would agree on making sure your sleeping bag and particularly your mat are rated higher than the temperature you are expecting. Nothing worse than being cold and miserable and if conditions really deteriorate unsafe. If you are having to wear your down coat for example in your bag to keep warm, then IMO you haven’t got your sleep system dialled in. And no amount of clothes will stop heat loss into the ground from an unsuitable mat. Cheers. Gary

      Thanks Gary. Yes, I’m excited about getting out this winter, it’s my best season too. 😀 Agree on your points regarding having the right kit. Winter is not the time to be trying to cut down on weight when it could cost you in comfort and staying safe. I look forward to sharing my winter adventures with you. All the best.

    One thing I’ve effectively used several times in winter camping is a SOL Escape (emergency) bivy…super light and you can put your sleeping bag in it or vice versa to boost the temperature if it’s unexpectedly cold. Great video!..

    Like your overlays Baz. My tip would be always have a set of day hiking clothes & base layers & a separate dry set just for nights (huts or tents) Sadly too many people trying to lighten their pack out and don’t take enough clothes. Oh a final tip would be to get a winter invite from Baz cos he’s got all the gear I can’t justify buying 😂

    • @wildmountainman1

      Haha! Sadly there’s only room for one bloke in my Hilleberg. Two though in my Olympus and yes, you’d be most welcome. I’m actually thinking of buying a 3P, 4-season tent. Stay tuned. And yes your tip re clothing is an important one. I really don’t believe there’s such a thing as lightweight when it comes to full winter overnight trips. More about rightweight than lightweight. Thanks Dave.

    Hi Barry, I think this is your best video to date.. and you have done a few good ones.... Really well presented and explained and the thought behind it shows in the content. FANTASTIC demonstration of what you are talking about continually throughout.. My top tips ... Get the strongest tent you are fit to carry for the conditions and environment expected, and keep yourself fit too.. Don't push equipment further than what it is designed for as it won't last as long or sooner or later you will be caught out by failure.. ATB Tom

    I'm heading off for my first alpine trip in the winter and was wondering what would be the best way to stop your water bottle from freezing at night and during the day? Should i buy an insulated drinkbottle?

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Connor. Great to hear you’re venturing out into winter camping.
      Your water bottle won’t freeze if it’s in your sleeping bag or is less likely too if it’s in an insulated sleeve. Naigene bottles are good as you can put hot water in them and then put them in your sleeping bag to warm you up. Put it in a sock or cloth though so it won’t burn you.

    As always a terrific overview of winter camping, nice!
    I've never fully understood the logic in wearing a down jacket when walking, even if it's filled with hydrodown. Other than being pretty non-breathable as a layer, the pack compresses the down on the back and shoulders - thus reducing its thermal efficiency. A synthetic-filled (eg primaloft or polartec alpha) jacket or mid-weight fleece holds more favour as the active garment and remain warm when damp. Leave the down jacket for camp. This remains my preferred system.
    However, if walking the river-flats in deep shadow with freezing permafrost on the ground, a down jacket is not a bad garment to have :-)

    • @wildmountainman1
      @wildmountainman1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. So true. I always keep my down wear for around camp. My primaloft jacket is a better option for sure. Sometimes it’s a matter of trial and error and keeping gear close on hand just in case you need to change for whatever reason. Thanks for your good ideas.
