Testing your sleeping system and clothing system for winter some where safe, like day walk or pitching your tent at home and sleeping out on super cold night.
    nice B roll

So true! Far better to test your gear in a controlled and safe situation before you really need it in the field.

Thanks Dave. I appreciate your comments. The scenery made it a bit easier to get some good footage. I’m currently doing a Mountain Film Making Course in Wanaka, so I’ll check my voice mail to see if Hollywood has called. 🤣

Glad for the synthetic clothing tips. I'm becoming 'allergic' to wool & down and am looking at synthetics. P.S. Amazing scenery, captured with amazing camera work.

I think you've got merino management issues ;) Synthetic dries too quickly at stops and gives immediate chills (not to mention the environmental issues with synthetics) Merino slow drying stops the chills - it remains mildly moist while worn. The best way to dry that merino layer is to put another merino layer under the wet set and pop a layer over the top. Then everything is dry in the morning.
I do like polypro gloves - almost indestructible and absorb little water. When it's cold I don't layer gloves as the (usually) wet, cold liners prevent the insulation working well in the big gloves.
    Each to their own huh?

Good feedback Bob. I certainly understand what you’re saying. One of the biggest challenges I face, (which I didn’t mention in the video) is that I only have to look at exercise and I start sweating, which is also why I wear shorts, even in snow. So even when it’s cold I’ll generally only wear a t-shirt and my rain jacket. So I find what I mention in the video works for me, however as you say, many people find what works best for them and stick with it. I admit though, it’s a learning curve. :)

Just gonna Chuck my two cence in here as well. I can relate a lot to Barry, lots of sweat, no matter how atrocious the weather.
New synthetics have some pretty cool technology and are a lot more environmentally than they used to be. Worth checking out the powerdry tech and how it works. Also macpac now does a semi synthetic semi merino t shirt so there's lots out there for people.
I very rarely have a problem with being to cold cause of my synthetic shirts. And if I am getting cold. I've found wet merino hasn't been a big helper in that (personally). If I set up camp and I'm starting to get cold. I'll Chuck my warm pants and spare undies (merino), on as well as a dry polarfleece and jacket. Then I do what barry does and my shirt dries overnight.

@@DakkaDakkaDakkaWaagh great points, thank you. 👍🏼 I do have one of the Macpac semi-merino tops. I do like it, however, I still find it isn’t the easiest to dry when it’s wet. The struggle is real. Lol.

@@wildmountainman1 I feel that. I turn into a sweaty rat within 30 seconds of uphill walking. I definitely like my macpac superlite t shirt. Drys super fast. Breathes really well when walking and shorts team haha
