Rain Harvest First Flush Filter Inspection & Clean.
We are looking at the First Flush Filter to look at the debris that is being caught in the system. It's amazing to see the difference of particle matter that is being trapped. On the northern side where we have been working installing the solar panels we notice mud and silt. On the western side there more insects and seeds which surely would have come from bird droppings. Certainly and interesting mix. The first flush is certainly working and keeping the drinking water clean.

Keyline Cuts - Capturing Rainwater For Soil Fertility.
มุมมอง 82621 วันที่ผ่านมา
We have added extra key line cuts to help hydrate the soils on one of our gentle slopes on the farm. After seeing the success of the original key line cuts the time had come to add extras. The spans between these cuts are around 10 - 15 Mts ensuring we capture every millimetre of rainfall and concentrate on smaller areas to hydrate and promote soil fertility and re vegetation.
Victron Solar System Install - Part 2 Solar Panel Installation.
มุมมอง 275หลายเดือนก่อน
The solar panels are being installed onto the rails (Racking). 18 panels totalling 6300 kw. 2 solar strings each of 3150 kw wired in series will feed the MPPT unit. The wiring will have to wait for the electrician as I'm only the trades assistant with this install completing all the manual labour. With conduit to run and the wall mounting of the Victron system we will be having power shortly.
Keyline and Natural Sequence Farming - 1 Year On - The Results.
มุมมอง 891หลายเดือนก่อน
One year on from natural sequence and keyline farming practices, and results are in. The main point of interest is that our ground cover is very very close to 100%. Even if we haven't had rain in 8 - 10 weeks we some patches of green grass and we can see where the water seeps are. Something to think about in the future.

Rain Harvest & First flush Roof Cleaning.
มุมมอง 949หลายเดือนก่อน
Using the large square meterage of the machinery shed roof and the lack of rain over the past months, time has come to start harvesting as much water as when can. With the installation of the first 25,000litre rain water tank we are on the way to start mass collection. The thought of roof cleaning was proposed and hence "First Flush" was introduced. This system was easy to install on the harves...
Farm Coolroom Build - Stage 1. Refrigerated Panels.
มุมมอง 4202 หลายเดือนก่อน
Our Coolroom dreams are coming true, after struggling with feast or famine from our vegetable harvests we have decided on our Coolroom. The frame size is 2400 x 2400 x 2400 (13.8 mts3). This will keep our produce cool and prevent from going to waste. This is only stage 1 with the frame as we will need to look into the cooling, drainage, lighting, power source, air purge pressure and shelving. B...
Green Manure Season Change With Chickens.
มุมมอง 4142 หลายเดือนก่อน
Our green manure needs to broken down and returned back into the soil. Using the chickens to do this is just fantastic, they break down the stems, eat the bugs and while scratching around return it to the soil. We do loose some percentage of foliage as they love the green leaves. But who counting. The seasons have change and are preparing another vegetable bay for summer with the seeding of our...
Garlic Season Planting.
มุมมอง 3852 หลายเดือนก่อน
With the failure of our external garden bed for the garlic, we have to dedicate one of the vegetable garden bays to the garlic for the next 8 months. WE have decided to raise the beds to avoid garlic stem damage and to capture as much rain as possible and allow to soak into the beds. These beds will also help with the weeding with the access paths/ drifts. However this has caused an issue with ...
Vegetable Garden Bed Fail.
มุมมอง 4532 หลายเดือนก่อน
Wanting to expand our vegetable gardens for root crops, we decided to charge ahead with a rotary hoe and clear the pasture grass. After clearing the grass it was very clear that the soil we thought we had was nothing but dirt. Making a clear decision this will be a project on developing proper soil alive with microbes and health. The new venture of expanding our growing space for root vegetable...
Swale Season Maintenance - Ready for Winter Rain Harvest.
มุมมอง 6253 หลายเดือนก่อน
Summer is behind us and the cool morning of Autumn have arrived. The swales need maintenance in readiness for the water catchment season of winter and spring. A few surprises were found including tree saplings of oak, willows and fruit trees. The eco system has really started with the small yabbies, frogs and abundant bird life.
Fence Line Weaning - Totally Stress Free.
มุมมอง 8313 หลายเดือนก่อน
Using the fence line weaning method is one of the most stress free weaning process out there. Allowing the cows and their calves to have the ability to touch noses and reassure each other is just fantastic. By using the fence line method all you are doing is removing the access to the udder. This both allows independence and conditioning for the cows leading up to the new calving season. This a...

Gday- looks great well done -thanks for the inspiration & I can see this in my future- how may blue flanos do you own lol- 😉 my wife thinks my collection of red Flanos is too big.
Gday- well done bud- simple and easy to follow instructions and all while sporting a stylish blue Flano 😉 -I think the pipe bender, it would be easier if used by hanging on a wall and pulling the pipe down ways,.
Hello! I just watched your video on cuttings from the silk tree, I'm also trying to learn how to do this! I looked for a follow up video but didn't see one, how did they do?!
Any update video on what you did with this spring?
Is that OK.. to use those root hormone liqid on rooted dying plants or only for propagating plant cuttings.
I'd probably fence it off, the cows will ruin it.
So easy to do. There's no excuse now 🙂
'Water for every farm' by P A Yeoman should be essential reading, it set the foundations for water management, holding/using water high in the catchment, etc. for NSF to follow.
Been doing this in Ireland for a few years. Works brilliant. They get big.
Tank set ups are so much better these days I can remember dad pulling out dead animals out of our old tanks when we were kids love seeing what your up to. Thanks wendy
What did he say 😂
I'd love to see some drone footage of the area that's been deep-ripped; I'm sure there will be some nice green strips. What are your thoughts on feeding out along the high points of the paddock? In view of the nutrients getting washed down the slope and being trapped in the key cuts, just a thought. I enjoy all that you put up. Cheers.
Awesome job. We're in Victoria too...could do with some more rain. We're regenerating our land to wetlands, I've found your videos very helpful. Cheers
Thanks, this vid answered al ot of my questions regarding the cut itself.
nice video, my question is about the cuts in terms of depth and width as well as the way the edges of the cut should be eg, square, round or splayed.
Great to see it working so well for you. You may have to change the angle of the 90-degree pieces over your tank inlet once you get some rain (more than willing to send some of what we have been getting lately) coming off the roof. By the look of the angles from the gutter down, you will have a fair bit of pressure coming out and the water missing your tank altogether unless you have those 90-degree pieces pointing directly down into your tank.
So where is the removing blackberries part,? Clickbait.
G'Day mate, it all looks great to these tired old eyes. Just to get off topic for a second, you were talking about fixing the door on your "cool-room" a couple of posts ago. I came across the following video by accident and immediately thought of you. I hope that it helps... th-cam.com/video/DXcnbdHcrps/w-d-xo.html
Hey Les, Thanks for the thought. I took your suggestion and ordered and sheet of perspex 9mm thick. I've used this as the second sheet to act as a thermal barrier. I'll post something more on the coolroom when i install the refrigerant system. Thanks heaps.
Nice
Lomandra longifolia, great riparian zone sedge/bush that gets deep roots and stops erosion
Hey! Loved the video. How did the germination go after the trial?
Hey David, the germination was good. Some areas germinated really quickly and others took their time. I was in this paddock today and was surprised that the seeds i thought i lost where obviously waiting for better conditions. I would say that there would be 95% strike rate so far. I was mulching some old blackberry canes and underneath were all these bright green blades of grass all in rows.
great stuff, cant wait to see the next update
Ever thought of adding a few extra swales higher up?
Hi Rob, We thought about adding extra swales however its just more about the ground for cattle. We like to keep the swales fenced, if the cattle are with the swales they are very prone to damage. Cheers
Any chance of getting some Drone Video for reference to compare in 4months, 8 months and so on. It's all in context isn't it - up here near Bundaberg at this time year we would call 25mm rain and be glad to get it, whereas in the Summer we would'nt count it as being worthwhile as it would have dried away by the end of the next day. What you are doing is investing in the future and increasing the "effective" rainfall, if effect storing the rain event underground. In the past it would have all run off the property and be on its way - I keep comming across the paradigm of it being 7 years to achieve hydration and I don't know where this comes from as what the soil type under our feet must have some bearing on this magical figure of 7 years. I have been pushing this on our block for some years and wish I had taken more images for future reference/comparison. I have seen Alan Savoury say the same thing in his videos. In videos from Malloone Creek where they have been at it for longer time spans, they say that the creek is Dry at the top of the properties but there is permanant water running out from the bottom.
Hi Terry, the figures that cross my desk are 5 - 7 years which is spot on. I'll look into a drone camera - that makes heaps of sense. The other half won't be happy - more toys. Cheers
Good job on the Keyline. I was lucky & found a 3 tyne yoemans in a clearance sale that no one knew what it was. Have seen some great improvement after one year. Have you run your line on contour or slightly off to direct water to ridges. Would lend you the plow if we lived closer. Hope you get some rain this week. 🍻
Hey There, These cuts are just on contour. We have received some rain since making the video and they worked a treat. I've been following your channel and you to are making great progress. Thanks for the offer to use the yeoman. It all takes time, make sure you make time to enjoy the the efforts. Take care. Cheers
I'm about to attempt propagating some Persian Silk too... Can you give us an update? Which method worked best and how many rooted? 😊
Hi Karren, I had no success. The Persian silk and oregano have turned out to be my nemesis. So many attempts and just nothing. If you have any luck can you please let me know. Thanks in advance. Cheers
@FatCowFarmTatong sorry to hear that, but I really appreciate the update. Will swing by in a few weeks to let you know how it turns out for me although the only major difference, other than climate, is that I've covered my pots with freezer bags for extra humidity.
You may want to go with a 120 mm pipe it will give even more volume with not much deference in cost and I always say bigger is better it may also give you the extra wattage you may need for the electrical resistance you have yet to consider
What timber did you use for the rails and rafters?
Hi Nathan, this is treated pine 90 x 45 MPG10. Available at any hardware store. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing the nuances of your system.
No problems Raj, thanks for watching.
Looks great! The little bridge might be slowing down the water and collecting debris, don't you think? Hard to tell from the video.
Hey Max, the clearance under the bridge is fine, the issue I have is aquatic plant growth clogging the swale. Its a first world problem I know however a good sign for the swale health. Cheers
I have similar setup but with two large vegetable gardens and chicken coop with run in the middle. One year chickens are in one garden, and in the second are vegetables and next year I rotate them.
Nice work, as will give you the flexibility to expand if needed.
Congratulations, it’s awesome you’re doing this. Audacity is a good open source program to pull out the wind noise, I didn’t find it to bad
Fascinating sound of the wind there mate. Might want to fix that in "post processing"... Love your work though. Been working on this at my place for a few years. Great to see the results. Thanks for sharing it with me/us! BTW, have you looked at Holistically Managed Grazing? Great way to regen grasslands!
Hey James, the wind was full on sorry my little phone was certainly struggling. I've look at Holistic management and are working towards it. We only have a small heard which is growing every year. Thanks for your words of encouragement. Cheers
Interesting video! Do you keep a record of where you place any hay bales to feed stock? The green patches that you discussed may also be a combination of the keyline rip as well as additional ground cover/mulch. We saw big changes around where the cattle had been fed hay and the increased ground cover and nutrient provided by the hay and animal waste. That said, there certainly seems to be an effect from the rips you’ve put in. I wonder how things would look if you’ve had the chance to use an implement with multiple tynes/shanks.
So no concerns re farm stock and injuries? im not sure how deep the keylines are.
The single ripper I used cuts 300mm and maybe 50mm across. (single ripper pipe layer). The cut quickly closes in on itself.
What’re your stocking rates? I’d be curious to know if that was contributing to bare soils. Chatted to people that had issues with large numbers of Roos causing overgrazing
They say it takes 7 years to acheived hydration with Springs starting emerge at the lower parts of the slopes - I've never understood that as the underlying structure of the topopgraphy must affect how the water moves underground. I think that you will start to see the real changes from late spring with moisture and sunlight, but you are on the right track.
Thanks for updating!!
I put captions on and read what was said. Great video. Like what you are doing. How many acres do you have??
Great work mate. Awesome outcomes. Thanks for sharing. Still need to connect re your garden structure.
Please do something about the wind hitting the microphone. Can't hear what you are saying
Funny but I like the sound of the wind, added to the reality of the situation with the blowing of the reeds and trees.
Sorry about all that wind, I was on my own running around and was a fairly full on day windy wise.
If you got large land area; try not to put solar panels on the building roof because you need to clean those panels around 3~5 months to maintain its efficiency.
Hi Rimzalla, i understand about the cleaning of panels on the roof may be dangerous, however we have future plans for the area around the shed. This is out only option removing forward. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers
Victron chargers fail, and they made sure you cant repair them...
You are better than I am mate. No bloody way would you get me up on that roof ... Heights and Les don't mix LOL
Thank you very much.
Love what you do, what you have achieved and thoroughly enjoy and appreciate your content.
Thanks James, I'm glad your enjoying the videos. Cheers
I was nder the impression that Calama has to be grafted
The only thing I can think about crafting is the root stock strength. In Australia we call fruit grown from seed (bush plants). Some say they take longer to fruit by about a year. This doesn't worry us but in saying that our first olives have fruit, although very juvenile they are way to small to bear any fruit and we pick them off to give more energy in growing rather than fruiting. Cheers
I am thinking about doing a patio behind my house. the little electric mixers just won't cut it. PTO driven mixer probably has the capacity to make the job feasible. Thanks for showing one of these in action. They're pretty reasonably priced. That'd cut the backbreaking labor down to a bearable amount!
Hey Kevin, making the work load easier is what it's all about. Good luck. Cheers
I’m sure you have plenty to do but I’m really fascinated with the principles in the key line system and am hoping for an update video showing the current results. Thanks
Hi there, we have just received our first rain in months. I'll walk the paddocks and post something for you. Cheers
Good deal. Is it NZ? Trying to er.. propagate them here in Brooklyn NY
Hi there, we are in Australia (Victoria High Country 700metres above sea level) below freezing in winter and 40 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Good luck with the propagation in the big apple. Once you start harvesting the olives down the track propose a name change to the Big Olive. Good luck.
