Pasture Dynamics - Can Cows Become Chickens?

  • As I start to watch the pastures over the seasons, I'm understanding that the work load in front of me is massive. Can cows become chickens - the chickens work well in the chicken coop which is the testing ground for our pastures. I need to change the way I think and use the cows as chickens in the pastures. Adding diversity of species, green manure cover crops, and the cows to break it down and return it to the soil. The question is has this been done and or can it be done. It works in my mind and on paper but will it work in reality.

You’re awesome. I am doing the same sort of thing at my house and just winging it with growing foods and having chooks. But all I want to do is regenerate soil and nature in my house block. I want to have a fish pond to bring my wildlife like insects and lizards

Hey Billy, the key is water reeds. We've planted truck loads about 4 years ago and the amount of wild life coming back is amazing. Constantly seeing new birds, frogs etc. Good luck and thanks for a great words. Chers

A couple of months ago I watched a video from the USA where, after the cows had been through the paddock that was used for rotational grazing, he hopped on the tractor and spread the cow pats all over the area. The thinking being, was that if you just leave the manure where it was deposited, then you are only fertilising a small area within the paddock. By spreading it across the area you are adding the biomass to the whole paddock. I will be interested to see the results of your seeding experiment and see how well it works. But I can understand your reasoning. Seed in the paddock has a chance of a result while seed stored in the shed only feeds the mice....

Hey Les, thanks for the feedback. I've really been thinking about it and i really should have seeded legumes first and then let the cows in to eat and crush it. Then plant the pasture seeds. This is exactly what i do in the chicken coop and works a treat for the vegetables. The rabbit hole has opened but where does it stop. Thanks agin i appreciate your thoughts. stay safe
