  • We have prepared the vegetable garden bay and are testing sunflower cover crops for summer. The chickens have cleaned up all the old greens, we have aerated the soils and have sown last years saved and dried sunflower seeds.
With the volume we get this year I'm hoping we'll have enough to sow in the paddocks.

I'm in Central NSW and planting sunflowers as well. Using the seeds from the Scratch Mix I buy for the chickens. I'm hoping to plant around 100 seedlings in waves, that way I can have plenty of chicken food.

Hey Andrew, that's what i'm talking about. Planting out in pastures for feed. Chickens, cows, goats & sheep. Everyone deserves a treat. Nice one.

I used the sunflower seeds sold in bulk at the livestock supplies. grey stripe or black varieties.

Hey Christine, I've noticed the chickens don't eat the grey striped seeds from a bird mix. The black varieties is what we sourced, not only for planting but a chicken treat as well. Thanks for watching and take care. Cheers

I can see from the next bay along that you had a mixed diverse cover crop in there, was there a particular reason for this bay being ONLY sunflowers. Just for fun I bought some sunflowers in other colours than yellow and put them in this last winter, really got some attention. Most people don't know that sunflowers come in other colours than yellow. Really envious of you having rain 3 weeks ago, it's been months up here!!!

Hey Terry, no particular reason for running a mono culture crop. I've heard good things about sunflowers as a cover crop and wanted to see if its all cracked up to be. As the crop becomes tall I may throw a summer green manure crop under neath the stalks for the chickens to clean up as a treat for them and for the soils.

G'day mate from the East Coast of Australia, how many chooks are you currently running in your Coop, to get such productive success 🐔

Hey Rick, we use 10 chickens in our coop. We normally pick up rescue chickens which need time to learn to be chickens again. Its more about their scratching and manure that we are needing not so much about the eggs. With 10 rescue chickens they typically lay 1 egg every 2 days as they have past their production peak. Hope this helps. cheers
