Last Sale (Sail) of Bootstrap. When it's time to be done sailing, it's time.
Jim reluctantly realizes that it is time to sell his little Catalina 22, Bootstrap.
My sailing buddy could no longer sail, and it didn't take a lot of imagination to realize that I was going to end up in the water with some new sailors that might not be able to rescue me. I am walking away with only positive experiences and a love of sailing. It has been my goal to help new sailors get started. What's next? Maybe a power boat?

Basic Boom Tent Build for Catalina 22 Sailboat - Jim's Little Boat
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Using Sunbrella canvas, Jim makes an 80 square foot boom tent for his small Catalina 22 sailboat. Here are some ideas you can use even though Jim is a little light on sewing skill. Now that I have finished the boom tent, I would change the dimensions a bit. I would go for a final finished size of 118 inches long and 88 inches wide. I would skip the taper and just make it a rectangular tarp. Thi...

      Take a zip tie and put a 180 degree bend in it. Slip it in on one side and pull it up. Then the tie will be on both sides of the ball. Hold it while you push the axle out. Then just lift it out. OR. You can just remove the axle and let it fall to the ground.

    I'm not very experienced at reefing, probably done it twice in my life, but I don't understand why friction points matter. As long as you keep the boat pointed into the wind the luff sail shouldn't be difficult to reef.

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the wind is blowing even a little bit all that extra friction makes it really difficult to reef. Even though the boat is headed into the wind, the main will flog a bit. When I broke the system down into two parts, I could reef while we continued sailing, there was usually no need to go head to wind.

I'm wondering how far aft on the boom I should install the first turning block for reef #1 (I'll worry about installing reef lines for second reef later). Should I mount the turning block slightly aft of where reef clew will reach the boom, or right in line with where the first reef clew will meet boom? I do have a 3:1 outhaul already. In other words, is the placement of the aft turning block critical? Thanks. I enjoy your tutorials.

    i haven't single handed anything but a dinghy, but i have crewed on boats up to 35 ft, i spent a month crewing an Irwin 32 around lake Erie. i have kayaked source to sea down the Mississippi for whatever that is worth.. I've been looking into getting a boat for a few years now, i would like to set sail and explore the inland waterways in the eastern US. I'm looking for boat ideas, I've thought about everything from a Catalina 22 to a Hobie 16. I think my ideal boat was a windrider 17 trimaran. or a 22ft monohull ... guess im looking for input. the 2 old guys who taught me to sail both said i shouldn't spend allot on my first boat and i agree, i assume any money i put into a first boat is as good as burnt . originally had a 6k boat budget but they told me to cut that in half or less, said a first boat should be 2k tops but i have no idea, i have to travel a long ways to even see water... i'd be buying a boat and launching on this adventure in the same week.

    Question Jim I like your videos of the Bootstrap i was looking at getting a Catalina 22 and you have given me the confidence to be able to get a bit older one and it will be fine. with that do you have a video or any advice on one that is reported to have soft spots One is the rear part of the cockpit floor. The other is the foredeck area between the forward hatch and the bow should i avoid or would it be a good winter project to get it fixed. any advise would be appreciated and taken with the utmost respect for your knowledge of these boats.

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi John. I spent over $14,000 on Bootstrap and ended up selling her for just $5800. So basically they are giving these boats away. If you really want a project boat it should cost very little money. I would only pay $2000 for a boat with a good trailer and a serviceable engine if it needs work. Bootstrap was not the prettiest boat, but every inch of her was sound and she only cost me $4000. I had to look at 5 or 6 boats, but well found boats are out there. You might want to think Great Lakes. Those boats are only in fresh water six month per year. If you found a great boat for 3 or 4 K, it would be worth the drive home. So my advice: find a good boat and spend your time sailing. jim

My husband is already putting some of your tips into action and refers to your channel often. Thank you for sharing. And I hope some new project or hobby gives you as much joy as you have shared in the sailing community. Our teen son loves to sail and to tinker, and we will be putting our boat to great use just as Bootstrap will be doing with her new owners. Wishing you the very best!

    Jim, you certainly helped fill a void for me, 75 yrs old and never set foot on a sailboat, but have been wanting to for several years; not a lot of opportunity in Yakima, but watching your story unfold was next best. Thanks ... thanks too for your service - mine was 66-70 but got stuck in Germany. All the best ... kinda wished we'd met & had a beer ... maybe next time I visit my son on Anderson Island ... Cheers.

      If you are ever south of Seattle and North of Portland, let me know. I will buy the 1st round.

    You've been my absolute favorite channel / site. A joy to follow, and dead on advice. I hope you can continue sailing, at least on other people's boats, and continue to post.

      Thanks, I was thinking about getting in touch with Earl. He was talking about applying a wrap to the hull.

    Jim- I am forever grateful for the time and effort you put into your videos. You have a passion for teaching and a easy going attitude. When my C22 popped off my truck and started running town the boat ramp a couple weeks ago and rolled back into the water (no damage no injuries). I thought- Jim never said anything about this. Then I realized- Jim’s boat stays in the water most of the time.

      It is somewhat expensive to moor the boat in the summer, but I use it two or three times a week. I would not use it often if I had to launch. Hat off to the trailer sailors who do it weekly. Where I live, you can get a good deal on moorage if you use the summer special. Pay up front for six months in cash and they give you a discount of two free months.

    Can you buy a motorboat? Not the same but keeps you out there!

    Jim, It's been a great pleasure to get to know you a little bit through your videos. Thanks for all the effort you've put into this over the years. May the sun shine on your face and the wind be on a starboard lift for the next part of you journey.

    Thanks for all of your content, Jim...I made the same decision to give up flying airplanes a while back for various reasons, so I can relate. Your videos convinced me to buy a 50 year old C22 that has been well cared for. Serenity ("and if the wind is right you can sail away, and find serenity") is slipped at our local lake and I've been sharing afternoon sails with all of my family and friends. All the best on your next endeavor(s).
