  • Jim makes a new cover for the winch of a Catalina 22. He shares some methods to make the bevel cuts and rout out the relief on the back side of the cover. CORRECTION: The complement of 65 is 25 BUT the correct angle for the bevel is 35 degrees. Thank you Jampa for pointing out my error.
Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

I have to say, your channel is becoming my favorite thing ever. It combines two great topics- woodworking and sailing. Keep it up!

Thanks, Karl. I make the video so there will be an archive for people who want to work on their own boats.

    I bought a Catalina 22 about a year ago.
It has a crack about 12" back from the front of the cockpit floor. About 10" from the drains.
I looked underneath and it has plywood showing underneath no cracks in it.
I was think I would cut a waterproof access door where the crack is 17-1/2"× 12" this tould hide the crack and give some access to that area.
    What do you think?

Some folks have suggested that idea. People more knowledgeable than I say it is a bad idea. It takes away structure that is important for the strength of the hull and creates a water entry point you don't need. You can contact Kevin Patton on the Facebook site. He replaced his whole floor. He would have a better take on the floor structure.

I think the compliment of 65 is 25. Did you use 35?

Jampa--dude--you are correct. I did use 35 degrees. Good thing I went with the measurement taken from the workpiece.

I just added the correction to the description and gave you credit. Thanks for your keen attention to detail.

I am curious. Have you ever sailed a Mac 26D or 26S and if so how whould you compare it to a Cat 22 or 25?

@@jampasritalon4180 The only boats I have ever sailed are a 420, a C-Lark, a Tanzer 16, a San Juan 21, a Catalina 22, a Yankee 30 and a Catalina 30 and a couple of other day sailers of less than 22 feet. Oh--and I held the tiller of a Serendipity 43 for maybe half an hour. Oh, and I sailed on a San Juan 24, but never got to steer.
