  • Jim replaces the line on the tiller minder and explains why he prefers the "Tiller Controller" from Catalina Direct.
    As it turns out, the line can be repaired--the tech help desk at Catalina Direct did not mention this. It is a hassle, but the end caps are glued in with a tiny drop of glue. If you can get the caps out, you can attach new line and re-install the caps with another drop of glue. Thanks to Shawn Wheaton who shared the information.
    Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

    The perfect video to watch while sitting on my newly refit 1981 Catalina 22. Thanks for all these videos, they’ve had a great impact on my refit!

      Thanks. The next one is where I made some simple mistakes, but got home safe anyway.

    Tanks for the videos Jim, always enjoy them. - the design of your tamer will inherently always wear the lines. They will always rub the pad eyes and eventually wear. I don't know if it would be feasible to change them out with small books or if that is actually a needed tension point.
    Good luck! always. Looking forward to the next video 👍

      Yeah, I accept that the design will result in wear. It works well so I will just lubricate with a little Sailcoat now and then and replace as needed. I now know how to repair it, but when this one goes, I will probably just buy the replacement.

    Enjoy your videos. I sail a Newport Venture 23, different rig but similar in size and similar challenges. It is great to see how you problem solve, and keep going. Fair Winds

      Thanks. Turns out the thing can be repaired. I am going to add a comment in the intro. But, I probably would have just purchased a new one any way.

      @@jimslittleboat4388 Do you use this setup to hold the boat into the wind when you are raising and lowering the sails single-handed in a breeze?
      This is the one problem I have never found a satisfactory solution for on my VN 23. Any breeze over about 8mph makes raising and lowering the sails a challenge in that the boat wants to turn with the wind.
      Interested in how you addressed this on your Catalina 22.

      @@huntsail3727 Yes, the friction of the tiller stay holds the boat into the wind nicely. I go ahead and raise the main sheeted down tight. Then I raise the jib with the sheets loose. Wind on a tight main is not so much of a problem as wind on a tight jib.

    Hi Jim, I just installed mine - same unit from Catalina Direct. It works fine but I don't understand how the adjustment beads work. Any tips?

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  ปีที่แล้ว

      Slip the beads on and ten tie a knot in the end of each line. Normally you will just use the knots to tension the spring, but when you want a little more tension, put a bead next to the knot.
