Last Sale (Sail) of Bootstrap. When it's time to be done sailing, it's time.

  • Jim reluctantly realizes that it is time to sell his little Catalina 22, Bootstrap.
    My sailing buddy could no longer sail, and it didn't take a lot of imagination to realize that I was going to end up in the water with some new sailors that might not be able to rescue me. I am walking away with only positive experiences and a love of sailing. It has been my goal to help new sailors get started. What's next? Maybe a power boat?

    Oh, Jim, I am sorry this is your last video! We have learned a lot from your videos, as we looked for a boat of our own. And now we are the new owners of an '81 C22! My husband is already putting some of your tips into action and refers to your channel often. Thank you for sharing. And I hope some new project or hobby gives you as much joy as you have shared in the sailing community. Our teen son loves to sail and to tinker, and we will be putting our boat to great use just as Bootstrap will be doing with her new owners. Wishing you the very best!

    That old saying about the best days of owning a boat being the first and last is absolute nonsense. It's all the days in between where you get to experience the freedom and joy of gliding silently across the water. It's waking up on the boat in some remote place with the only thoughts in your head being what's the wind gonna do today, what sails will I use, wonder if I'll catch any fish today? It's drifting off to sleep dreaming about your next adventure or boat project rather than worrying about whatever crisis the news has for sale.
    You can spot those who have never truly experienced these things by the number of worn out old sayings they have at the ready to discourage others from making the attempt.
    Having said that, The one about a boat being a hole in the water you throw money into is unfortunately true🙄
    I learned a lot from you Jim and you've been a big inspiration to me and many others. Thank you for that.
    Whatever you get into from here forward, May the wind be always in your favor.

      That is exactly it. My favorite video is a few seconds of Tony and I going to windward in puffy air, keeping the boat flat, max speed and gaining to windward on every puff. It takes a pretty experience sailor to appreciate what was going on there. Tony had a stroke and probably can't sail again, and darn-it I just aged out. But I have those memories and little snippet of video. Well worth the $13000 + I lost in money. Have a great season. jim

    Thanks for all of your content, Jim...I made the same decision to give up flying airplanes a while back for various reasons, so I can relate. Your videos convinced me to buy a 50 year old C22 that has been well cared for. Serenity ("and if the wind is right you can sail away, and find serenity") is slipped at our local lake and I've been sharing afternoon sails with all of my family and friends. All the best on your next endeavor(s).

      Thank you. My goal was to provide some help to first-time sailors. I remain in reasonably good health as we are raising some young grandchildren. I will be 77 next month. I would still be sailing, but my sailing buddy of 16 years had a pretty major stroke and I was having some minor balance issues. If Tony were able, we would probably have sailed a few more years. I just didn't want my last video to be about me almost dying from hypothermia. :)

    Jim- I am forever grateful for the time and effort you put into your videos. You have a passion for teaching and a easy going attitude. When my C22 popped off my truck and started running town the boat ramp a couple weeks ago and rolled back into the water (no damage no injuries). I thought- Jim never said anything about this. Then I realized- Jim’s boat stays in the water most of the time.

      It is somewhat expensive to moor the boat in the summer, but I use it two or three times a week. I would not use it often if I had to launch. Hat off to the trailer sailors who do it weekly. Where I live, you can get a good deal on moorage if you use the summer special. Pay up front for six months in cash and they give you a discount of two free months.

    Jim, My wife and I started as first time sailors in 2021. Your posts were instrumental in convincing us to begin. Although we didn’t follow all your advise, we ended up buying a 1982 Cape Dory 22, we watched each and every one of your videos. In fact I’ll be servicing my Tohatsu Sailpro and using your video as a guide. Thanks for letting everyone know you’re okay. We could only imagine what happened to you. So thank you on many different levels and we both wish you well going forward. As one door closes another opens and you can’t keep a good man down!

    Jim, you certainly helped fill a void for me, 75 yrs old and never set foot on a sailboat, but have been wanting to for several years; not a lot of opportunity in Yakima, but watching your story unfold was next best. Thanks ... thanks too for your service - mine was 66-70 but got stuck in Germany. All the best ... kinda wished we'd met & had a beer ... maybe next time I visit my son on Anderson Island ... Cheers.

    Jim, I was sorry to see you leave when you did. Partly because of your videos I went out and bought a 1986 Catalina 22 a month ago that needs a little work. I am not sure you still follow this channel anymore, but the one thing that I could not find on your videos was how you had rigged an out-haul on the boom. Was wondering if you had any videos or pictures that might help me reconfigure/rig this on my boat? Miss seeing your information.

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I just did the most simple factory rig. A turning block on the end of the boom and a cleat a bit farther forward on the boom. Unless you are racing, that is usually plenty.

    Question Jim I like your videos of the Bootstrap i was looking at getting a Catalina 22 and you have given me the confidence to be able to get a bit older one and it will be fine. with that do you have a video or any advice on one that is reported to have soft spots One is the rear part of the cockpit floor. The other is the foredeck area between the forward hatch and the bow should i avoid or would it be a good winter project to get it fixed. any advise would be appreciated and taken with the utmost respect for your knowledge of these boats.

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi John. I spent over $14,000 on Bootstrap and ended up selling her for just $5800. So basically they are giving these boats away. If you really want a project boat it should cost very little money. I would only pay $2000 for a boat with a good trailer and a serviceable engine if it needs work. Bootstrap was not the prettiest boat, but every inch of her was sound and she only cost me $4000. I had to look at 5 or 6 boats, but well found boats are out there. You might want to think Great Lakes. Those boats are only in fresh water six month per year. If you found a great boat for 3 or 4 K, it would be worth the drive home. So my advice: find a good boat and spend your time sailing. jim

    Hey Jim, I bought a 1986 Catalina 22 back in Sept 2020. (mainly because of your videos) I drove 750 miles Tennessee to Texas to pick her up. I am 64 years old and hope to spend my retirement years sailing on local lakes. I am interested in purchasing a carport like you kept Bootstrap in, what size is it?
