  • Jim takes a look back and evaluates some recent projects on his Catalina 22 sailboat. The projects make any small boat easier to sail.
    Mission: Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 60 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

    A simple bungee around the halyard to the stays to pull it off the mast to prevent clanging halyards! I always learn something new from your videos, thanks for making them!

    Looks good Jim. Ride over to Walmart and grab a cheap automotive sunshade, the chrome looking bubbly thing that you put in the front window of your car. Cut it to about a quarter inch too big for each one of your windows and just slap them in there when you’re leaving the boat. I made them for all the windows in our boat and they’re super easy and fast and they stay in there and keep the sun and the heat out when we’re not there. If u don’t have curtains, They double as privacy shades at night.

    I get hit really hard with allergies. My plan is to get a C-22, clean it up bilge and all, and get an ionic breeze for the thing.

      Just getting 300 yards off shore will help with your allergies. Good luck. Shop hard. There plenty of good boats out there.

      @@jimslittleboat4388 Thanks for getting back to me.
      'm no stranger to the ocean so I get how that works, and what a difference a few hours on the water can make, especially salt water. I live an hour from the shore, but the area where I live is home, and it also happens to be ripe with job opportunities in my field. After a couple years I'm planning to get to the Caribbean, get my sea time, and Captain's license and start chartering. Aw heck.Oncoukd use a first mate. Ya coming?

    Move the Simrad down below on a simple wooden hinged bracket, so when folded rearward it sits in the companion way. In bright sunlight close the sliding hatch cover. 👍

    You could consider selling the pattern for your crib board cover that works so well. I would purchase it!

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never made what you would call a regular pattern. I just kind of made a wooden copy of the end of the hatch weather board about 2 1/2 inches thick and just kind of drew the rest directly on the cloth. If you live near Olympia, WA, I can give you the copy of the hatch weather board.

      I could do that--but there will be hundreds of people who will tell me I am wrong--and they won't be nice about it. :)

    Hey Jim! Rainy week in Charleston means no sailing for us, but a great time to catch up on Jim's Little Boat! Know what you mean about the chart plotter, when we zoom in to get the detail we want, it really doesn't show enough of what's ahead. We have a hand held Garmin78SC, that the Captain has to hold pretty close to his face to see what he wants to see. The 6 inch, really, is just good to read the depth. Thanks for another great video!

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Liz--Ah the chart plotter. Well partly, I guess my expectations were not realistic. I should have gone with the bigger screen I guess. Frankly, right now I prefer my phone or a paper chart for position finding. However. On the up side, I got the depth sounder working through the hull. I placed the transducer near the bow storage locker. I like the speedometer. Now I have two depth sounders and two speedometers. I like the battery monitor and compass. I don't really care about the tracking, but it is kind of interesting. The problem with using the phone is the gps function sucks down the battery pretty quickly--and I have dropped three phones over board in five years--very expensive. I wish they had reduced the size of the compass on the chart display and made the chart bigger. So all in all $600 an okay deal and certainly cheaper than three phones. I went back the other day and looked at you overnight accommodation video as I was preparing for an overnighter. You guys have a great boat.

    Thanks Jim for the great videos. I especially like the one about cost of owning a Catalina 22. The 1975 Capri 22 that I'm restoring was in Fair shape when I bought it, so was the trailer. Which just like you explained, has kept my costs from being crazy expensive. I'd like to find a blue, canvas companionway cover like the one you described in that video. Did you order that from somewhere? Or did you have it custom made? Mahalo.

      @@jimslittleboat4388 Hi Jim, saw the canvas companionway video... way beyond my skill level. Jim, I started a charter sailing company in Bellingham in 1978 and ran Affordable Dream Sailing for 26 years. Early on I learned to use Washburn's Tide tables. A one time chart book buy and an annual tide table booklet that corresponds to the chart book. There is also a Canadian version that overlaps Puget Sound and the San Juans. Watching one of your videos, I saw you running against the tide, so thought I'd mention it to you. All the best, Capt Sayles.
