  • Jim repairs the lip of the sliding hatch by adding fiberglass with thickened resin. He includes some tips on installing the hatch rails single handed.
Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

These jobs are hard enough without adding the complexity of making a video along with it. I really appreciate your effort and willingness to share. Very practical as well as entertaining, great job!

Hi JIm. I really like this video. The ridge complete broke off on the starboard side of my cabin top. The port side looks like it could come off this season as well. Inspired by your video I went out and bought some 105 and some 205 and a strand sheet. The Stingy Sailor suggested making a mold with painters tape. Maybe I’ll let you know now I make out. Thanks for the inspiration.

I probably just haven't found the right episode yet but I feel the need to ask... What are the star knobs on your slide hatch there for?

Thanks for the video, i'll be tackling this repair over the winter. Id like to add the screws and track you've got to keep the slider under control. Do you have a source for them? Thanks

No source. I just went to a sheet metal shop that specializes in fabrication . The pieces cost m3 $40 (min charge) and $20 for the beer fund. When I go there, the guys in the shop, always shove my little jobs to the top of the list.

How do you get the sliding hatch off?

You need to take off one of the rails. There are four large screws on the cabin overhead. Doesn't matter which side you take off. When you put the hatch back, you have to line up the holes without smearing the sealant all over the deck. I do it by myself, but it''s easier with help. (I think)
