  • Jim repairs the braking mechanism on the keel winch so that it lowers properly. You will need some special tools (inch-pound torque wrench and a thin 3/4 open end wrench, and a 3/4 deep socket) to do this operation yourself. Special thanks to Pete Darling at Horizon Global for advice.
Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

A few drops of 3 in 1 oil on the "washers" before work is undertaken should reduce the friction enough to confirm or isolate source of friction. Thanks for video.

Maybe, Joe. I would be careful, it relies on friction.

@@jimslittleboat4388 I'm sure there is a reason why designers did not introduce a worm gear winch and dispense with "friction" as a brake element. Thank you for your videos.

Very informative video. I just acquired a boat and the keel winch is missing completely. I need to research a new one and this helped a bunch. Thanks again.

The winch they sell at Catalina Direct seems a litle pricey but it has the right size handle. If you get the same winch elsewhere the handle is generally too long.

@@jimslittleboat4388 My boat is a 1974 Irwin 28 and parts are hard to come by. I will have to retrofit something. I am actually looking at electrics ones now because of the orientation. Thanks for your response!

good morning and congratulations for the tutorials. I wanted to ask you if you can tell me how much the ballast of the Catalina 22 weighs. I should build one because I have to modify a boat from a fixed dinghy to a mobile one. Thanks in advance

Nothing. I am not a student of any boats other than the Catalina 22 and the Tanzer 16.
