Keel Winch Woes -- Catalina 22 Keel Brake Winch Repair -- Jim's Little Boat

Jim repairs the braking mechanism on the keel winch so that it lowers properly. You will need some special tools (inch-pound torque wrench and a thin 3/4 open end wrench, and a 3/4 deep socket) to do this operation yourself. Special thanks to Pete Darling at Horizon Global for advice.

A few drops of 3 in 1 oil on the "washers" before work is undertaken should reduce the friction enough to confirm or isolate source of friction. Thanks for video.

The winch they sell at Catalina Direct seems a litle pricey but it has the right size handle. If you get the same winch elsewhere the handle is generally too long.
