  • Learn to sail: Novice sailors, The Webers, reflect on their first sailing season. They share their time at sailing school, and their first big round-up caught on video.
Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

LMAO, just when I noticed the safety line wasn't clasped shut, a hand appears and closes it😄

Good job with the video Jim, I think it’s important to share with new sailors to not be afraid, our mistake was not understanding that we live in a gusty environment. Sailing school and its tendencies toward learning big boats didn’t make us aware of small boat, gusting tactics. Jim gave good advice prior to our round up to “never make fast the lines of a small boat “. We herd the words but didn’t understand the potential outcome of too much wind. Our early 22 isn’t rigged to reef, so…we now sail with sheets in hand ready to spill wind and maintain control. We survey the water and “see the wind coming”.

@@jimslittleboat4388 - (this is off topic) I have a question about the lewmar winches on my boat 1972 C-22, the have a small size socket and I can't find anywhere that explains the sizing... do you know where I can find replacement handles? or am I going to have to replace the winches to be able to get handles? - you seem like the only guy on YT that would know... thanks Jim.

"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards."
      - Vernon Sanders Law
Andy, this is the lesson to be learned and it's where I'm at on my sailing journey. These are my home waters too and I've been working hard to learn how to manage the gusty, swirling winds of Budd Bay. Learning how to apply sail trim to shape the sails and how to rig my C-22 so I can respond to changing conditions has been my focus this year.
I want to be able to sail with confidence when conditions change for the worst, which I hope will make for a more pleasant (or at least less stressful) experience for my family. I liken it to learning to drive on ice by practicing recovering from a skid in a parking lot. The goal is to learn the limits and how to respond safely without panicking when things get sideways in real life.
Fair winds, maybe we'll see you out on the bay at some point this summer.

Ok we have your new “barn find” !
We just bought a 1973 Cat 22 that was purchased new in the Idaho desert, and sailed only a dozen times before stored for 40 years with one owner, and then 10 more years with last owner before we found it on CL. Hull 3032 with all original galley etc! We paid 500$

Great video Jim. I'm glad to hear that the ASA 101 experience from PSSI is the same for most of us! :-)

I did a round up last summer, I let the main sheet out, but I guess the wind gusted even higher and the head sail took it all, I ended up on the floor of the cockpit and couldn't release it, came close to needing a change of under ware 😅
