  • For Catalina 22 owners who are missing the step (bilge cover): Jim provides the measurements to make a template. This first iteration does not deal with the round corners; use rolls of tape to create the approximate curves.
Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

Thanks Jim. I'm missing my bilge cover and it looked like it was going to be a bit of a head scratcher. Just one of the many projects lined up for this C-22.

I think the dimensions will get you close enough to make a pattern that you can use with just a little fine tuning. Good luck.

Thanks for all the videos.....since there are plenty of us trying to upgrade our 40 year old treasure boats. This was very helpful since this is one of my top projects in getting her ready. Stepping down into the boat and trying to land on just the rim of the locker or the alternative, trying to see if you can still get your kneecap to touch your chin ( both exercises are best done in the dark with wet shoes ) can be moderately exciting. I am making mine out of some remnants of what AMF now uses for bowling alley lanes.....very tough stuff, but will need a light sanding and maybe some paint and non-skid. Great stuff, well presented. And if we were closer, I would definitely buy you a beer for your good efforts. Before I rip into any new project, I search your videos since they are always well thought out and well presented.

Thank you. I think these little boats are worth the effort. I'm glad I can help a bit.

Thanks. Just trying to help out. In ten years somebody will get a 50-year-old boat with a missing step, and this will save them a couple of trips up and down the step ladder.

Nice video Jim. Is there any chance you would consider doing a video sharing your experience/tips for those new to sailing? I just finished my ASA 101 at the local sailing club, but what suggestions would you have for building skills? Is there anything you would have done differently in learning to sail?

Hmm. Karl, there are many fine videos about learning how to sail. I doubt that I could add much to that body of knowledge other than my simultaneous cocky/humble attitude. I have taught several people to sail. And the teacher in me has a lesson plan for every session. At first we just practice tacking--then gibing. Then we work on sail trim--not too fussy. Then steering to the wind on the up wind legs. After that steering to course. Anchoring is something nobody practices much, and I only show people once -- it should be more. I am a big proponent of sailing the anchor in under jib alone. hmm Wearing ship when the wind is light--stay to leeward of stuff that you can hit--right of way--hmm way too long answer. Lesson plan for every sail is probably the short answer. :) Oh and man overboard--I don't care what ASA says, I think you should lay to leeward of MOB.

@@jimslittleboat4388 That's not too long of an answer at all and I appreciate the candidness. I probably should have mentioned I took my course at the sailing club in Tacoma, so I'm a local. It was a good class, but they firehose you with so much information that now I'm trying to figure out bringing it all back together on my own so as not to lose the skills. Either way, I appreciate all of the little tidbits you impart to us here.

@@kkrotke You're okay then Karl. Go as often as you can. Pick weather that is appropriate to your skill level--and then just a little more, and most importantly "Never make fast the sheets of a small boat." (especially the jib sheets). I will send a picture.

If you contact me on facebook or email jslosson@aol.com I can share a great video of what happens when you have jib and main cleated as a gust hits.
