  • Jim's shares some techniques to play the sheets for sailing close hauled in a small sailboat when the wind is gusty.
Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

Nice video. Good to see someone teaching folks how to play the main in puffs.
One comment on the Rudder Craft rudder. They make two different models, only the one with the "high performance" model is not class legal and cannot be used in one design events.

I like your comment about the fenders out. The gang at my marina call me out about forgetting to haul them in but I remind them that you can’t be called a sailor if you never leave the marina.

We always bring the fenders if it looks like they will float away--On that particular day, we did not know we would get good wind--it just happened and then we got busy steering!

I would like to figure out how to install a big thick rope or wood rub rail on my Catalina 22 so the fenders wouldn't be needed as much.

@@Land_an_sea How would you handle docks at different heights above the water?

@@jimslittleboat4388 Well I don't think it would work all the time, you would still need fenders for those situations but at least around here the public docks are thick enough, or the pilons are close enough , that it would work alot of the time.
I single hand most of the time and those fenders are hard to get in.

Hello Jim, what is the part number for the rudder, and from whom did you purchase it.

It is the Rudder Craft rudder available from Catalina Direct or you can purchase it from Rudder Craft. About a $1000 -- completely changes the character of the boat.
