  • How much wind is too much wind for sailing a Catalina 22? Jim does a single-handed over-nighter and runs into a few problems in his Catalina 22, "Bootstrap" The Catalina 22 does not like the wind against the current and the resulting waves. The next day he gets wet--really wet.

Smaller the boat - the bigger the experience. Well done.

"It's okay to make mistakes, but they really should be new ones." Lot of wisdom there, Jim. And IMHO, There would never be a TH-cam story told if the captain of Seanachai was single handling. Good job!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am glad you made it home safe without and major issues with the boat or yourself. Things can change quickly on the water despite the best preparations. I am surprised they continued the race in those conditions with boats that are clearly not built for those conditions, lots of stories all round I am sure. Hopefully, everyone came through it like you, in one piece, and able to smile and share their experiences.
The estuary I sail in can develop 3-4 ft seas with any thunderstorm, or on its northern side, consistently strong southerly winds with its 25 mile fetch. It is good to know what your boat can and can not handle. You have that down. Thanks again, your videos are always informative and interesting.

My wife is from Longview, Wa but we currently live in Kansas. We were inspired to re-visit the sailing world while staying at an AirBNB near Gig Harbor. We bought a Gloucester 22, completed some ASA courses, put the boat in a club slip at a near by lake and we’ve been sailing and learning. We hope to explore the sound via sail someday. Thanks for the vid, Ive heard the sound can be challenging but I guess most beautiful things are. And thanks for being “real” about your sailing experiences! Lastly, a request. Please don’t hire a scantly clad assistant to boost your viewership like so many channels. If you do Ill drop this channel like a boom with a forgotten topping lift! Cheers!

No worries! My wife doesn't like sailing and scantily clad crew.

Keep up the great videos. Me and the wife just got our Cat 22, and it's great to see others making videos with them

When it comes to rain and cold I prefer a full body flater suit. I like your videos.

Quality rain gear and footwear (rubber boots) are absolutely mandatory especially if it is cool or cold. I used Helly Hansen rain gear for years and it is excellent. Kinda expensive but good. I went on several trips to AK that included week long trips onto Prince William Sound. I wore rain gear, boots, rubber gloves and wool hat most often. This was in June too. We had a buddy heater along too, which was a life saver.

After this video, I bought a $300 raincoat (on sale). Even in August I keep a complete set of dry clothes and all my foul weather gear aboard.

@@jimslittleboat4388 Excellent. I picked up a couple of army surplus wool blankets that I put in vacuum bags and keep on the boat.
      Wet and cold sucks. MH

I really appreciate your vidoes. I live on Bainbridge and I plan on getting a Catalina 22 in the next 3-5 years. Thanks!

I bought my rainwear from this company "E. Strauss", they sell work clothes, but the safety clothes in yellow or orange also have buttoned winter lining (translatet by google)

Do you still have the originally provided outboard mount or did you replace it with one of greater range? My boat (1985) has the original. I am considering a different one with more reach to avoid a situation like you encountered where the motor was coming out of the water. I live on the west coast (southern California) and we do most of our sailing in the open ocean.

Interesting trip for sure. What size of outboard do you have?

I have the Tohatsu Sail Pro 6 with the extra long shaft. The extra five inches doesn't usually matter all that much, but on this trip, it was extremely helpful. Even with the bracket at its lowest setting the prop would come out of the water occasionally.

Hello. I have a catalina 25. There is no videos that I can find that rolls how to rig for a reef in the sail. Can you direct me to something? Everything I've seen has the rigging already rigged and just tells you how to use it.

    • @jimslittleboat4388

Have you looked at my video on reefing. If someone near you has the Catalina 22 Direct videos that is a good start, but as I say in my video I didn't like the single line reefing and changed it to simple two line. The big thing is where you located the aft reef line and turning block on the other side. If you drop the sail enough so the reef points sit on the boom I like the pad eye and turning block to be about an inch aft of the reef cringle.
