Connection Design Overview - Part 6: Create Multiple User Templates || Import/Export data from Excel
In this video, I will cover how we can add multiple connection templates under any custom database, copy paste data from different database and export full connector information to excel for reporting and estimation, it can also be used for drafting purpose.
For any steel structure, connections are the most vulnerable part, and we need to design these properly considering all factors and check whether it can withstand the critical most loading condition. For any industrial or commercial steel building, like a plant or pipe rack structure, or a PEB warehouse, there are thousands of connections which we need to design, including member to member, bracing or base plate connection. To design any connection, we require the geometric data - like section information, orientation, spacing along with the load data, or member end forces. Based on this, connection design is performed.

If we design a steel structure in STAAD using traditional design approach, then we need to manually review the design results and change the section size so that the optimum section is used. Proper optimization of the entire structure not only reduces the overall steel weight bu...

Hello Is there any openstaad module which extracts steel utilization ratio for all the parameters and can also extract governing load case of that utilization ratio.?
For AISC 360-16, yes you can extract design ratio from multiple blocks (GetMultipleMemberSteelDesignResults). For other design codes, ratio from the last block is extracted. Governing load case along with other critical information (clause, section, force) can be extracted using same OpenSTAAD function.
Sir please make a video on how to read staad output for steel sections in detail. Thanks
Surojit, why is RAM connection so limited? Why don't we have simple bracing connections for example?
All connection templates are not available for all design codes. For AISC code, multiple bracing templates are available (horizontal as well as vertical bracing connection), not for Indian or Euro code. This is one limitation of the program.
Very helpful video Sir. How could I contact you?
You are excellent... please make me learn the macro Excel program
Excellent series of videos. I have learnt so much on how to implement Openstaad into my spreadsheets using VBA as the OpenSTAAD documentation is sometimes confusing. When I try to get to the user gallery from the link in the notes I get a "The page you are looking for could not be found." error. Hopefully this will be resolved soon as I would love to have a look at your implementation of a Sequential Silent Analysis spreadsheet. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks for explaining automation, I got some ideas by watching this video!!!
Hello Sir, Can u provide from where can we get Staad Pro V22 update 8 Crack ?
Hi sir, does purlin need to release axial? because it acts as beam, so mainly bending stress
It is better to consider all force components for purlin member design. If the axial force is small, then the force/capacity ratio will be negligible and will not affect the critical ratio. Also, interaction check is important considering axial + bending condition.
So, could minor bending or axial force be large? In this case the section it self needs change if so
do share excel sheet. In bentley communities it was removed
Can you please this much details model provided using IS code with all check.?
Thank you sir..keep posting such a very informative lessons.😊
Thank you for sharing sir. Much appreciated 😊👍
Is it possible to design the connection for some percentage (say 60%) of the shear strength of the section?
Sir please continue the series.
Great Quality and to-the-point content. Adressing all queries that can come in one's mind.
Thank you for the valuable information. Would you please help me with adding a (designable) cold formed section that's not similar to the database. Some of my cold formed sections are imported from China and have a weird channel-like shape. What would be the correct method to add such sections?
Design of custom shape cold formed section is not possible. One alternative is to find the equivalent section properties considering any close standard shape (say, channel section or channel with lips), then add that property in the standard cold formed database under that category. With this approach, you can design that section.
@@surojit_ghosh Thank you very much for your reply!
Kindly make a video on types of bracing and their suitability based on the requirements.
Would you be willing to share this Excel design sheet..?? It'll be highly appreciated By the way nice content. Helps me a lot as a structure designer. Love from Pakistan
Thank you for the information. How would you deal with wind loads on a tilted roof (reverse tilt) using this method you showed based on the codes?

Sorry out of topic, can you explain how to add wave load in Staadpro ?
Previously, there was a module in STAAD known as STAAD Offshore using which we can generate wave load and apply that load in STAAD model. Now, this module has been discontinued. One alternative is to apply dynamic load (Time history) to simulate the wave load. Else, you need to use SACS which is a specialized program for this.
very informative..thanks a lot
Please suggest me

Eigen solution gives value of time period for each mode ,which mode's time period should be consider for analysis and design?
For dynamic analysis, individual modal results are considered. If you want to use time period from eigen solution for static analysis, you need to consider the fundamental time period value, normally the value reported for first mode.
Dear is there any option to provide stiffener on both side Moment extended End Plate connection ( if yes kindly tell me )
I presume it is a beam column flange type of MEP connection and you want to provide stiffener plate in both side of the web. It is possible to include such stiffener plate (top, bottom or both) in both side of the web along with diagonal stiffener or doubler plate. After design, from connection pad, you can provide this type of stiffener.
@@surojit_ghosh I checked beam to beam connection the stiffeners option is not available
The download link is expired. Can you share the tool link again please? Thank you.

Sir, for the bracing members I am using equal angle section but everytime the members fail because of slenderness. Can you please tell how to tackle this situation?
If Compression check is ok, you can bypass slenderness check using MAIN -1 and TMAIN -1 parameter for IS800:2007.
Sir.. can you please tell that why the utilization ratio is coming high for bracing?the length of X bracing is near about 6.5 m and it is provided as roof bracing. But the utilization ratio is coming near 2. I am using 100×100×10 single angle section
If the structure consist of both RC walls and brick walls then which time period formula should be used??
As RC wall provide more lateral stiffness, you need to consider the equation corresponding to that.
If the infill walls are present in architecture drawing, but in staad pro , diagonal struts are not modelled, then which formula should be used for estimating time period? As per IS 1893 part 1) , (a), (b) or (c) ??
It's either 2nd or 3rd equation under (a), depending on the type of wall. For RC concrete wall, it is 2nd. For brick wall, it is 3rd.
@@surojit_ghosh if the structure consist of both RC walls and brick walls, then which equation should be used?
How did you create the excel sheet? could you pl make a tutorial on the same?

Can RAM CONNECTION STAND-ALONE design base-plate (gusseted column base with stiffener) ? Can it design anchor bolts as per indian code ? Is it checks all clauses of IS 800: 700 ?
Yes, it can design a gusseted base plate connection with stiffener plate. All design checks are performed including anchor bolt and concrete block checks.
Thanks, Can RAM CONNECTION STAND ALONE checks the concrete pedestal for truncated conical failure, when anchor bolts is in tension ?, as per Indian code ?
Make video on dynamic seismic analysis/non-linear time history analysis along with theoretical concepts.
please continue the series. been stuck on how to apply wind load. the cable/bracing somehow disrupts the distribution of wind load to the structure and I dont know how to fix it.
You can go through this video to know more about application of wind load -- th-cam.com/video/cIDVp-u79y8/w-d-xo.html
@@surojit_ghosh Thank you sir. I just found out that I do not have the wind load generator feature. I only got v22 up.6. still got the same problem with the bracing. it does not distribute the wind load properly. some areas are not hatched hence maybe Staad is considering it as an open hole in the structure.

Hi Mr Ghosh, do you know how to model a fly brace which connects a main frame column to girt within the same node? Thanks sir
You question is not clear to me, a picture with the arrangement might be helpful. You can connect the girt with main column using brace member (including fly bracing), either you can model it in STAAD model or use a control dependent relation to simulate a rigid link without modelling it.
Hi! Do you have any reference to calculate warping constant for built-up steel section? For example, H-shape + Tee shape. The warping constant is based on the property of the generated general section and is not based on the actual shape of the built-up section.
You can consult Roark's Book of formulas.
