Parkinsons Walks Friday Vlog + Ben Self Memorial Flotilla
This week, where are all the Camels. We look at everyone's favourite Severn Valley Railway station before paying our respects to a legend.
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

    You had me worried Ron, I was afraid that you weren't venturing outside...what a relief you made it. Thanks for the nice visit, it's just what OVM needed, she's been upset because I don't take her swimming enough, apparently. Anyway, you took her mind off it, that is until the video started with all that water, thanks so much for the "trigger warning". It seems like only last year I was saying that I was giving the AC its annual test. Well today was the day for this year, it's on now and things are cooling down after a rather muggy day. I'll have to set a reminder to turn it off soon before the dog gets used to it and gets even more demanding. Have a good week Ron, sorry about the late submission, every day is starting to blend a bit...

    Your garden looks beautiful Ron. What a lot of work someone is putting in to keep it so fresh and colourful. I keep telling my daughter how nice and perfumed those Nemesias are. Falling on deaf ears so far. The older sister hasn’t been far this week. Mostly chasing up appointments in the NHS and that’s quite challenging. The older sister also says don’t ever feel the pressure of having to reply to comments. We don’t want you to stop enjoying doing what you do because of the pressure. My finger tips are numb so I use a tipped stylus pen in my right hand but that’s mostly on the iPad. The film was very moving. A gathering of family and friends on boats like that to say goodbye is not something you see normally so thankyou very much for bringing this to us.

    Hi Ron, Late to the party! Yesterday we had some business to attend to and were up early and got home just in time to watch the end of the Spain Vs Germany game. I really don't know if I want to watch England this evening, I never seem to enjoy it, but just occasionally something memorable happens, I always think of Archie Gemmels goal against the Dutch (ok not England but I always support the British national teams) which was not quite enough but it did them proud and that's all I really want. I wonder what Trev's going to say about today's intrusion, I don't know anyone with a gun and my only experience of weapons is making torpedoes. Perhaps if we point the torpedo tube upwards it might give him a surprise? Your garden is looking wonderful a real tribute to the head gardener (and no doubt to the efforts of the under gardener) well done to you both!! A wonderful tribute to Ben Selfe, amazing to see so many narrow boats on the move at the same time, it must have been quite chaotic at the docks. I fully understand your wariness with animals. I give them a wide berth. The goats that I mentioned were on the most impossible cliff side, but it never worries them. As for me I was halfway up a reservoir dam and some distance from them. To try and allay your fears this was a really safe, wide path which presented no danger and fully open for use but it doesn't really lead anywhere ...... although there is an interesting abandoned canal at the end not a navigable one I might add, dry as a bone anyway. I think the walking season is now at an end, yesterday the car indicated 37° mind you, on the way back, I did spot some chimneys on the horizon and made a detour to take them in!! Actually I have a chimney dilemma. We have a log burner and there is this sound coming from it as if a bird has fallen down it and can't get back up. Its not an easy job to get to it .... "Though I spends me time in the ashes and smoke In this 'ole wide world there's no 'appier bloke" I wish I could help it, that would make me a happier bloke. Have a great weekend!!

      @davidberlanny3308 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ParkinsonsWalks Hi Ron, unfortunately it's not uncommon less so on the log burner chimney because at 37° we aren't lighting any fires at the moment. Our boiler for hot water does tick over all year and when we have it serviced we often find several birds who after perching on the edge high up then get overcome by the fumes and fall down. Shame they're not bigger I might get a Sunday roast and as I type that the poor thing is still struggling away. If I try and dismantle it, the baffle weighs maybe 10 kgs cast iron, and the moment it is free it would be off into the house, I would have no way of trapping it. I don't know, maybe one of Michael's cats could persuade it back up the chimney .....

      @@ParkinsonsWalksHi Ron, this canal will date back to the end of the 19th century or start of the 20th as the need for electricity grew to meet the demands of the expanding tramway system and domestic demand as well. The canal is about 6' deep and wide and clings to the contours of the hillside and where it can't do that it tunnels it's way through, some parts are literally on a precipice. At its end there is a huge header pond which is still there (and I have visited) the two large downpipes now only exist in photos as does the generating building. The guide book walked this part and I think it's still transitable but it's one to do in company. In the other direction nothing can be seen as it is well below the level of the water in the reservoir as is the tramway.

    Good afternoon Ron! I am a bit blearly eyed staying up listening to the election results (I have done this since I was about 8 years old!!) on the radio (I am more of a radio than TV sort of person), so sorry for being late! Another lovely vlog, and thank you for the couple of mentions. Hmm - that's a dilemma over authenticity and being clean and shiny on heritage railways. I do remember when I filmed a train on one of the heritage lines that I often feature on my channel, and the coaches outside were dirty and authentic! The comments below the video weren't too kind!! I think most heritage visitors would prefer them to be clean and shiny, but as I like authenticity, I prefer it to look like they would have looked - maybe they should have an 'authentic' weekend once or twice a year, like they do with 1940s weekend (tomorrow on the SVR!) and Thomas The Tank Engine and the like. There's a thought for their marketing teams... Your cinema club on the Gloucester & Sharpness and Gloucester Docks was incredibly moving and quite beautiful. I think I had seen it before, but I think this included new footage, with different and very suitable and apt music to accompany it. Thank you! Great work Ron, Hope you have a good weekend and week, Take care, Paul

This summer is packed with colour, lovely smells and loads of raspberries. Update on the kittens - now 8 weeks old, growing like you wouldn't believe and are into and up to everything. Hi Ron, as ever a really enjoyable video. The "Spencer Mineral Waters Bromsgrove" sign on the side of the building took me back to my youth 70 years ago. I lived near Bromsgrove and we got a weekly delivery of two bottles of their pop. It was always lemonade and orangeade . Non of this new fangled cola then! I suspect the sign came from somewhere else as Bromsgrove to Hampton Loade would have been a torturous journey. Seeing the exchange of tablets made me wonder what the signalmans life must have been like during a Salopian winter of yesteryear. Arms held high and rain running down the sleeves. But they were tough then just like their their buildings and trains. Please keep these memory maker videos coming. Regards Mo Johnson

That has been there many years and gradually restored. Although railways were built for freight, the GWR really looked after their passengers too (not customers) having lit fires in the lovely waiting rooms instead of bus shelters with strange metal planks you are meant to perch on that we see so often now. I don’t know if you have tried out the new Worcester Parkway station but on the London platform there was no shelter at all and it’s quite high above the rest of the station. Not very pleasant on a wet windy day and there was no coffee shop but very posh loos. I wonder what anyone else thinks of it. Luckily I tried it on a nice warm day. Thank you 🌻

    Good morning Ron and thank you for today's video. Hampton Loade is my favourite station on the SVR. The station itself is absolutely charming and couldn't be more representative of a country station back in the day. Even having the original entrance maintained as it would have been and other "outside" attention to detail enhances it even more. Regarding heritage railways in general, there is one aspect that I rarely see addressed, and that is the cosmetic condition of the locomotive and rolling stock. On heritage railways they are always presented in immaculate condition with gleaming paint and polished brasswork etc. Now, when I grew up in the steam era, unless you saw a locomotive that had just been outshopped from the works, they were generally grimy and showed, authentically, the effects of the hard working life that they led. So my question is, should we see at least one locomotive in that condition on our heritage railways to give a complete picture of how they used to be? I am just referring to the cosmetic condition here of course; the locomotive would be maintained to the high standard of performance and safety as it is now. In the model railway world where modellers produce exhibition layouts, there are quite often locomotives that are painted to represent an ageing engine in poor cosmetic condition to give that sense of authenticity: I would be interested to here Simon The Hairy Golfer's views on that one. I have raised this question with some of my colleagues on the Pontypool & Blaenavon Heritage Railway where I volunteer. There are mixed feelings but certainly some sympathy with my thoughts on this. So, what do other members of the PW family think? I would be very interested to hear your comments. Would it deter visitors, the lifeblood of the railway, who want to see immaculate engines for example? Could the same thoughts be applied to the quality of the stations which were also far from immaculate at times? Thanks again Ron for this week's offering and best wishes to you, Pauline and all of the PW family. Regards, Trev.

      @ParkinsonsWalks 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Trev, what a wonderful talking point. I'm with you on this one, you don't often see immaculate locomotives in archive film. I don't think they need to look uncared for, as was the case in the latter days of steam, but 'well used' would do it. Hope you are well, take care. Pauline & Ron

      This is an interesting question, some time ago I got a DVD (I think it was a freebie) called "The Glory Days of Steam". It told the story of the big four through to BR and the final days of steam showing how things were back then. It finishes on a high note on a heritage railway saying that today's gleaming examples are truly the glory days of steam. I can understand weathering on model railways, there is a video from Chadwick on this right now and each to their own on this one. I think a heritage railway needs to keep them shiny and attractive but also make the maintenance areas open and visible as much as possible so people can see how dirty these machines become and the effort required to make them look good. That said the coach interiors need to be as clean as possible. There might be a danger in serving British Rail sandwiches to today's public though ........

    • @ngaugeonashelf4417
      @ngaugeonashelf4417 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello Trev, indeed locos were grimey especially at the end of steam. They basically gave up looking after them and so many were unmaintained and leaked steam everywhere or were restricted on speed due to loss of boiler pressure and worn out bearings. They ran them into the ground. They weren't that bad in the 30's and further back so if you remember dirty locos it's because they had given up on them. As to models people do indeed weather everything in sight with an airbrush. Some are very talented and some not so much. I've seen some stuff on ebay that looked like a 6 inch brush had been used. It's all down to taste and skill I suppose. I don't own an airbrush nor have I ever used one. I'm not going to learn now and destroy an expensive item. So my layout is a preserved one where everything is clean and shiney like it used to be and when the Station Master had a huge amount of power to make sure the brass gleamed! Cheers. Simon

      @@davidberlanny3308 Thanks for your input David. A good compromise between keeping the locomotives pristine and allowing the public to view them when they are being maintained away from the running line. British Rail sandwiches are, despite being super expensive, a lot better than they used to be. Could defo be a retrograde step to offer them the way they used to be though; you can take authenticity a bit too far sometimes...........!

      @@ngaugeonashelf4417 Hi Simon. Yes, what with the run down during the war, the 1950's BR modernisation plan and then Beeching's Re-shaping of British Railways, there was little chance that steam locomotives were ever going to look the way they did before. As an aside, can I say that, as a subscriber, I really enjoy your channel and the piece you did called "I'm Not A Modeller and I Don't Care" was excellent. There are so many people who want to criticise because you don't do things the way the rest of the world wants to do it - you are not conforming to the "norm". Well I'm 100% with you. I'll do what I want thank you very much and if someone doesn't like it they can s** off, because I don't care either. You make an excellent point above, where to try and weather your models without having the expertise or the equipment to do it properly would be destructive, and therefore you have decided to have a layout that reflects a preserved railway. Sounds like common sense to me, which some who criticise seem to be sadly lacking. Gets down off soapbox........

    Hello Ron no adventures this week but thank you for the lovely memories brought back from Cornwall. We cycled that route many years ago and it’s by no means flat. I liked the nice sedate pace of your cycling as some vloggers on high speed bikes leave me feeling travel dizzy in my armchair and I could enjoy the scenery. Ooh that magnificent viaduct. That same holiday we decided to train and bike to my stay with my sister and family down in Delabole on a farm. Well we got to Bodmin Parkway ok then transferred to the steam railway as far as Wenford Bridge ( I think), then biked through the lanes. Not so easy to find your way through those leafy Cornish lanes with just an ordnance survey map although it looked straightforward at home in the planning. About 2 miles from Delabole we gave up and phoned for family assistance/ the cavalry in the form of my brother in law and then could see where we had gone wrong. Like one of your other subscribers said what a wonderful trip that would be by train all the way to Padstow. The primroses were so lovely too. Thank you again and looking forward to next week.
