Evesham Midland Railway GWR Crossover

  • At some point, the Ashchurch to Barnt Green rails had to cross the GWR track. This would involve quite a substantial structure. Must be still there and easy to find then. You will be surprised.
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching.

Fascinating. Just down the road from here in Badsey. Behind the corrugated tin on Common Road used to be an old fashioned scrapyard, which kept my old cars going in my younger years. My friend works at the factory next to the A46 at 8:29, you can see a burned out tractor to the right of the picture, I remember him telling me about that in the summer.

Hi Ron and thank you for today's video. Your motivation and patience certainly paid off and well done for sticking with it and finding the prize! Not much more I can add as I maxed out on info when you did the Ashchurch to Barnt Green series and the search for the abutments of the Midland Railway bridge which crossed the Avon. All I can add is that as the line coming south from Barnt Green crossed the GWR line it was single track on a rising gradient of 1 in 137. The bridge was built on a skew as can be seen in the video, and the deck was of metal lattice construction similar to the one crossing the Avon. Once over the bridge, the line became double track before entering Evesham Midland station and then continued as double track all the way to Ashchurch.
Well that's my meagre offering today Ron. Have a great week and I look forward to your next adventure. Best wishes, Trev.

Marvellous! Those abutments are what I remember seeing from the train near where it crosses the Avon. Your persistence, as always, pays off and leaves us with some beautiful images of the river and railway bridge, along the way. Great video. Well done!

Hi Ron. It's so nice to see sun again, if only on your walk. It's been cloudy here for over a month, and quite mild, that is, until today when we entered a bit of a deep freeze. I may have to raise the setting on the thermostat for Sumac...we'll see. That looked like a fun walk, and as always, you don't seem to run into many fellow walkers. I hope all is well, take care and see you on Friday.

Hi Ron, I am so far behind with watching and commenting on everyone else's videos at the moment - my apologises!
I see you have been in God's own county of Worcestershire!
Gosh, the GWR route to Barnt Green and the West Midlands from Ashchurch, Evesham and Alcester would have been so useful today.
I must admit I am surprised that there aren't more remains there than there are. So many of these relics are now dissapearing from view due to nature consuming them.
    Great tour and adventure Ron!
I really enjoyed this - take care, Paul

Thank you again for bringing back memories. Last time I ventured there (late 70s early 80s) the embankment wasn't covered in trees and half expected it to have been leveled to farmland. Somewhere but I have no idea where there is a derilict signal box near Evesham if it hasn't been demolished

Hi Simon, the other day you were talking about TH-cam views. My son has a channel (Relentless Duck Productions} which he uses three maybe, or four times a year.
One of his regulars is the Exeter Car Trial, he films on an old Go-Pro or his phone, does minimal editing and then up loads it
Last year he had 152K views of the trial footage, and this year in couple of weeks nearly 4k so far.
It would appear that the algorithm doesn’t set out to reward those of us who work hard and try to maintain interesting and regular uploads

Well Ron. I have to admit this time I was completely lost. Even with the help of my book 'Lost Railways of Gloucestershire '. The more I read and the more I watched your video, the more confused I became. Although Mary has an OS map of the area, it is too recent to give me any relevant information. Mornin' Ron, Blue skys? amazing! I was expecting to see you out in a little rubber dingy!!
Your perseverance paid off nicely in the end. The abutment on the north side looks in fine fettle, the south side is showing signs of its age. It’s a shame you couldn’t get a shot of it from the other side.
The small skewed bridge looks like its taken its fair share of knocks, stone by the looks of it too.
The map of this junction is a delight to study. I had a look at railmaps online as well, the route is still easily discernable.
If it’s dry this weekend I’ve spotted some gold mines just up the river, I shall ask for permission to drill some holes in one of our frying pans ….. or maybe its better to seek forgiveness afterwards …….. perhaps Marilyn or Christina could advise me!!
    Have a great weekend!!

    • @ParkinsonsWalks
      @ParkinsonsWalks  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi David, you would have to break the ice first to go sailing today.
I would think they will have to do something to that bridge soon, it has certainly taken a battering
Drilling holes in Naria's frying pan sounds risky, and the problem with Christina and Marilyn is they will want part of the take.
Be careful in your exploring. Ron

@@ParkinsonsWalksWell from what I've read enough gold was found to make several crowns and gold leaf for churches.
Apparently the extraction method was called in Roman times "ruina montium" and required the construction of channels to bring water in from well upstream to blast the rock away.
In more recent times it was exploited on an industrial basis but it was eventually found to be uneconomic and frought with problems.
What remains are abandoned buildings and water channels it's quite near the outskirts of the city and a good place for walking.
So they tell me, people do still pan for gold higher up the river. I'm sure to find a rich seem of iron pyrites ..... otherwise known as fools gold!!
