  • This week, it's a dog's life, ask Sumac. We discuss memories of Dursley and the railway branchliine, we re-examine finds at Evesham country Park, before looking at the Tetbury Branchline. Action packed, don't miss it.
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

What a superb video. Glorious weather through some fabulous countryside. So many finds on the way to Kemble Station.
In case you and our Family Members are interested, Paul from West Country Wanderings has made a video showing the goods shed at Tetbury fully completed and in use as an arts centre..It's number 60 on his playlist of Railway Videos.
Thanks so much for the mention of this weeks Friday vlog. I got a comment from Trevor denying any knowledge about the model aircraft!

Ron, I was horrified to see you get kidnapped by that passing car at the beginning of the film. I'm not sure how they did it without stopping, but I'm glad you were able to escape and carry on with the story. A lovely walk indeed, despite the disappointing end..

    Thanks for the mention Ron.
I have finally been able to catch your vlog on the day it has gone out for a change, as I am editing today.
There was a lot in this vlog!
I didn't know the story behind how Coaley Jct Station got its name, so that was really interesting. At the rate they have been building new houses along Box Road in Cam now, the station (Cam & Dursley) now sits in the village itself! The car park is too small, due to the increasing number of passengers using it. Very useful station if you want to go to Bristol and further into the South West. Maybe they will leave it, as some passengers may migrate to Charfield Station just over the border in South Gloucestershire, which is due to reopen, and, maybe, Stonehouse (Midland) too.
Cinema Club was fascinating because it showed Tetbury Goods Shed being refurbished eight years ago. I did do a video on it about a year or so ago, so it was great to see it like this prior to it being opened. I haven't walked as far as Trouble House Halt (I think the footpath was exteneded to there after you filmed it) yet, but I did get some shots of Culkerton Station, which has been restored and is now a private residence. It was a lovely little film, with great charm. I particularly liked how you added the steam train sounds when you put up the old photo of Tetbury Station. A shame the little railcars couldn't save it and Cirencester too. I am sure it would be well used now.
Thanks Ron, and hope you have a great week.
    Take care,
    Paul

Delightful walk along the former quintessentially country branch line, complete with rudimentary 'halts' and 'whistles'. I found some You Tube archive footage which conveys some of its atmosphere. A trip from Tetbury to Cirencester with a break at Kemble - and back - would have been quite an adventure. I wonder how long you had to wait for your onwards connection. Mind you, who would want to pass through Kemble station without stopping awhile to admire its superb architecture, or possibly down a pint at the adjacent inn. Looking forward to your visit to Sharpness next week.

Mornin’ Ron, A dog’s life indeed, poor old Sumac accused of embezzlement too!!
Nice bit of editing at the start, Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) almost!!
Very enjoyable walk today complete with bench and nettles, if you’d brought a portable stove along with you it would have been just right for a soup stop!!
The restauration at Tetbury looks very sympathetic (I think Paul has one on the completed station). Nice touch to use the rails for parking lines. It’s hard to know quite what to do with a turntable, the only thing that’s comes to mind is a roundabout for children. I have been fortunate to come across a couple over here, the one at Zurgena station had been buried and has now been uncovered, the stone sides and central pillar are all that remain though.
Well done for persisting with the line and giving us a peak at Kemble station, shame you couldn’t get there by foot.
I was back out on the gold mine yesterday and found a small path to take me up to near the quarry face and made a few discoveries along the way, a tunnel exiting the hill and descending down in a large steel pipe and also continuing parallel to and inside the cliff face. The rock is an aggregate formed from the mountain building and subsequent erosion and then lifted high up. It’s a real mix of river stones and maybe sand, no gold to be found so far I’m afraid …. I will check the soles of my boots though, just in case!!
    Have a great weekend!!

A very enjoyable ‘matter arising’, Ron. I enjoyed your railway walk. You found some nice reminders of the old branch line, and the scenery was delightful. An update on the Cheltenham to Bishops Cleeve Recreational Trail. It’s a cycle way, not a greenway. It runs from the Racecourse roundabout, along the side of the Evesham Road, to Bishops Cleeve. Work started last November. Looks like another unsettled week coming up. I’ve got a couple of explores done, but, it’s still very wet underfoot. Take care. Ron.

Hello Ron. Lovely film about the line to Tetbury. I've visited the goods yard site on several occasions and always found the place highly interesting. I'm not sure that those sleepers actually lined up with and railway and the turn table appeared too high, but maybe the pit was filled in and the original turntable replaced on top. Is that old coach still there? It seemed so out of place, as it certainly wasn't of British origin.

Hi Ron. "Dappled sunlight and old railway sleepers" sounds like something I should get printed on a tee-shirt...or the name of a new Pop Band. OVM is walking around quite puffed up at being both the intro and "outro" of your Vlog...thanks for that, she's already full of herself without any help, Ron. It was sunny and mildish today. The groundhog apparently didn't see his shadow so it promises to be an early spring. I never could figure that out, you'd think if he DID see his shadow it would be an early spring...I guess I don't understand the groundhog mind. Do you have the equivalent of groundhog day in the UK? Badger day? Thanks for a really nice walk, Ron, and have a good week. James

Hello Ron and thank you for today's vlog and film about the Kemble to Tetbury branch line. I think TH-cam may have it in for me again. I wrote a piece about the walk you did at Evesham last week to finish up that series. It appeared to load ok and be visible on my PC, but when I looked for it on the TH-cam app on my phone it wasn't there! I reloaded it again on the PC, but as there was no comment from you, and I know that you answer every comment that is posted, I assume it was only me seeing it and no one else! I would write a piece on the Tetbury branch following film club today, but if it isn't loading there's not much point in taking the time to do the research, which can be considerable. Hopefully this will load and you will be able to respond with any advice ........Have a great week, best wishes Trev.

@@davidberlanny3308 Hi David. Yes, we have been here before, and since your advice last time I have been composing my reply in Word and then pasting it here successfully; something obviously upset it this time though. I don't think there were any references to other sites or links, but I wouldn't be surprised if TH-cam did throw a wobbly over that! Do you know if there is a way that you can be informed if someone replies to your post, or do you have to just come back here and check every now and again?
It sounds like the gold mine is a great adventure and the sort of place I would love to have a rummage around. @@757trevHi Trev, If you open your page on TH-cam and then press the settings icon you will find one called notifications scrolling down the list there is one called "replies to my comments" which if you set it, you will receive a notification in TH-cam if someone replies or likes your comment. I also receive an email that's probably in another setting though.
My experience is that my comments disappear quite quickly so I go back and check. One other trick is to edit the text a bit so it's slightly different. Sometimes have another go a bit later.
Of course I won't be leaving my friends on bread and gruel, but the first millions will be dedicated to a no fly zone on Fridays for a certain village near Haw Bridge ...... (Might need to be before Friday, I'll ask Ron)
Mind you the last attempt to work the mines ended in bankruptcy. More recently samples have been taken but the yield is too low to make it viable and that's without taking into account the impact on the environment or the lack of water. The reservoir upstream that previously supplied the water looks about 20% of capacity. Water restrictions have already started in Barcelona and in other areas. Not where we are though.
      All the best
