  • This week we talk about the Fetters Hill film and learn of some possible unpleasant history there. On a lighter note we review Gotherington Station Halt on the Gloucester Warwickshire Heritage Railway, and look forward to Cornwall next week
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

Thank you so much for the kind mention about my Dad, Ron.
I am very pleased to report that my Dad came home from Gloucester Hospital late yesterday evening, and he is now recovering well at home - he was so glad to be back, but he is certainly better than when he went in just over a couple of weeks ago. I will still be filming shorter and more local videos for a couple of weeks at least while he recovers.
Great to hear about the updates from all of your lovely subscribers.
Good to see another section of the M&SWJR - I have yet to visit Withington - looks lovely and lots to see in the area.
    Thanks so much Ron!
    Another lovely vlog.
Hope you have a good week,
    Take care,
    Paul

Marvellous video which captures the rural ambience of this stretch of the former MSWJ Railway, with its deep cuttings, high embankments and fine railway architecture. The trackway could be turned into a delightful footpath, through the woods to Chedworth, with it's beautifully preserved Roman villa and linking-up with the Monarch's Way. Thank you for a lovely Spring walk.

Good morning Ron and thank you for today's vlog & film. As threatened a couple of weeks ago, I am now back in harness and ready to invade the channel again with any trivia and nonsense that I can come up with! 😆 I had a lovely birthday and time with my brother when he came up recently. Lots of walking in the Forest of Dean and over here where I live in Wales. Visits to NT, English Heritage and Cadw sites were also on the cards. I'll be back to Tunbridge Wells next month which is my home town and where my brother still lives. T Wells is home to the Spa Valley Railway of course and several other heritage lines within easy driving distance. I noted that I gave some background to this video when it was posted previously, so I thought rather than re-invent the wheel, I would just reproduce it here again for anyone who missed it. Here we go:
"The M&SWJ was one of those survivors in the west that managed to get all the way to the grouping in 1923 without being plundered by the GWR. It finally succumbed in 1923 at the grouping of practically all the Britain's railways into the big four - the GWR got it in the end! Withington opened in 1891 and had one of the few crossing loops on the line. In terms of architecture, Withington (and Foss Cross) were unusual in that the station buildings had gable-ended roofs and no canopies, whereas the other stations on the line had hipped roofs and projecting canopies. The buildings were on the up (northbound) platform. From 1900 the M&SWJ track started to be doubled in stages, beginning with Andoversford to Withington. The section from Withington to Foss Cross being doubled in 1902. However, the line was singled again in 1923"
I'm looking forward to next week's video set in Cornwall. It is in my top 5 list of favourite walking places and it's easy to see why you love it so much. Have a great week, with best wishes to you, Pauline and all the PW family. Regards Trev

Hello Ron - greetings from Poland.
I've just looked back at the original video you made and read my comment. What a shame that everything is now forgotten about this railway. The infrastructure has just been left to fall apart.
Superb matters arising. Unfortunatley, I won't be with you next Friday as I have to go into hospital again for more tests on my kidneys. Only in for three days or so, so I can catch up up with what i missed on my return home.

    Mornin' Ron,
I'll catch up on the film club soon.
I watched the vlog with my mum which we both enjoyed. I'm unexpectedly in Portsmouth this week, bad news I'm afraid, as after a short illness, my father passed away in hospital last Friday. We have been looking after my mother this week, who was also very unwell. As you can imagine it's been a bit of a shock.
Lots of the anecdotes that I tell in my comments here are based on things we did together, or things he inspired me to do, things I'll never forget and your films often provide the key to those memories. I'm truly thankful to have found your channel, thank you TH-cam gods!!
Look after yourself Ron, I'll be back soon

Good morning Ron. First video of the day, as usual. That was a long walk too. How many miles did you travel?
I agree with you. All the work and toil that went into building that line, completely swept away in places. At least some of it remains further south with the Swindon & Cricklade railway doing their bit to preserve a few memories. (I must get over there again this summer). From Chiseldon south to Marlborough, most of the trackbed is intact. I walked this section a few years ago . Firstly from Ogbourne St. George to Marlborough and the the opposite direction up to Chiseldon. Nothing left in that village at all. Of course, we still have the 5 miles from Andover junction to Ludgershall, but that's only maintained for the MOD, although they do keep the track in good condition with regular maintenance trains.
Your video was very well put together as always, with several shots of your sprightly self, which I know takes time and effort to set the camera up. Your garden was looking very beautiful too. Stay safe and warm.

    • @ParkinsonsWalks
      @ParkinsonsWalks  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi Lionel, that must have been a 5 miler I think. Last time I went to Ludgershall the route had houses built over it so I had to abandon the walk. If you are planning to film in that area, I'll wait until I've seen it before another attempt. Look after yourselves. Ron

Hi Ron, thanks for the nice visit. We're a bit behind you here, blossom-wise, but it's been just as blustery today. It's strange because I feel that I've already had a spring when I was in Tennessee and the blossoms and daffs were out. I re-enjoyed the Withington walk. I never made it there when I was fortunate enough to be in the Cotswolds...maybe I should have bought a bike! Have a good week Ron. Good Morning Ron. The Battlefield lIne (I hadn't heard of it either) is where everybody is hungry. Nuneaton. Sorry. The day out is organised by Bachman so it's very much cheaper than normal. I don't know how far driver for a fiver goes. 40 yards probably!
Still not playing golf. I have had to catch up with the garden first. Fill a skip with block paving and scalpings. Then move 2 tons of soil. I know why navvies worked on beer- it's to numb the pain!
Lovely trip round Whittington again. Always gives me ideas seeing the things you find. It's funny seeing the old embankments with nothing growing on them and here today nature has claimed it back. Cheers. Simon

Good Morning, Ron. Some good comments on ‘matters arising’, and a very interesting walk on the old MSWJR at Withington. That section, from Withington to Chedworth would make an excellent greenway.
Did anyone spot the ‘gravestone’ in the mill stream, by the pheasant. I managed to get a screen grab of said stone and it is engraved with the name ROGER HOLLOWAY TODDINGTON 359. Probably not a gravestone then! Maybe set into a building as advertising? Who knows, but I would say the phone number is circa 1950’s/60’s? Say it quietly…..it’s stopped raining! Take care. Ron.
