  • This week sad news to start, a look back at the SWMJRailway, memories of Padstow in Cornwall. and looking forward to a family day out on the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

Good morning Ron. Thank you for today's "matters arising" and the lovely film of your winter walk. I love being out on a bright frosty winter's day where, compared to the summer haze, everything is clear with incredible contrast and an endless horizon - its worth getting up at the crack of dawn to experience such beauty. My favourite way to enjoy this is to get up at stupid o'clock well before sun rise and drive to Pen-Y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons (the highest point in southern England at 886 Metres), which I can climb in about an hour, and watch the sunrise and admire the stunning views. In the clear frosty air with no haze there are no words to describe the incredible views for 360 degrees all round. To the north you can see into Shropshire and to the south you can easily see the North Devon coast - insane!!
Coming back to the start of the film, I was so envious of the amount of bird life you get around your bird table. As I get a range of birds in my garden I decided a few weeks ago to splash out £100 (alright £99.99) and buy a very flash bird table with slate canopy and pretty finials etc. I also splashed out on a massive sack of mixed seeds. Buoyed with the prospect of watching the feeding frenzy from my kitchen window I quickly installed the table in the garden shoved a load of seed in it and sat back and waited for the extravaganza to commence. That was three weeks ago and I'm still waiting!! I'm getting very tired and need to go to bed soon 🤣. In desperation, I decided to leave a trail of bread from their usual hunting ground in the garden to the base of the table. All the bread as duly eaten but no scoffing of the bird seed followed. My next attempt was to put some seed around the finial on the top of the little shelter on the table in case they couldn't see the seed inside. Hey presto! They visited the top of the table, as evidenced by their droppings, but was any seed eaten inside or out? - of course not. My last attempt was to buy one of the those feeder things with fat balls in it and hang it on the side of the table to try and encourage them. Did that work? Anyone want to buy a bird table and some fat balls?
Looking forward to the film of the GWR next week Ron. Take care and best wishes to you and all of the PW family. Regards Trev.

Wonderful Trev, Pauline and I had a chuckle at that. I have been up Pen-Y-Fan once, nearly killed me, I took a week to get over it, but whilst we are name dropping, I have watched the sunrise from the top of Ayers Rock Australia. Our birds favorite (all of them), are sunflower hearts. We used to use mixed seed but they left more than they ate. Thanks for this weeks entertainment Trev. Take care of yourself. Ron

    Thank you Ron!
We (me, and my dad and mum) all watched this together.
Thank you so much for mentioning my dad - he was really touched that you mentioned him, well we all were. He continues to recover well.
Yes, likewise with regards to David and his recent sad loss. I know he watched my recent canal boat video - I think he comes back to the UK this coming week.
I do hope all is good with Michael's hospital tests too.
I do love the Parkinson's Walks family. Thank you.
Great vlog again, and I also enjoyed cinema club! Wonderful wintertime shadows and beautful use of music.
I look forward to next week's video from the GWSR.
Hope you have a good week.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I shared the video with one of my sisters who came back straight away commenting

I'll be travelling back to the UK tomorrow, I'll show my Mum she'll be really `pleased too. thank you once again!!
That was a real "Blue Noser" thats what we used to call these walks in the winter when I was in the scouts. Always good to get out and about whatever the weather if you can, you always feel much better when you get home!!
Look forward to hearing grandaughter Louise on next weeks video.
    Have a great weekend!!

@@ParkinsonsWalks found and watched. Thank you very much. Ross must have been very busy as a junction of the three lines. What a missed opportunity to take traffic off those busy roads. I knew where the exit to the tunnel was but would never have dared to stop. Just so busy and dangerous. Very nice to see the engine shed and lots of happy memories there.

Thanks for that lovely walk, Ron. You clearly live in a beautiful area, surrounded by small country lanes and a few farms. One item I noticed, early on in the walk, in a farmyard was a round stone trough with a heavy looking wheel which ran inside it. I can only imagine it was used for crushing something. Maybe horse driven? Very old and interesting.
I had a problem last Tuesday. Having played golf in the morning and waiting for Mary to pick me up, I was a little unsteady on my legs. When I got home, I decided to phone my surgery. The doctor said she would see me, but that she would refer me to Salisbury hospital, so it would be quicker if I made my own way there. We got there around 3:00 pm and left at 9 o'clock. I had numerous tests , none of which showed a problem, but they really looked after both of us with sandwiches and drinks. It's a great place to be, because they do care for their patients.
I've been fine ever since and hope to get to the Mid Hants Railway tomorrow as it is a special day with a 3 train service. Let's hope the weather holds up.

Good Morning, Ron. I missed last Fridays vlog, due to attending my Mum’s funeral. She managed a wonderful 98 years, now she is with Dad again. Bless her. It’s all happening on Parkinson’s Walks, at the moment! I haven’t been out ‘in the field’ at all recently. Hoping for a bit more warmth and no rain, then some exploring can happen. Take care. Ron.

Good morning Ron. I did enjoy hearing all the comments. Everyone seems to having ups and downs on your “family” blog. You mention your Parkinson’s above and well done doing the exercise even if you don’t feel like it. I volunteer with the local group here and we provide indoor exercise classes every week which are very popular. Getting out and about is so important though and think of all that vitamin D you are getting. When I looked outside at 7 there was frost on the cars here in late April! What’s gone wrong. I don’t know what time of year you took this morning’s film. I sat down for my lunch this week and a utube of Monmouth to Ross on Wye railway popped up and showed Ross at the end. So much has changed I just wonder if you might one day do a blog around Ross on Wye. If all else fails you can go to the lovely garden centre in the good shed and have a cream tea with your wife or even better their homemade soup and cheese scones. I really miss going there. Have a virtual cheese scone on me. Looking forward to seeing your trip on the GWR. Thank you 🌻

Hi Marilyn, you are so right, exercise is so important, it would be nice if the weather was a bit more user friendly. I did film the Ross garden center in my Gloucester to Ross railway, super place with echo's of its former railway life. Take care. Ron

Hi Ron. I'd forgotten about my earlier eclipse report. The bus trip was cloudy and heavy traffic forced us to stop short of our destination, since there was no way we'd make Grimsby in time. Hamilton was our new viewing point, still 100% but for about 25 seconds shorter duration. Ten minutes before totality the cloud cover broke and we were treated to a spectacular view. It's not often I'll admit to being wrong, simply because I'm seldom wrong, but that extra .3% allowed us to take off our glasses and see the bright ring around the moon as the sky turned quite dark. Seagulls nearby were confused and headed inland. It was an experience I probably won't see the likes of again, because the next full eclipse in this neck of the woods will be in about 40 years, and although I'm generally optimistic, I'm also somewhat realistic. Today the weather was very much like English spring, so I was a cross between sad and happy, "sappy" you might say. Dog enjoyed herself for an hour or two with a replacement toy, possum taking the place of the squirrel, similar fate however. Thanks for a very nice visit as always Ron. We're looking forward to an outdoor studio visit soon and your railway adventure as well, of course! James
