- Severn Valley Railway, a series of films covering the railway from top to bottom and everything in between. This film, the magnificent Highley Station in all its glory.
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. Not much walking this time, Ron - good to see you taking it easy. Lots of memories from my days of going to school on steam trains in the 1950s. I see platform tickets are still one penny, but of course nobody has a suitable coin these days! I liked the sign "You may telephone from here" and the notice on the phone "Out of use", would have been typical of British Railways in the old days. Keep up the good work!

I love Highley Station, and can never decide if I like this station or Arley the best.
Great seeing this on a decidely chilly and very wet June day today!
Amazing to think that, just like the Forest of Dean a little further to the South, this would once have been a hive of industrial activity supporting the large coal collieries around the village of Highley.
Thank you Ron - really enjoyed this - you brought out the atmosphere of it really well.

Hi Paul. I can see the dilemma, probably all the stations on this line have something that makes them special. Nice places to while away an hour or two. Look after yourself. Ron
A lovely look around Highley station Ron,
You mentioned the flower bed with the curved rails, this was the base of the original footbridge which unfortunately had to be demolished many years ago due to it's unsafe condition.. Well done to the railway for making good uses of it. The current bridge was erected some years ago now slightly further south of the original.

So nice to see your walk all around Highley station Ron. We used to get the train to Highley and have Sunday lunch there. It has all been so beautifully thought out with so many details. When you go through on the train with no time to get off you miss so much. Thank you again for all the reminders.

Good Evening Ron, well done to your wife and you for recording history. Makes me think what the young generation today will be filming in 70 years time. Could be the first electric cars, or even the old disused cycle lanes but whatever it is it won’t quite be the same. Railways then will sadly be as distant as Roman chariots.

Delightful views of Highley station with an eye for those details which help to convey something of the atmosphere of the line in its heyday - although it would then have been a lot noisier with animal livestock and the rattle of milk churns. As with all their stations, the SVR have done a superb job of restoration and the adjacent museum must surely rank as one of the best in the UK. Great video and looking forward to our next stop.

I can find plenty to see & do here all day, like Looking at all the Artefacts, Walks thru the Woods and down by the River - I find it Difficult to to imagine the what a Hive of Industrial Activity this place was in The Past with its Noise and Commotion When the Coal Mining was taking place, with all the Comings and Goings of Mining Wagons being Filled & Shunted about the Place, when it is so Peaceful and Tranquil in the Present Time. What a pretty country station. Very much like Arley - made to feel like days gone by, with the arrival of a local train pulled by a pannier tank engine. A lovely video, beautifully photographed.

Fully recovered? Never will be unfortunatley. Living with one working kidney has meant a change of life style. Different diet plus drinking up to 4 litres of water day. New medication too

A nice one Ron, beautiful videography as usual. I thought that engine was coming in a bit too fast on the coupling, but no, perfect...which goes to show you how much I know. The posters in the station reminded me that I was lucky enough to pick up some 1920s English railway posters a few weeks ago at an out-of-the-way auction. They had been used for a Canadian exhibition back then and after that just rolled up and forgotten in somebody's loft. I've been puttering away on making some frames for them using pieced together mouldings that I can buy from our local building supplies store. Actual picture frame moulding is too expensive (these are 60 x 50 inches) and I, as you may have deduced, am somewhat frugal. I'll get the pooch to make a video of them soon, she's itching to get in front of the camera (AKA phone) again. We're all looking forward to the next stop along the railway and I hope you are enjoying some nice weather. It's supposed to get into the "feels like" 40s here for the last week of school (seemingly endless but "very useful" meetings) so that should be fun...at least the reports are done.
"Somewhat frugal" James, Sumac and I need to converse to see if that truly represents the situation. It sounds like a very good find, well done you for sniffing them out. Best we don't mention the weather here I fancy. Don't forget to let the others have the benefit of your expertise at the "very useful" meetings. Hey you have finished the reports so what the heck. A very enjoyable explore around Highley Station, Ron. They have some very interesting railway artefacts from back in the days of steam. A well produced video, and very interesting. Keep them coming. Ron.

@@ParkinsonsWalks glad she is OK. The wife was made redundant from that office last October, so I left as well. She now works at Moreton garden centre and having just turned 72, I have finally retired. Just need some proper summer weather now! Ron.

I spied that pannier tank 7714 at the start, pulling a mixed array of carraiges, and thought, I've got one of them!! Well I don't as such but on my shelf above my screen there is a photo of me on the footplate of 6412. These are not the same class but look very similar (different piston sizes and strokes I think). This photo was taken in 1967 at Buckfastleigh I think, where it was restored and later pulled the first train on re-opening day, 5th April 1969. Cant say I look particularly happy on the footplate, looks like I'm hanging on for dear life!!
So did you have to pay the 40 shillings fine or not at 7:00, maybe you got imprisoned. If so pass the hat round and we'll see if we can get you out for the weekend!!

@davidbelanny3308 Hi David. I can understand how the railway company could try to get 40 shillings out of you, but have always wondered how they could define the imprisonment period. Surely that would be down to the court to decide......??

@@757trevYes, it's an interesting point on two counts. They've cast the sign, so no inflation back then!! And if you didn't pay it .... Who would lock you up and where? I guess people were less likely to complain in those days. Maybe they locked you up in Ron's studio 2 and you had to do a hard day's labour under the head gardener😮😮!!

Morning Ron. Very nice. I find poking round the the stations like this more fun that the train ride. Always lots of detail.to look at. Have you been to Didcot ?. Did the Clayton break down ? I think they were always a bit troublesome . Stay safe .Pete

Quite heavenly Ron. Pity about the diesel hauled service, but the rest of your film more than made up for that. Lovely station and well looked after. Proper signal box. Is that original? That branch off to the left looked extremely steep. Was the 1 in 100 gradient post referring to that? I've just filmed a piece on the Watercress line at Ropley. Should be on line early next week
I think the signal box might be original, not sure about the others. Looking forward to the Watercress line. Ron
