  • This week, we fight the aeroplanes and Lawn mowers before admitting defeat. We look back at the railway walk that wasn't. Consider walking in the rain, and end up in Raglan Castle.
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

When I lived in England, and in multiple visits later, I used to love visiting places like that. What amazes me is that the current craze for "health and safety" hasn't caused them all to be closed to the public. I guess it would take only one stray piece of masonry to fall and wipe out a visitor in any of the sites to have the whole lot closed down overnight. I hope it never happens.

That was certainly a grand structure and probably very awe inspiring when it was whole. I can't imagine you made many points with your lovely wife by running her up and down all those stairs! My knees were hurting just looking at all the up and downs.

Hello Ron - greetings from Poland.
Elder Brother? - I'm 76 - does that still qualify me? I am actually an elder brother. i have a wonderful sister, Jenny who is two and a half years younger than me. Lovely to hear from all your contributors from around the world.
Life here over the past week has proven that whem something dies, something new replaces it. Our 14 year old dog had to be put to sleep. Two days later, an outdoor cat that Mags feeds gave birth to three kittens. Mother and babies are doing well.
Raglan Castle is beautiful. What a monument to builders of the past. I felt sorry for Pauline having to go up and down all those stairs just so you could make a film with some glamour in it.

Hi Ron. It’s the older sister calling from Cheshire. That was a lovely blog today. I also drove past the castle many times but I unable to stop as we were usually on our way to the Ffestiniog railway. I’m glad you had your guardian angel with you to make sure you didn’t do anything rash like joining the jousting. Many many years ago you could have gone by train but you were about 70 years too late. My outing this week was to Monyash in the Peak District to meet my cousin. I drove through wind, rain and fog. Anyone who has driven the winding Macclesfield to Buxton road will know all about that. 30/35 mph most of the way as visibility was so poor. I could have caught the train to Parsley Hay station but that too closed to passengers the year before Raglan. It is believe me the bleakest place you would want to be deposited but now it’s a thriving bike hire and cafe for the cycle trails the Peak District has kept. The scenery when you can see it is stunning. I would still have had 5 miles to walk through the rain, wind and fog. Only 9 degrees in late May! So had to be the car. Thanks again.

Hi Marilyn, lovely to hear from you and that you are settled in your new role! You missed a treat with Raglan, but I can think of better ways to die rather than face those guys in a joust. That sounds like quite a journey you had there and its good to know you are home safe. Take care of yourself. Younger brother. Ron

Hello again Ron. I see your better half had a starring role in this one . Quite a surprise to suddenly see that enactment taking place. You fitted that in very well. It made a big difference to the whole castle scene. Plain walls to a tudor day out in an instant. Very well put together.

Good Morning Ron, I can't count the number of times I have been past that castle without going in. Probably due to the time of day I'm passing. It's a bit of a fixer upper! I wonder how an estate agent might describe it. Certainly light and airy! It's wonderful that we have these old buildings to view our history. Enjoy your bank holiday. Oh, I forgot, you're retired. EVERY day is a bank holiday! Simon

Great video which gives an excellent impression of Raglan's architectural splendour. There is enough remaining to enable one to readily imagine what it might have been like in medieval times. The views from the battlements were magnificent. Within living memory, you might also have seen - and heard - the nearby railway, which I believe, closed in 1955. Looking forward to your upcoming video's of the SVR which luckily is still with us as heritage line.

Good Morning, Ron. An excellent ‘matters a ring’ once again. I rather like Raglan castle, been round it a couple of times and always find something of interest. My back appears to have recovered, so expect it will start raining again! Oh! It’s just started raining, I’d better shut up! Take care. Ron.

Hi Ron, I think we're enjoying the same nice weather and noisy neighbours with lawnmowers. I've been fascinated by castles since I was a kid and used to watch The Adventures of Robin Hood (with Richard Greene) on TV every day when I came home from school for lunch. I was thrilled when an older neighbour outgrew his model castle and gave it to me. I tried many times to assemble it (it was in pieces for storage) but never got it to work as there was no picture to show what I was aiming for. Many years later when I passed it along to another, I realized that the pieces were from at least two different castle models, both of which had bits missing. That explained the two drawbridges. I've been finding out a lot about some Scottish cousins that I never knew about after getting an email last week from someone who also spit in a cup and got their DNA done. It's quite amazing what you can find out this way, not always good though! One more weekend away from OVM for rowing and then it's on to exams and reports...didn't I just do those? Have a good week Ron.

      @ParkinsonsWalks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi James, did the new owner manage to assemble the castle, or has it been passed on again? Pauline did the DNA thing, turns out she's a mongrel. Have you got your pass out signed by OVM? And no you didn't do the exams yet, good try. Take care of yourself. Pauline and Ron

Good evening Ron and thank you for today's vlog and film which was most enjoyable as always. Yes, Raglan castle is in my territory; I live about 7 miles away. One thing we are not short of in Wales is castles and there are around 8 or 9 just within a 25 mile radius of me! Chuck in a couple of Roman towns and Blaenavon world industrial heritage town within that distance too and you can get all the history and culture you can handle.
I'm looking forward to the SVR series starting next week. I heard back last year that they were in financial difficulties and their future was uncertain. I'm sure they are still operating and there hasn't been any further rumours, but do you or any of the PW family know different?
Have a great week Ron and, as always, best wishes to you, Pauline and the Parkinsons Walks family 🙂

Hi Trev the thing that impresses me with ancient monuments in Wales is that they look after them, not many are left to themselves. I made that film late last year, and it was going strong at the time, so hopefully ok. I guess you will be walking somewhere this bank holiday. Have fun. Pauline & Ron

    Good morning Ron!
I didn't know about the Malmesbury Branch and its radar connections. Very interesting. I used to work on ground radar systems when I was in the RAF. Talking about radar there is a new exhibition at Great Malvern Railway Station saying about Malvern's connections radar. I haven't seen it yet but it was on BBC Hereford & Worcester yesterday.
Good to hear the update from Michael - I love that about the musical seats in Warsaw and Chopin.
Amazing to hear about snow in Spain from David.
You had a beautiful blue sky when you were filming this Ron.
Yes that pipe in your Cotswold film are often marked on OS Maps as 'H. Ram'.
So sorry to hear that Moreton in Marsh Ron has put his back out now we finally have some decent weather (well on occasion dry days).
I haven't watched cinema club yet!
Hope you have a great week.
    Take care,

Just caught cinema club now - I have a vague recollection of going to Raglan Castle many moons ago but your video showed me it afresh. As you know I don't, with very rare exceptions, cover Wales on my channel, for one thing I don't speak Welsh, nor can I even attempt to pronounce the names of the people or places , and, besides which, the Westcountry is big enough to try and cover just on its own!
Great video Ron with some super accompanying music 🎶 (Vivaldi?) - what an incredible structure that really is. Thank you for the mention! Right, back to the editing... 💻 Have a super bank holiday weekend Ron and all the Parkinsons Walks family too.

I wonder what the total tonnage was of stone, iron and timber that was used to create the castle, all of which had to be hauled up the hill, worked and then lifted into place all without modern machinery. Mike.

    Hi Ron,
Thank you for the visit to the castle of course what was missing was the realistic smelly vision. Hygiene was not a priority in those days what with the latrines ending up in the moat as well as dead animals and food scraps, hoards of rats living off the produce. Washing of the body and clothes was a luxury and they preferred to mask the stink with incense and perfume oils newly imported from the east. Not volunteering but when the smell got too bad in the summer months some poor peasants would have to clean out the moat and move the effluent on to another place. Not so romantic you would think that such great builders would be able to engineer a more hygienic solution for human waste. Sorry to put a damper on all the budding lords and ladies of the castle but you would not want to sit by one when you were having dinner.

Mornin' Ron, Your on a run now, two vlogs in a row in the garden. With all that noise going on just wondering whether Trev has taken up a gardening job nearby?😆😆
Be careful not to offend the Big Siss's of the world Ron, my one lives in Wadebridge, she may not let you back into Cornwall!!
I enjoyed seeing Raglan castle again, the accompanying music is just perfect. They certainly knew how to build things back then, you have to wonder whether anything we put together these days will survive as long. Maybe all the archaeologists of the future will find are 100k subsrcibers TH-cam plaques!!
Good news at last Mum is out of hospital now and back home!!
You know it has been strangely cool down here but once this low pressure blows away we will be up into the 30°s very quickly. Over the last two weekends I have been up the mountain valleys some of the paths ford the rivers but it would be a fool who tried to do so there is a lot of flow from the melting snow.
Anyway, look forward to the SVR next week. have a great weekend
