    After spinning on a wheel for a decade, I have a a hard time with the slow progress that spindle spinning brings - even though I love spindle spinning as meditation. You inspired me to get back to my supported spindles and hit the cashmere!

    Just found your channel. Was super excited to watch this episode. I had just been sitting in the garden spinning on my Russians can you believe? 😊 I too have studied the Orenburg lace shawls. I made a small one, and it was a really sharp learning curve, but a joy to knit. I have spun cashmere in the traditional manner, only a small amount, but it was an amazing experience. Because I live in the tropics in Australia (Darwin), we don’t need thick sweaters or the like, (we average 31 Celsius all year ‘round, even in winter), but shawls are always handy in coffee shops where the air-conditioning is usually set to freezing! 🥶 🥶🥶 Thank you so much for sharing … hugs from Down Under 🥰🌴🌴🌴

      @@beccasyarns8020 Oh the cashmere was actually lovely to spin, much like camel down. I plied it with fine silk thread and made a cowl for my elderly mother. She wore it to death until she moved up to the tropics to live with us … 😁

    Wow, Becca, this is a masterpiece indeed. Something you can wear for a lifetime. Pieces like that are heirloom pieces, that can be passed down, that`s how sturdy and high quality they are. Oh, Becca! This is STUNNING! And you got a chance to do so many fiber things all in one project - knitting, crochet and embroidery! Too cool. I think I already follow her over there, but I'll double check to make sure I am. This is 1,000 times out of my depth, but I can appreciate just extraordinary the work is. I am in the midst of crocheting a pair of slippers. The pattern isn't available any longer so I'm trying to go by the pictures, only, to recreate them. I got hopelessly lost on my lace knitting, but just frogged it yesterday, so I'm anxious to start over and conquer! And thank you for showing your fuzzy helper during the button portion! Such a cutie! Love & hugs

      Thank you, thank you, LadyValkyri! It was cool to get to do all of those crafts in one object. I don't usually mix and match like that, but this has inspired me. Good luck with the slipper re-creation! That sounds like it might be tricky to do just from pictures. Sometimes frogging and starting over is the best option. I know you will get that lace knitting down this time! And Freyja (the fuzzy helper) says, "thank you!" :) Hugs to you, friend!

    Hi! I found your video a little late. I love your wheels! I think by switching to a saxony wheel that has the flyer on the right side you can spin with a double treddle very comfortably! I used to have a Kromski but for this reason I switched to a right side flyer wheel and that made all the difference. I wish Kromski would add this option!

    • @beccasyarns8020
      @beccasyarns8020 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! It's a magical experience, really. You can't tell from the video, but my grip on the fiber is very loose when I'm drafting. It has just enough twist to keep the fibers from falling apart. Then when I spin the wheel faster, I'm putting in the twist to lock it in place and I test to see if there is enough twist by pulling back slightly on the yarn. Happy spinning!

    I like the idea of something holding my fibers back, but a distaff like this one is just too big for me to hold and spin. Cool idea to replicate how they did it centuries ago tho

    • @beccasyarns8020
      @beccasyarns8020 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment! There are a lot of different styles of distaff, from those that are integrated into spinning wheels, to those that get tucked into a belt, and some that you even sit on. I have a Roman style ring distaff made of blown glass that you might like - it's much smaller than this one. It does help a lot to have a distaff or something to hold your fiber. Sometimes if my hands are a bit sweaty, the fibers will get felted a little as I spin. That's no fun, for sure. Happy spinning!

    Hi, Becca! Good to see you! I have a little bit of experience with wood, and one thing you may wish to try to get the round piece back into shape (couldn't hurt to try!) is using a damp cloth and an iron on the steam setting. Cover the wood with the cloth and iron the wood, hitting it with stream once or twice. This expands the wood fibers and may just be enough of a temporary fix to have the connecting piece make contact again. Repeat this process as necessary until the desired shape is achieved. Depending on the finish it may not look pristine, but it may just work, so function over beauty, in this case! I loved seeing how to wind by hand using the two fingers. Makes sense and it never even occurred to me! Great job on your FO & WIP! Hugs, always.

    Thanks for this great video and sharing your tips. One of my favorite spinning things is my hand steamer. I set it on the table with steam and run my braids from end to end 2x. I then open the fiber from the back seam and it’s such a smooth fiber to draft and spin. I originally bought it to steam block my garment. Now as a spinner, fiber prep tool.

      Thank you so much! On my first ever steeking project I was super nervous, so I knitted up a test swatch in stranded knitting in the round with steek stitches. It was only four or five inches long. Then I did my first practice steek on that and I could see how the wool (it works best with wool since it likes to stick to itself) acted after it was cut. It really helped me feel more comfortable before cutting into my big project. Good luck!

      When I lived in England, I loved that you could buy wool yarn at the department store. I was amazed walking in to the same place where people bought kitchen goods and clothing and they had a huge section for crafts and sewing. I don't know if it's still that way, but that hasn't been the case in the US for a long time - our crafts and sewing have become specialty items. I hope that the company decides to release this yarn for sale everywhere soon and you can try it! Happy crafting to you in England!

      Red heart is available on Amazon UK! I’m not sure if this specific yarn is being sold but it will most likely be added soon if not

    A comprehensive study. Thankyou. Having found out the hard way, I would suggest you are very careful about putting soft fleece ie BFL/Shetland through the picker. It can tear staples to shreds. You have a lovely podcast😊

      How was the yarn to work with? Did you have any issues with keeping consistent tension or not having enough of each colour to complete rows? That seems to be a common complaint so I’m still unsure if I want to purchase it.

    Hi, it was nice to see hownyou carded the wool, dressed your distaff and used your Turkish spindle. However, how did you wrap the yarn on your spindle? I have learned it goes 'under two, over one' or the other way, but it looked like you went 'over one, under one'. Does that work too? And I had to turn the sound off - that really hurt my ears. So I may have missed a lot of your teaching because of that, which is a shame...

    • @beccasyarns8020
      @beccasyarns8020 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Thank you for your comment. I'm sorry the sound was a problem for you. I wrap over one under two, as your keen eye spotted. It seems to work out the same, except that the 'turtle' is upside down. :) Maybe it depends on the spindle and the shape/length of the arms and shaft? Happy spinning!

    Thank you for this one, Becca! I'm not a granny square fan, and probably wouldn't buy this for granny squares because of how finicky it is... HOWEVER, that 1960's very vibrant one with the white is so cool! I'm wondering how it would work up with just doing regular projects, and how each of the different stitches would effect the patterns it will make. You gave me some ideas! Hugs!

      I'm glad you liked it! I am also wondering how the yarn repeats would work if you just did plain stitches rather than granny squares. You would have progressively longer color blocks and then repeat shorter again. That might be really cool! The 1960's one reminds me of vinyl flower stickers that my sister made and put on EVERYTHING she owned lol. I then inherited a bunch of lovely, bright decorated things from her, so this reminds me of my childhood. Hugs to you!

    A happy, healthy & prosperous New Year to us all. I don't want to count my chickens, but my daughter and her fiancee MAY have bought me a 3-D printed wheel from Good & Basic this year. My first mechanical wheel, as opposed to my drop spindles & larger Navajo style one. Between my arthritis and depression, these methods are so slow. It may be a game changer, completely. We'll see. Love ya lots. Hugs!

    That distaff says to me that that wheel was originally intended for spinning flax (although I may well be wrong, distaffs can also be used with wool or any fibre you like). Do you have any plans to try spinning flax on it?

    • @beccasyarns8020
      @beccasyarns8020 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it is a flax wheel, too. Most of my older ones are. I don't have a lot of experience with flax, but I do want to try it again. I had some flax very early on when I was learning to spin and found it very difficult. I ended up blending the flax into a batt with other fibers on a drum carder and was able to spin it that way. I also have some hemp that I was spinning up with another of my wheels. I might have some of that fiber left. Perhaps that will be something I take on in the next year. Thank you for your comment!

    Have a blessed Christmas and wonderful new year my friend. I love those Indio jumpers / poncho style garmetns. Used to wear them in the eighties a lot. The sweater your are wearing is devine. I am currently working on another Ankers Summer Blouse, by Petite Knit. But I am knitting a winter version. I also started working on a vintage embroidery kit. My grandmother taught me to knit as a young girl and then in my teens I picked up a how to knit book to continue my skill, both taught me to throw my yarn. This past year I decided to learn how to knit continental style. Like you I decided I needed a large project to commit the style to muscle memory… so I knitted a 4 foot long stocking cap for my 5 year old. He absolutely loves the hat and now I’m fairly proficient with my left hand. I’m currently knitting a lace top in left hand. My next goal is to work towards balancing my gauge between the two different styles so that I can use them interchangeably. If I’m knitting to relax I still prefer right hand knitting as that has been my go to for a very long time.

      Thank you for sharing your story! The 4 foot long stocking cap sounds great, especially on a 5 year old. :) Being able to go from one to the other without a noticeable difference is not something I have mastered. What an excellent goal. Best of luck to you!

    Hi I just started spinning and I have this exact spinning wheel! This is a Longshot but do you know how I would be able to get another bobbin for this wheel? Mine only came with one

    • @beccasyarns8020
      @beccasyarns8020 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! My wheel also only came with one bobbin. For the first year, I would spin up the singles and then wind them onto other bobbins that I had to ply them. That took a lot of extra time and effort, but it did work. I got extra bobbins made for all of my old wheels from Alan and Melissa Dewey of Bobbin Boy. You can find them on Facebook. They do really excellent work. You need to send the original since they duplicate it exactly, so that means a while with no bobbin, but I think it's definitely worth the wait!

    • @laenibernier9851
      @laenibernier9851 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @beccasyarns8020 how would you wind them on other bobbins? By hand? I'm very new I've only been spinning for 1.5 weeks 😅

    • @resourcedragon
      @resourcedragon 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@laenibernier9851: It's not romantic but apparently there is an attachment you can get for electric drills that does the job in a trice. (It's demonstrated at one point on JillianEve's channel.) Alternatively, you can do like I did, put the bobbins on a Lazy Kate (mine is an untensioned Ashford, where the bobbins are held horizontally) and just spin away - it's not I think what you are "supposed" to do but it worked (and it didn't alter the amount of twist in the yarn). You could even try inserting a suitable pencil or dowel into the bobbin you want to wind onto and just spin that.

    It's good to see you again! The blouse is lovely! When I moved away from knitting and started to crochet, I was a thrower. About 15 years have elapsed and I have forgotten much of what I knew back then, as I was a very beginner when I stopped. I'd like to resume my knitting journey, and will probably throw when I pick the needles back up, but I've found there to be many more tutorials for Continental. To which I say "Pbbbt." It's interesting that your gauge changes, but since they are very different hand motions, it makes sense. I really love the red autumn shawl the best, visually. It's is striking! Lots of love, many hugs, always.
