- In this video, I share a work in progress that has been several years in the making. A one-day heirloom lace shawl in the Orenburg style with hand spun lace weight yarn spun on a Russian spindle! Come along and hear the story and spin awhile with me. Listen to those cicadas!

I loved the cicadas and the spinning demonstration. Thank you for the video! 👍🏻
I love them, too. :) Glad you enjoyed the video!
I loved watching spindle spinning. I can do it, but still need more practice!
Thank you! I hope you can find time to work this skill into your crafting.
After spinning on a wheel for a decade, I have a a hard time with the slow progress that spindle spinning brings - even though I love spindle spinning as meditation. You inspired me to get back to my supported spindles and hit the cashmere!
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your meditation and slow practice. :)
Just found your channel. Was super excited to watch this episode. I had just been sitting in the garden spinning on my Russians can you believe? 😊 I too have studied the Orenburg lace shawls. I made a small one, and it was a really sharp learning curve, but a joy to knit. I have spun cashmere in the traditional manner, only a small amount, but it was an amazing experience. Because I live in the tropics in Australia (Darwin), we don’t need thick sweaters or the like, (we average 31 Celsius all year ‘round, even in winter), but shawls are always handy in coffee shops where the air-conditioning is usually set to freezing! 🥶 🥶🥶 Thank you so much for sharing … hugs from Down Under 🥰🌴🌴🌴
Welcome! Thank you for sharing! What a lovely connection with you and I both spinning on our Russian spindles. I'm curious how you found the cashmere alone to spin. Was it easy or hard? Hugs from steamy Kansas! :)
@@beccasyarns8020 Oh the cashmere was actually lovely to spin, much like camel down. I plied it with fine silk thread and made a cowl for my elderly mother. She wore it to death until she moved up to the tropics to live with us … 😁
A really enjoyable video. Thankyou so much. Your shawl will be amazing. I’ve noticed when fibre is dyed the circumference thickens very slightly. Maybe bleaching the Yak has the same result?
I'll bet it was the bleaching that affected the fibre. Good thinking! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching!
What prep are you using for your spin? I'm spinning for a shetland shawl, and its hard to find info for spinning gossamer as it is, so I'm using orenburg stuff for reference 🙃I'm spinning something like a 50/2 pretty consistently, but its slow going with roving [edit: ah nvm I see you're using roving. I guess my problem is park and draft then oops]
I wonder if the difference between the bleached and unbleached yarns have to do with blooming after wash, and how bleaching alters the protein structure of the fiber? yarns can be spun the exact same and end up with similar wpis and still look heavier than the other because of bloom 🤔
