  • Come have a cozy spin with me on my 1945 Ukrainian Castle spinning wheel! In this episode I share a new spinning and knitting project I have in the works as well as updates on some works in progress.
    The One Ring Scarf Knit-a-Long
This winter, I am making the One Ring Scarf - a double knitting project that I expect will be quite an adventure - and I hope that you will join me! If you are not interested in making the One Ring Scarf, but would still like to join, any double knitting project will do. If you are on Ravelry, you can join the One Ring Scarf Along group, link below, and you can also use the tag #oneringscarf on both Instagram and Raverly to share your projects.

It's my first time seeing your channel, and I love everything about it! Your spinning and knitting are gorgeous, and you speak and present clearly and well. Thank you so much for sharing!
That's a beautiful wheel you bought, and a very picturesque spinning spot. Scritches for your furbabies!
    Happy New Year!

Hi, Rebecca, I'm Valeri, a new subscriber. I have only spun with a drop spindle, and I'm very new to that. I have knitted, but it's been about 20 years. I mostly crochet. Everything is so beautiful! The wheel, the yarn, the critters, the work, just beautiful. I loved this video. Hugs

Hi Valeri! So glad to have you here! Thank you for your lovely comments. I also spin with a spindle, mostly I use the grasped technique where I hold the spindle in my right hand and don't really let it suspend from the thread. I started with crochet. I had a friend who taught me the basics and another who taught me how to read a pattern. I love the structural qualities of crochet and also the ease of making a fabric that is the same on both sides. Hugs to you!

Hi! I’ve been spinning for more than 40 years and I’ve had lots of wheels. I have always heard that to be an antique. It has to be 100 years old or more. Anything less is vintage. I have a Canadian production wheel from the 1800s that is definitely antique. 😊

Glad to meet another person who loves old spinning wheels! I had always thought the definition of antique was 60 years...but maybe that was only for cars. Your Canadian production wheel sounds wonderful. Vintage or antique, I'm so glad that these fabulous machines are getting the love they deserve. Happy spinning!

Yes 100 years is standard as a defining feature for antique wheels. The vintage category has a lot of merit for a wheel that functions well. The provenance isn't as important as how a restoration is carried out, function. Edit to add that 1945 is a strange date for a Ukrainian wheel - WW2 for new wheels is later than I understood. It could be older as well but that's a Sleuth's investigation.

Hi Becca!! I, too, am a new subscriber here! I especially loved watching you spin! I am a new spinner having knit & crocheted for years! I am wonder why you dip your left hand down (& around?) to let it go onto the bobbin. I’ve never seen that technique before. Could you explain please? Your sweaters are beautiful, esp the one you were wearing while spinning! Best wishes in 2023!!! 🎉

Welcome Linda! Thank you for joining us and thank you for your nice words! I am using a long backward draw technique which is used for woolen spun yarn. It's loftier and I find it very relaxing to spin this way. I pull my left hand back and let the twist run up the length. If I need to adjust any thick sections, I control that with my right hand. When there is enough twist in the thread, I can feel the tension change with my left hand. Then I bring it to the center of the orifice (the dip) and guide it onto the bobbin with my right hand. That was a little difficult to see in the video. This wheel is a little finicky with wanting to pull the yarn in rather than accumulate more twist, so I have to give it more encouragement. The tension is set with the little knob on the top of the rear maiden. I think I don't set it very tightly so that I can manage the twist rather than have it just pull straight on. Best of luck with your spinning, and Happy New Year to you!

That distaff says to me that that wheel was originally intended for spinning flax (although I may well be wrong, distaffs can also be used with wool or any fibre you like). Do you have any plans to try spinning flax on it?

I think it is a flax wheel, too. Most of my older ones are. I don't have a lot of experience with flax, but I do want to try it again. I had some flax very early on when I was learning to spin and found it very difficult. I ended up blending the flax into a batt with other fibers on a drum carder and was able to spin it that way. I also have some hemp that I was spinning up with another of my wheels. I might have some of that fiber left. Perhaps that will be something I take on in the next year. Thank you for your comment!

Hi I just started spinning and I have this exact spinning wheel! This is a Longshot but do you know how I would be able to get another bobbin for this wheel? Mine only came with one

    • @beccasyarns8020
      @beccasyarns8020  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi! My wheel also only came with one bobbin. For the first year, I would spin up the singles and then wind them onto other bobbins that I had to ply them. That took a lot of extra time and effort, but it did work. I got extra bobbins made for all of my old wheels from Alan and Melissa Dewey of Bobbin Boy. You can find them on Facebook. They do really excellent work. You need to send the original since they duplicate it exactly, so that means a while with no bobbin, but I think it's definitely worth the wait!

@beccasyarns8020 how would you wind them on other bobbins? By hand? I'm very new I've only been spinning for 1.5 weeks 😅

@@laenibernier9851: It's not romantic but apparently there is an attachment you can get for electric drills that does the job in a trice. (It's demonstrated at one point on JillianEve's channel.) Alternatively, you can do like I did, put the bobbins on a Lazy Kate (mine is an untensioned Ashford, where the bobbins are held horizontally) and just spin away - it's not I think what you are "supposed" to do but it worked (and it didn't alter the amount of twist in the yarn).
You could even try inserting a suitable pencil or dowel into the bobbin you want to wind onto and just spin that.

I don't like, that something that was made only 13 years before I was born is called 'Antique' :(
I also see things from my childhood in historical museums. The world is a mess!!!!
