- In this video, I share my experience working with the whole fleece from a Soay sheep. This is an ancient breed of small, dark brown sheep originating on the island of Soay near the UK. I start with a dirty, unwashed raw fleece and go through scouring, picking, carding, and spinning, and share my thoughts on the process and results. It was quite an adventure!

Wow, that was a lot of work Becca. And it was a great learning experience too. Maybe you could felt with the fleece. That would make awesome slippers or houseshoes. You could felt some into soles to put into shoes or even knitted house socks. I do that all the time. If not wet felting, you could needle felt some of it to make nice decorations for the house or make gifts. The biggest felted object I ever saw, during my textile studies at University, was a sofa! It was incredible and looked like a big rock. They had used grey and white fleece to felt it.
Ooh - I hadn't thought of felting it! I'll have to try that and see how it works out. A felted sofa would be very luxurious lol. Thank you for your wonderful ideas, as always. Hugs, friend!

The red & brown look absolutely fabulous together! The sweater is beautiful, and the Gotland is chef's kiss * perfection! I can't remember if you have a loom or not. If you do, perhaps a rug for a patio or deck with the Soay? Thank you for the scouring info, too. I didn't realize the water should be that hot. The advice is very much appreciated, and hopefully I can put that info to use someday. Your hubby did good! Much love, many hugs, always.
Thank you LadyValkyri! I do have a loom - the idea of a rug is a good one. :) Hugs to you, my friend!
A comprehensive study. Thankyou. Having found out the hard way, I would suggest you are very careful about putting soft fleece ie BFL/Shetland through the picker. It can tear staples to shreds. You have a lovely podcast😊
Thank you for the tip! I would have made that mistake for sure. I will be more careful with the soft fleece. :)
You should try combing the Soay fleece. The guard hairs will come out during combing. Good luck
Thanks for the tip! I will have to try that.
I've tried this. Comes out nice and fluffy but very time consuming and a lot of waste. Guard hairs not such a problem with the soay fleece I've got, but lots of thistles and skin flakes that won't wash out.
