A happy, healthy & prosperous New Year to us all. I don't want to count my chickens, but my daughter and her fiancee MAY have bought me a 3-D printed wheel from Good & Basic this year. My first mechanical wheel, as opposed to my drop spindles & larger Navajo style one. Between my arthritis and depression, these methods are so slow. It may be a game changer, completely. We'll see. Love ya lots. Hugs!
This is so wonderful. I love that you are recreating craft practices that our forefather/mothers used in the past eras. This a deep passion of mine. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful wonderful piece of the past in this ultra modern world. 💚 Irish blessings
Well how funny is this? I just found you today. It's ROC day and you are talking about and using your distaff! What a strange occurence huh? Thank you!
I would so love to se a how to video on how you are doing the clasped in hand spinning like you are showing with the Turkish spindle. I have been trying to to figure out the clasped in hand spinning for awhile now and it just baffles me.
I like the idea of something holding my fibers back, but a distaff like this one is just too big for me to hold and spin. Cool idea to replicate how they did it centuries ago tho
Thank you for your comment! There are a lot of different styles of distaff, from those that are integrated into spinning wheels, to those that get tucked into a belt, and some that you even sit on. I have a Roman style ring distaff made of blown glass that you might like - it's much smaller than this one. It does help a lot to have a distaff or something to hold your fiber. Sometimes if my hands are a bit sweaty, the fibers will get felted a little as I spin. That's no fun, for sure. Happy spinning!
Hi, it was nice to see hownyou carded the wool, dressed your distaff and used your Turkish spindle. However, how did you wrap the yarn on your spindle? I have learned it goes 'under two, over one' or the other way, but it looked like you went 'over one, under one'. Does that work too? And I had to turn the sound off - that really hurt my ears. So I may have missed a lot of your teaching because of that, which is a shame...
Hi! Thank you for your comment. I'm sorry the sound was a problem for you. I wrap over one under two, as your keen eye spotted. It seems to work out the same, except that the 'turtle' is upside down. :) Maybe it depends on the spindle and the shape/length of the arms and shaft? Happy spinning!

How wonderful! Happy ROC day to you!
I plan to spin enough natural breed study fibre to knit myself a hat and maybe a shawl
That sounds wonderful! Happy spinning!

Thank you for your comment! I'll see if I can get some good illustrative footage of the technique.
