Rescuing the garlic from rain (and strawberry jam) #106
Almost every day brings fresh rain around here at the moment. Many days, we are forced to work around the weather--and take breaks when it rains. Or we ignore the weather and go to the garden anyway. On a rainy day, we made strawberry jam, then rescued the garlic from the non-stop rain by harvesting it and sorting it in my living room.

Finally planting the greenhouse #105
มุมมอง 79312 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The garden was weeks behind, so I spent every free minute catching up. Every gap in the weather was spent in and around my beds. Everything was a rescue mission against clocks set by weather and wind. When it rained, I turned the tops of the onion I'd harvested into green onion pesto and planted the greenhouse. This time, I plant a lot more sunflowers, harvest onions in the rain, move a lot of water into storage, and start a new bed for the corn oh, yes, and I planted some beans. One year restoring neglected land #100

    Here in the upper midwest U.S. we have been getting double and triple the normal rainfall. Last year it was drought and my garden performed poorly. This year I have to hope my potatoes aren't rotting underground. On the plus side, my grass has never looked greener and my new River Birch tree is thriving! Thank you for your videos. You are making great progress. The scythe is a tough thing to get going safely but our ancestors used them exclusively before motorized machines. My dad always used a “weedwhacker”. A blade on a stick but smaller than a scythe blade. I still have his in my garage. I need to get it out and give it a whirl. Onions and potatoes harvests are great and free potatoes! Great job with your TH-cam.

      I got a really nice old scythe from an elderly neighbor who no longer needs it. It has a very long blade and works great. I really enjoy working with that. A few TH-cam videos and some patience later, and I can actually mow the lawn with the thing. I have already added a bushwhacker blade to my wish list. I was so surprised when I realized it had been a year already. Right now, the year or two until we leave does not sound as long. Thank you so much 🙂

    Amazing! You have accomplished so much- even with one hurt paw! So proud of you. Great vlog. I built a 8x8 polycarbonate greenhouse using duct tape to hold pieces until I could secure them. It was nuts!

    Why will you move after 2 years?

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We moved back to Germany during the pandemic. I decided to finish my degrees here. Neither of us wants to live in Germany, and the area here is especially unsuitable. I finish my degree in a year.

      Thank you! And thank you for watching the premiere with me. I saw your comment at the very end but could not respond because TH-cam closed the chat. I am so happy to hear you are enjoying my videos. :)

    Wow, you did fantastic !! I’m sure you have a lot of work to do. ,I live in the city with the house that’s 1925 and there’s always work to be done. We have hurricanes here in Texas so we’re getting a trim trimmed today. It’s massive, but if that tree comes down, it’ll ruin the house so we’re working on that today and in two weeks I will get my house leveled again. It needs to be leveled, it’s always something., but you’ve done fantastic that dance is perfect🎊🎉🎊🎉 🏠

      Oh yes, always something to be done. Good luck with the house!

      As family booked the apartments, it was not an option. The area is very dog-friendly, though, so we would definitely book our own place and take him next time. He stayed with neighbors 🙂

      Thank you! Hopefully, they all survived the rain storms of the last days. A lot of water in little time.

    Just a small point - the plant you were eating is Borage, not comfrey, though Borage is also edible.

      @RootsandCalluses 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, true that. I mixed up the name as I first learned about this one in German. Hence the "Borretsch" before my correction to the wrong English term 🤣

      Fun fact: apparently, comfrey is in the borage family. Interesting.

    A couple years ago I had to leave the garden and vegetable seedlings for about 10 days in May. Results were 50:50 when I got back. May yours be better!

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you will :) I was able to film a lot more than I had anticipated and my husband actively helped create some footage, so there will be an episode about it. Next week, I'll have my 100th episode which will be a year in review but the one after that (#101) is all about the vacation.

      Hello, Kate. Is that your name. I’m enjoying your garden, it takes lots of energy and dedication to have a decent garden, you have both. I’m planting new strawberry plants today, the old strawberry bed was invaded by slugs and I couldn’t keep them out. My new plants will go into stackable pots, hope it works. ❤
