- Spring is slowly arriving in North-East Germany. This year, I want to grow a lot of food. Right now, it's all weeds and grass. There are a few ways I want to try making these beds. This one, I'll weed by hand. But I'll also try traditional Irish beds and weeding with sheep and goats.

I’ve been in the same garden for 14 years. I no till. Saves me so much work once a bed is established.- thank you for sharing your knowledge and philosophy. It’s so important these days to hear a message about what we can do to lighten our impact.
I hope to be in a garden for that long at some point, though I really hope it won't be this one, as that would mean I'll still be here in this area I dislike so much. But once we've found a place we enjoy, I can't wait to think longer-term, as well.
I am up in Denmark, and we do the back to Eden method, to deal with weeds and improving soil health at the same time, it has saved us so much time, and made gardening and self-sufficiency easy to do.
I will be covering all my soil. Mulching will definitely be the norm 🙂 But I cannot get woodchips delivered, so it is a bit more time consuming.
@@RootsandCalluses yes, here wood chips and mulch are so expensive, so I mow our grass on our field when it is 20-30 centimetres let it dry for a bit and fill our vegetable and berry gardens with it so the amount of wood chips and mulch I need is much less than before. We have a 15.000 m2 piece of land, including our house and garage, so we have plenty of space to do a lot. I found it difficult where we lived before as it was a tiny garden with barely any sun due to the neighbouring houses shading our previous garden.
I am scavenging mulch material from all the neighbors. Grass clippings are one of those things I'll use.
Hello from Florida USA love your videos
Thank you for being here :)
Hi Kate. Watching your video reminded me of "Lasagna gardening ". I plan on doing it atop my raised beds this year. Its fun seeing you in the garden after a long winter. Thank you for so many videos lately! 🙂
Oh, yeah, I've heard of that before. It seems similar to the Hugelkultur I am so obsessed with. I am glad you are enjoying my time in the garden. I definitely did :)
Hooray, you’re making more progress on your journey to growing your own food. I bet it felt great to be working on that first bed. I can’t wait to watch the rest of your journey and see your harvest. You did a great job with kindly teaching about soil health and all that lives in the soil ecosystem. I find it fascinating and have loved learning all about it.
@Julie-H it felt amazing to finally get started. I can't wait for the first things to grow.
Hello I love your video
Thanks for being here!
Hi Kate, do you have a new camera? The clarity and colour of this video is truly amazing! Funny to see Pepper's backside at the beginning. Isn't he so cute! At first glance, I thought the purple pansies were violas, but on close inspection it looks like they have 3 or 4 petals pointing upwards. Forgive my scrutiny, it's just because of my scientific nature. You're absolutely right about tilling. Soil tillage greatly affects earthworms and, as you say, it also destroys our invisible allies - microbes. Over the last few years, since encountering Charles Dowding on TH-cam, I've been a no-dig gardener. Take care and happy gardening! 😀
No, not yet. I am still filming with the GoPro and my iPhone 14. But they both do better with more light. It was a very dark winter.
Please, do correct me if I ever misname something. I, too, am a scientist. I'm right there with you :)
I can't do the way he does no dig, as I can't bring in any extra soil from external sources. So, I have to use what's on hand. Instead of the no-dig where you throw soil on top, I will mulch heavily and rely on minimally invasive weeding.
Interesting to watch and listen to....
Thank you Steven! :)
Hello from Montana, your pup is so sweet, I love how he wants to be very close to you, happy weeding❤😊
Thanks! it can be a bit of a hassle but it is also why I love him so much.
Pests are only pests to those who let it bother them!
I think there is a point where they bother most people ;)
