  • It's time to tackle that indoor list. Our living room has been an absolute mess, so I'm building a storage bench for the hallway. I also deal with about 50 eggs from the garden neighbor, and use the egg cartons for my potatoes.

    I find your positive attitude about what you create, and the way you accept things being less than perfect, really inspiring, because I’m so worried about getting things wrong that I find it hard to start in the first place. I want to learn to love my failures like you do.

      The fear of failure still often makes it hard to start. But I am learning 🙂 Thank you so much for the kind words!

    I’m always amazed by potatoes. I actually don’t remember the last potato I ate. Very satisfying to dig them up, as I recall. ❤

      We eat a lot of potatoes. We both grew up in Germany where they are a huge staple.

    Your puppy makes me laugh. He was watching so hard for you to drop some of your meat balls. Puppies also like eggs. My pup sure likes them. Have a wonderful day. Happy planting.

      Pepper got an egg just a few days ago. He is a big fan. You know what's worse: he knows which foods are most likely to make a mess. For meatballs, he is right there, though, despite the low likelihood of me dropping anything.

    Foraged some garlic-mustard today; it smelled so sharp! I've got it soaking, and plan to add it into other greens because of its punch. It makes the soil inhospitable to other native plants so its best to pull it anyway. I adored meeting so many tiny snails (I tucked them and their chosen leaves back into the damp, cool parts under the leaf litter; I did not know they ate the spicy mustard!) and wanted to make a terrarium but I do not have anywhere safe for it inside. I know it would be somewhat involved but what about a few salt cured yolks? You shave them on dishes you want extra umami like truffles or hard cheese. It makes simple dishes feel fancy and lush. Storage benches and trunks are so handy.
    Thank you for letting us hang out with you

      I have never tried salt-cured eggs. It does sound fancy. Thank you for the recommendation.
      I am a big fan of snails since I took a class on how to identify the local ones. I got sick after the first week and had to do an alternative assignment which had me searching for snails all over the area. It was great. But with the very wet mild winter we just had, we think there will be a lot around everywhere. We will see if I still like them after they eat my produce 😉

    The seedlings on your balcony are looking strong and, obviously, survived the recent cold snap. I love meatballs too. The Italians make the best ones with mixed ground beef and pork together with herbs and Parmesan cheese. While you made meatballs, I spotted Pepper under the counter gazing longingly for a scrap of food :) Isn't he a real sweetie! What varieties of seed potatoes are you growing? For me, it's Charlotte, Maris Piper and Pink Fir Apple. All best wishes!

      I really enjoy the smaller Swedish meatballs as well. But the Italian ones are delicious, I agree. Pepper definitely agrees with us, too 😉
      I only remember that I have a king and a queen in my potatoes. I will make sure to tell you in the planting video when I can look at the little labels.

    Hi Kate! Happy to see your doing well! I have fallen behind in watching your videos, busy time planting here too,so trying to get a few in today. Your bench looks great and your talking about not always having the tools you need reminded me of something that happened to me when I was in my late 20's. The only tool I owned was a screwdriver that had all the bits in the handle. I needed a saw to cut a dowel into smaller pieces,so I used a serrated steak knife lol 😆 Needless to say it took forever and the edges were not straight but it did the trick in a pinch. Good to see you and have a great night! 🙂

      Thanks Rose :) I hope you enjoy catching up on the videos. You can always skip a few.
      A serrated knife definitely wasn't the right tool. It also increased the risk of getting yourself hurt. But I have definitely been there, and made the same wrong decision to use the wrong tool. Glad it worked out for you!
      Who cares about straight edges ;)

    May I ask why you wash your eggs? Fresh eggs have a special Coating on them called a “bloom”. It protects the egg and does not require you to refrigerate them. (Unless you wash them then they require refrigeration) They can last for at Least 3 weeks on the counter, room temperature if not washed. Also storing them “pointy” side down is better as eggs have a little pocket of bacteria at the round end so pointy end down lessens the risk of more bacteria.

      Because the garden neighbor had some trouble with dirty eggs and most of them were covered in poop. I don't wash them usually. But these were not in a shape I would allow in my kitchen--and I am not picky 😉 I will have to research the thing with the pointy side. I know there is an air pocket there but will now need to know why that means the pointy side should go down. Thanks!

    Did you say you make hard boiled eggs in you airfryer? Are they easy to peel?
    I've been busy getting my own garden together. Early last week I planted potatoes, beets, radish, onion and spring garlic. Wouldn't you know it, we get an unexpected blast of cold through the weekend and the stupid squirrels have been digging up my beets and turnips!! Crazy!! Be well from Canada 🇨🇦

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, we do. Just place them in the basket. 135 C for 14 minutes, then immediately run them under cold water. They are usually easy to peel.
      Sorry to hear about your little seedlings. Have you been able to salvage some of the root veggies? Did the rest survive the cold?

      @@RootsandCalluses They are all still pretty small. But after closer inspection, I they didn't get as many as I feared. I've put in some preventative measure to help keep them away. Be well from Canada 🇨🇦

    Are you able to drill holes first before screwing in the screws? Do you have drill attachments for your tool?
    Looks like everything is coming along well.

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I am. But because this is very soft wood, this would have made the screws a lot less effective, so I chose not to. I should have just used screws that don't tear when you look at them 🤣
