Love Physical Media and collecting ? This is the place to be.
Discussions on movies / TV and collecting and covering the areas that others don't. The dark side of collecting. The addiction. The hoarding etc.
Also delving in to my life as an actor from time to time.
Why am I doing this ?
I want to learn.
I'm an actor (find out more about this on my social links!) and voice over artist who wants to build knowledge in software and equipment being used for creating and have the freedom to potentially make my own 'stuff'.
So, i've started this TH-cam channel to hold myself accountable in a way and force myself to learn through doing...
So, subscribe if you want to follow my journey .
Feel free to drop a comment and join the conversation.
Fair warning... You may find the occasional video slightly off topic as I'm trying new things but movies focus will remain.

@@kermitsghost I do indeed cherish the times. Even thinking about getting him involved for another video. Think he might chat about the state of Star Wars between the movies and (some) of the tv shows. He was well rewarded for good behaviour ! Have a merry Christmas x
Awesome video, well done mates and merry Christmas!

@@lp7399 Merry Christmas. Hope you have a nice break lined up ? Take care and speak to you very soon ✌🏼
Love it. My nine year old also had no clue what a cd was until a few months ago. At first I couldn’t believe it but then it dawned on me that she’s never had a reason to see a disc of a movie or song etc as she has access to everything on streaming apps!
@@mikee1985 exactly. I bet he didn’t even know we had the Star Wars stuff on disc. Did like chatting to him about what he thinks about some things. Found it interesting what he pulled from the sonic 3 story threads.
Fantastic!! He definitely needs the skateboard. I show them on my channel occasionally as I still ride and I'm 55 yrs old. :-) Maybe he will want you to help him make his own TH-cam channel!!❤❤❤
@@WorldMoneyWins glad you enjoyed it. He is becoming more and more interested in me doing video. Who knows, he might think about something he wants to talk about on videos. He already wants access to simple editing software 😂
Couldnt get through the trailer of Carry-On it seemed like a mostly one set, rip-off of the film Phone Booth with the customs man unable to leave his desk like Colin Farrell couldnt leave the Phone Booth.
@@alexpattison6448 oh there’s some getting up and moving around. Not that it makes it any better 🤷🏼♂️ but, my wife enjoyed it. I’m sure there are others out there that did too. Just not one that I can personally recommend (as you probably guessed)
@PhillwithadoubleL Glad to hear your wife enjoyed it at least. 👍
@ just need to explain to her why she’s wrong 😂
@@PhillwithadoubleL 🤣👍 In my experience Netflix films are more miss than hit the last one I enjoyed was The Killer with Michael Fassbender.
It’s going to be a pretty hectic two days getting ready for Christmas 🎄 while at same time I’m waiting for that Watership down box set from BFI which was released in the US about a month ago.Don’t be surprised if Santa slips some lumps of coal for this time (JUST KIDDING 😅😂🤣)Well you have a great Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 take care cheers 👋😘
Powerhouse Indicator has just brought out the "Columbia Horror box set on blu ray. Its now nice to see public domain films like Cry of the Werewolf 1944 on blu ray.
What about Hammers new film "Doctor Jekyll 2023" Its on my watch pile.
@@stuartobrien78 not one I’ve been keeping an eye out for. Fee other things that are taking priority for viewing at the moment.
Problem Child 1&2 so what if it's coming to 4K,some go direct to Blu-Ray from the 80s!!!
And I never ever buy movies by Director, I buy it for the movie script, don't get these people who must buy a Directors works, like Why?
I liked Nancy Drew and the hidden staircase.
At 1.13,Not really a fan of his, but I own one that was recommended
Regarding John Woo movies, it depends if Arrow want to get into these movies.
At 54.40,why are you following others, no point in buying stuff just to conform, better to be individual.
@@iloveblue7920 because… I was young and bullied and stuck out like a sore thumb because of my height… I wanted to fit in. I needed something to feel normal. I don’t want to deep dive into the baggage that I had but I felt I needed something at the time to be ‘a normal boy’. I just needed something that others could relate to or chat around rather than it being the thing about me that stuck out (my height). As a young man I struggled to find my place. I didn’t need other things that made me even more ‘different’
Franchises, Not really a Marvel Fan at all, I own The Eternals on 4ksteelbook and Black Widow 4K Steelbook, not really a DC fan.
Marvel I was into at a point, they’ve just fallen off a bit for me recently. DC is patchy, particularly over the last few years. Big fan of the Reeves Superman movies though (a little nostalgia leading the way for that)
OOP titles, Only buy them if you like them, otherwise waste of Money.
Absolutely agree. The scalpers are out there ripping money out of your hand if you’re feeling desperate. When a Blu Ray is OOP, generally I’ll just look back towards a standard edition or a previous DVD release. Sometimes a DVD is enough to quench that thirst
The Keep was never on Blu-Ray, dunno why you thought otherwise, I got a DVD of it at a great price!!
A simple mix up 🤷🏼♂️
Baffles me, you buy these movies then months later they're collecting Dust, then you make a Video on it but why have you got so much unseen anyway, maybe plan your buying?
@@iloveblue7920 because I’m a collector. We all do it. So much unseen… it’s not that I don’t want to watch them. I do. Sometimes, other life stuff has to take priority. My videos are about my struggles with the addiction to collecting… and other people’s struggles too. I’m honest about it. I lay it all out there. I can’t always explain the addiction, it just is… an addiction. Sometimes it takes me longer to work through, realise what I’m doing and that I have a problem. Doing the videos helps me think things through. My purchasing habits aren’t as bad as they used to be. It’s something I’m working through. I love movies, I have an addiction to collecting them. I love that for some it’s as easy as saying ‘plan your buying’ but sometimes it just isn’t that simple for someone struggling with that addictive behaviour.
At 15 mins, Why exactly did you order these 4titles,I did not order any of them, what does it say about me? I bought the Keep on DVD, plays very well, why do I need the 4K? Been giving mixed reviews.
@@iloveblue7920 I didn’t order 4 titles. I just went for 3… inglorious basterd, the gift and usual suspects… went for them because they’re all great films. I didn’t order The Cell because it wasn’t a movie I cared enough for. Glenn on the other hand, he did. The Keep, I’m not too bothered about personally, I’m not going to chase it down and pay a premium to have it just because it’s released by a boutique label. If the opportunity comes around I might grab a cheap copy to check it out but it’s not one I’m searching for personally. Of course there are others that went nuts for it… and it’s nice that fans now have an option for the upgrade if they want it.
Regarding Limited Editions at 8mins, regarding buying a 4K with slipcase if that's what you are into, that's fine, but Limited Editions just buy them if you want them, I want No Country for Old Men, but I don't know what Region it is?
@@iloveblue7920 I want No Country for Old Men too. For the criterion edition the 4k ‘should’ be region free but the Blu Ray will be region A locked. It’s on my hit list for the next Barnes & Noble Criterion sale… along with a couple of others.
Yes a special collectors item the brain 1962.
I have a vhs label called Monterrey Midnight Madness and a title called 1962s Freddie Francis the brain. Its worth AUD $180 on ebay.
@@stuartobrien78 it’s amazing the value of some of the tapes. I have no idea in terms of what’s rare or collectable at the moment… but having the video shop close by I’m starting to see little trends among collectors. $180 is a mighty high price tag 🏷️ any temptation to look at selling or is it a special collector item for you ?
Im really into physical media. I still have a slightly older Samsung series 6 full hd smart TV. It has some analogue ports to hook up to a vcr. And ports to connect to a Hdmi cable! Have you seen the 1987 vhs tape by Colombia pictures called Insect, AKA Blue Monkey. I watched it on vhs before my vcr broke down. Its now on blu ray by Code Red label called Blue Monkey! Cheers.
@@stuartobrien78 to some extent kinda regret clearing out some of the older formats. But… I enjoy the space clearing it out has given me. It’s still nice to have that nostalgic dip into these things, something I’m gonna do a little more of. I’ve not seen that VHS tape, maybe one to keep an eye out for when I go along to more of the VHS collector events 🤷🏼♂️ There will be more dives into VHS to come !
I found Alien Romulus felt like fanfiction. Watched the Machinest and preferred that.
@@RavenShinyThings Romulus did feel very much its own little thing. A one shot story set within the universe rather than being part of the franchise as a whole. Wondering how this TV show coming up is going to sit within the whole cinematic universe. Feels like they are digging theirselves into a bit of a hole, Weyland Yutani corporation seems to get bigger as an entity with each subsequent movie… to the point now that they seem to be ruling the galaxy as the overlords of everything.
@PhillwithadoubleL well the best stories from the wider alien universe I have seen are the papers back that had mirrored comics done by dark horse. Disney will not admit this and screw it up with their ideas. For instance aliens music of the spears would make an incredible big budget alien film.
I *try* nowadays, to wait, but since a lot of the titles I want to collect are steelbooks, I honestly daren't (except *Madame web* - I still can't believe it's not been in a big sale yet as surely no way it'll sell out!). And yes, I don't 'die in a ditch' (usually) over slipcovers, but I prefer them. I think more and more labels are realising people want to wait and save though so are making Limited Editions that come out a few months before the regular one, even if that 'Limitedness' only means a unique slip and a few postcards; they're catching on to our real FOMO and exploting it more than ever. I'm only really confused by the big distributor that announced it would no longer be doing slips. Why? It cost them pennies (usually) and mean so many collectors will buy whilst an item is a new release and, I assume, makes them more money. FWIW I'm not a disaster movie fan but enjoyed *Twisters* a lot more than I thought I would, so have bought a few more in the genre to try. As an aside London isn't HMV's biggest anime stockist; apparently that's Brighton (according to the HMV employee at the London branch)... what's _really_ nice, for me, about anime (apart from simply that I enjoy it, though I'm no expert) is that it's not on TV or streaming much so I see a lot of 'the younger generation' who _may_ stream a lot of their content go into HMV for anime... I almost wept for joy when someone, I guess in late teens, went up to the counter with an anime title, that must have been a DVD, and asked if they had it on Blu-ray. Not only a yunger person buying physical, but one who cared about picture and audio quality... there's hope for the future! Nice video... and *Tokyo Vice* is now on my Wishlist; thanks 👍You get to join the _Kermit Club_ as soeone who 'makes' me buy things I'd never heard of 🤣 P.S. The (relatively) nearby _Fopp_ (HMV owned, but more physical media oriented) has even better selections in some of the areas you were looking.
@@blujustin4175 those steelbooks and the FOMO are gonna get you every time ! Y’know, I never thought about Fopp while I was knocking around in London, I got one kinda locally to me in Nottingham. It just didn’t cross my mind on this trip. I’ll certainly be watching Twisters and likely enjoy it for what it is. Just not sure it’s something I’ll want to keep in the collection. Time will tell. Tokyo vice was on bbc iplayer when I caught it. You might be able to catch a couple of episodes on there before you dive in to picking up a pricey box set ! Just to see if it’s a show for you. I want to check out a couple of other HMV stores. Amazing how different seem of them feel. Plotting to head to their ‘Vault’ store in Birmingham for a video in the new year. Just a matter of squeezing in some extra time to make the journey. For the record, I’ve still not seen Madame Webb, not sure it’s one I’ll even try. Certainly won’t be looking at picking it up physically. Well, at least I don’t think I will at the moment.
Completely disagree on Carry-On, just watched yesterday and thought it was fine. No the Xmas aspect really wasn't as much as I thought, but they shot in LA and they just didn't do much with the decorative. I thought the acting and writing were fine and it was compelling. And I watch around at least 150 films a year and am only a bit younger than you guys. How Glenn could call that awful but praise Alien Romulus I can't disagree with more. Romulus was not good. It has a promising setup but doesn't deliver. It comes off like a fan film or "greatest hits" of the first 2 films or if a new Alien ride were made, it was a music video style shot trailer for a new ride. They repeat classic lines for no logical reason other than the most obvious and cringy call-back/fan service BS, all of the characters outside the lead and the android (whose ruined by repeating Ripley's bitch line which canonically hasn't happened yet) are completely shallow and worthless. The ending is dumb and they just do the weird/boring xenomorph/engineer hybrid creature we've seen versions of before. I saw it in the theater and it was right alongside Furiosa as a top new movie disappointment for the year. I'll never buy it or probably ever watch again.
@@MoviePalaceOfBlood got a feeling that Carry On is seeming a bit of a marmite movie. I think I mentioned in the stream that my wife really enjoyed it. I didn’t care for it personally but that’s fine… there are others that will. I like hearing other opinions though ! Romulus I was ok with, I enjoyed being back in the universe, until that last 20 mins which left the sour taste in my mouth. And I agree with you regarding the use of lines from other movies. Not keen when they do it in most things, not only this. Furiosa I’ve not actually seen yet, it’s one of many in my backlog !
What value did you put on your time and what did it cost to get into town ?
@@Baldnesz well this trip, I was already in town for an audition. Time wise, I always have spare time when heading to an audition because I travel early due to the distance. So cost wise for those things, nothing really in this instance. I know what you’re getting at though. If the cost of a special journey and time taken would outweigh the cost of just ordering those titles on release online, right ?
Can't afford the day 1 pickups plus the piles are high enough so I wait it out for a 2nd hand copy or a sale to grab things
@@shandy1087 getting the same stuff at a fraction of the price 👌🏼 a little patience makes a fair difference price wise.
I was just at that HMV last week and picked up Aliens plus Perfect Days in digibook 2/£30. The staff there are always helpful. They understood my frustration to see the only Hitcher boxset in stock dented from the spider wraps. Quick inventory check and they sent me down to FOPP where I had my choice of multiple boxsets. Sometimes I save by buying while on a layover instead of having to ship to the states. Plus I get to pick the item I want instead of taking a chance on shipping damage. Not sure how much of a savings I get after the currency exchange but it is fun for the hunt and to find stuff we don’t get in the States.
Hi Phill, I’m usually a day one purchaser but on occasion I will wait for a title I’m not overly fussed about 🧐 I do watch each and every pick up ready for the following weeks video though. Nice that the gamble of waiting payed off for you 🙌 good luck on the audition result too mate, take care and Merry Christmas 👍🎅🏻👍
@@kermitsghost I struggle with the time for viewing at the moment. Can’t see a time in the near future when I’d be able to watch a new release straight away. But soon… right after I’ve conquered my back log !
I'm a big fan of the Transformers series of film particularly the couple with The Fox in 'em and have waited for over a year for that 6 film steel books set to go down in price. A few days ago the BIG A finally gave in and offered them up at nearly half the 100 quid asking price it was stubbornly holding out on. No need to ask if the box of fox is in my collection now! Oh, if any edgy mf wants to laugh at my taste in films you can count the 🦊🦊🦊🦊s I give on Megan's sweet arse! Sorry Christmas has started early in my household! 👍😂😁🎅
@@snowymatrix patience did pay off for you on that one then. Don’t buy into anyone else’s bull if they’re giving you 💩 on what films you enjoy. All personal preference ain’t it. Watch what you love ✌🏼 🦊
Is it OK to wait yo buy limited editions? Sometimes they run out and sometimes they're still available?
@@rafficrashid867 it’s seems to be such pot luck trying to guess what will sell out and what you need to pick up sharpish. I just try and consider the title a little more now… do I really need a limited edition of it or will a standard release be fit for purpose ?!
@PhillwithadoubleL Thank you. I'll try to do that.
I totally understand why people want slip covers (I've been there), but they are a con. It's just cardboard.
@@stark_harshly I agree, they are a con to chase for… But I still manage to get sucked into the thought process of needing or wanting it. As much as I say they don’t matter. At times it still dictates a pick up decision 😂
I hope you passed the audition 👍 I try to wait unless it's something I really want then I'm pre-ordering as soon as it's announced.
@@alexpattison6448 no clue on the audition yet. It’s the worst part now, putting it out of my head and waiting. I did my job though, focused on the audition as the main job… not what could come from a successful audition. Leave my focus there in the room rather than on what could be. I 100% go in for pre orders for certain titles. Just found myself shifting away from the newer releases and having those pre orders in for re-releases or remasters of older movies. I Carefully consider if it’s going to be limited or likely to be around for a while and offer up some kind of price drop.
@PhillwithadoubleL I agree it's the older remasters that tend to get me pre-ordering as well, Dawn of the Discs was posting about a Dirty Harry 4K biscuit tin next year and I'll be pre-ordering that as soon as I can.
@ just the first movie ? I’m gonna go look for that now !
@@PhillwithadoubleL Dawn of the Discs tweeted about 4K steelbooks for Dirty Harry, Pale Rider and The Outlaw Josey Wales honestly I'm tempted for all three but will definitely go for Dirty Harry. No news on the Harry sequels unfortunately.
@ no doubt they’ll follow if Dirty Harry does well.
😆 for the big kids the Disney store Phil 😂
@@paulrose319 and I love it 😂 I might not buy thing while there but I do love looking through all the stuff !
Just chuckling at the fact I went to hmv (portsmouth) today picked up true lies , saw the 2 for 30 and looked hard for another film on offer I wanted, considered aliens but went with star trek nemesis lol yes ill probably get roasted for that
@@PatrickIngham21 I very nearly dipped into the 3 for £40 too. Few in there were considerations, want to upgrade superman 2 & possibly 3 to 4k. Didnt want to be buying too much pre Christmas though. Never know what Santa may bring (or not, as generally my wife is fearful of picking anything physical media related as she worries that I’d already have it)
@PhillwithadoubleL I looked at the 3 for 40 but seem to own all the titles I would pick lol
Great video , I only buy a few at launch . Most I buy on sale
@@HomeCinemaEnthusiast thanks man 🙏🏼 I’ve slowed off on launch titles. In fact, if I look back at my pick ups. I’ve really slowed off on the new movies on release… early pick ups have tended to be older titles getting the new restorations over the new movies 😱
I made it far enough in the video, to leave a comment 😸 Super jealous.. envious? (One of those words). Of that store! I have not seen that much or such a big variety of physical media for sale in a very long time. (In one place). All the stores around me in USA keep having less and less. Even new releases can sometimes be hard to find. I have had to resort to ordering online. Which is way less exciting than finding the item in the wild (store).
@@SirMeowsAlot89 you made it 🙌🏼🙌🏼 Thought the store was really great, it quite surprised me with the variety. While online ordering is convenient, there’s nothing quite like visiting the store and touching things ! Do plan at some point next year on visiting and even bigger one 😱
That is a massive anime section
@@cyphersigma1 I was really surprised. Not seen a selection like that in store… ever !
@PhillwithadoubleL me either and I was in that store near the beginning of the year and it wasn't that stocked
I didnt get the memo on slipcovers, why do so many seem to love them?. To me its just a duplicate of the cover artwork and makes the cases fit side by side less neatly on a shelf, It protects the vinyl from surface scratches i guess, but apart from that they do nothing for me.
@@SecretOfMonkeyIsland784 I’ve said before that I don’t really need them and aren’t that bothered about them but then when it comes to purchases… it’s a consideration… and i don’t know why I do it 🤷🏼♂️ Need to break that weird habit
