I'm on the other end of the spectrum, as in, I'm a minimalist. It's my belief the more stuff you own, the more it owns you and the less free you are. This is because everything IMO comes with a maintenance fee (time, money, space and/or effort). Everything you add to your life has it own unique maintenance fee, but regardless whatever it is, it will always result in your losing some freedom one way or another. Also, people often don't realise the thought of having the said product is way more powerful than actually owning it. This is because your imagination is the best sales man you'll ever meet because it knows the exact emotions and what-if scenarios to create to make you desire the product even more. However, when you actually get the product, it can often be underwhelming because it simply couldn't compete with what your imagination created of you using the product. Anyway, good to hear you've recognised you have a problem and doing something about it... I see other people here on TH-cam who are in similar situation as you yet they're so lost in the moment of wanting the next big thing they don't even realise they may have a problem themselves.
Honestly, I’ve been watching some TH-camrs based around minimalism. I think it’s partially what’s helped me take a better look at things as I’ve been on this journey. While I’ll likely always have a collection I now grasp that I don’t need it all… or at least don’t need to keep it all. Gaining some space back in my office helped me along the journey. As my space cleared… so did my head. It’s given me a certain amount of clarity. It’s going to be a long process to change years of habits but… I’m doing better at it.
AND, once you get older and actually start to become aware of your own mortality, things become a bit more clear. You can't take your movie collection with you, they're just 'things'. Ultimately, if one finds enjoyment, bliss and happyness from collecting physical media than go for it, if you can manage and balance it out. But at 40, I'm pretty much over it. It was fun back in my 20's, but bookcases full of DVD spines just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Hobbies aside, the most important thing in life to me as my health, fitness and eating healthy....Ahem, and living it up as if it were the late 80's all over again. lol And I've become more of a minimalist over the years, and would rather save space by stashing the remainng discs i have in a couple of disc binders, and sticking with the convenience of streaming, and calling it a wrap. Even physical video game media looks like crap these days. They're not even trying anymore and there's just LESS of it. I went digital with Switch & PS5 and have no regrets. letting go of my physical media(Cases, that is), and rolling with Digital for modern consoles, for me personally, has gotten rid of that mental clutter. Out of site, out of mind! :P
Back in the 80s my father would often bring home vhs tapes of our favourite movies, he also had his own small collection of now rare uncut tape before certs existed, which he later sadly all sold off cheap to a mate to make a few quid when he was skint, he sadly passed away about 20 years ago now, so I guess I associate collecting with those times, in late 80s early 90s i counted I have around 250 vhs tapes, which I later sold off as I got married and they were well old and worthless only to start again with dvds which I later sold off again, the trouble was I was always skint as I was my wifes carer, now after devorcing and having more money on my hands and the quality of the movies i loved is getting better and better im back at it again, I have to pop by my local CEX any time im near, i only watch the movies once then just shelve them for years, I recently brought the Bruce Lee at Golden harvest for over £200 from ebay got it felt all excited watched the movies now back on the shelf, there is a high i get from just owning a movie and watching it getting lost in it briefly having my fix and remebering watching them with my father.
I've always gotten more enjoyment as a kid, by just going to the video store in the late 80's early 90's, browsing the VHS tapes, NES games, the junkfood(etc etc) rather than actually BUYING a VHS tape, on most occasions. We owned probably less than 10 vhs tapes growing up, the allure just wasn't really there. :P But i'll never forget winning a brand new clam shell of The Jungle Book back in 1990 during my local Mega Video Store's colouring contest. :P That was a big deal for me, and also bringing back a rented copy of Who Framed Roger Rabit.
Your channel has really helped me. I can really relate to pretty much everything you discuss. This video in particular. You seem to be covering topics that a lot of others won’t. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s important.
Thanks for your message Daniel. I’m glad you’re finding it relatable. I worry sometimes about posting topics like this but at the same time, I’m glad I post topics like this. It helps me and I hope it helps others with their thought processes a little. I’m happy you’ve found value in this video. There’s more to come that perhaps delve into the uncomfortable things… but I’ll also be doing the videos for the more fun stuff too… there’s still joy to be found in our hobbies, it’s just finding that balance.
Another great video, Phill - very relatable. I found myself being sucked into unnecessary consumerism. Yeah, we all love films, but dont allow that love to lul you into buying stuff that may only give you a moment of temporary happiness. True happiness comes from a connection with your nearest & dearest - not a large collection of film. "The things you own, end up owning you. :- Chuck Palahniuk
@@Primo420 thank you. Glad you found you could relate to some of the stuff in there. Think I’d been in that cycle for may year. Do plan to cover a little of how it started for me and why it carried on etc… it’ll be a video for the future.
I am going through the same thing. Collecting on your own can be fine, but adding social media, TH-cam, and treating sales like it's the Super Bowl causes a chaotic dilemma. I have hundreds of discs I have not watched, yet I see over $700.00 of box sets I want. Or I can just go to the thrift shop and buy a box of DVDs 3 for a dollar. As I declutter I still need to buy hundreds of tarifold sleeves. I could just turn off the computer and watch my movies.
@@retrofun41 it’s a funny thing. As much as I pull back I know that I soon get drawn back in. Constantly have to try and keep myself in check. Today I’m in Gibraltar doing the tourist thing. Already found myself wandering into shops that advertise DVDs to see what they have. It’s a learned behaviour that just isn’t easy to escape.
These videos really help put things into perspective. So far I've raised a substantial amount from culling through ebay and I'm still in the process of working through my backlog. Thanks to AJ, yourself and Glenn for keeping me motivated.
I will pass your message along. Glad you’re finding some common ground with these videos. I’m finding a lot of us have the same struggles but just don’t openly talk about it. Out of interest. Those items you’re clearing out. Have you missed any of them or regret moving any on ? I’ve cleared items I didn’t think I would ever part with when I picked them up. Not missed them in the slightest.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Looking at my ebay stats, I've sold 112 items in the past 90 days and the only thing that I regretted parting with was my Middle Earth boxset. Not necessarily for the films but for the features, (I think I left a comment about this on one of your previous videos) but that regret lasted maybe an hour? If that. I'm more than happy with the theatrical cuts of the LOTR films and genuinely glad to have those ghastly Hobbit films out of my collection 😅🤣. In all seriousness, most of the stuff I've culled I have watched. I find putting things to the side for a week or two after viewing helps with the cull. If it's not something that I have no inclination to revist, it goes.
@@Jalipino_Jay wow. That’s a solid amount sold. A bunch of my listings end this week. Dreading the packaging ! The features on the lord of the rings set were great. Many duplicated over various previous individual releases.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Indeed they were but realistically, I can't imagine watching them again or the extended cuts. It's hard enough fitting a 90 minute film in let alone 3 - 4 hours. Get yourself some bubble envelopes, makes things a lot easier. I do all mine online and chuck them in the post box down the road. All tracked as well when you do that way.
Interesting topic I can definitely relate to. Have followed a.j.'s vids on this subject aswell. It might be covering old ground or unrelatable to some, but it's important to make people aware of these impulses, habits/compulsions/addictions as it can help break the cycle. I have fallen into the trap many times and managed to reign it in, to only repeat the same irrational behaviour. We justify these purchases whatever they be to ourselves knowing we are not fooling ourselves leading to extra finnacial burden and feelings of selfishness and guilt. Good on you for being honest with yourself and hopefully helping others face their reasons for overspending.
I try to remain more aware of my habits but they are things that keep coming back around. I feel like I have it under control… certainly more than I used to. Still need work though, still need to remain more considered with my purchasing habits. Not everyone suffers with those impulses but it’s nice to talk about it and find others that have had the same thoughts or feelings with their habits.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Ebay and these sites know the psychology of fomo and keep you in the loop of deals you don't want to miss. Even when you do miss an auction they send you a message. "This one got away" leaving you sometimes feeling more determined to win next time😄 Its a constant battle to remain retail celebate in a world full of dirty temptations 😄😄😄
As someone who has filled up multiple disc wallets with DVDs and have stacks of unopened 4Ks and Blus I know I buy things I don't necessarily need. I have over 1K titles I own and haven't seen! I have switched to only buying things I've seen before or only buying vanilla titles when they're discounted but I do get carried away with that. I was the same with CDs 20 years ago but I seem to have switched focus to films. The lack of space is more of a problem for me than a monetary one but I am aware that my purchasing is definitely more of a sign of addiction than me actually wanting these things.
For me recently it’s been more about the space. I’ve found that in having so much, my mind became as cluttered as my shelves. I think it helped me realise how little I need ‘everything’ when I worked away for several months and was without the collection… not having them created a domino effect for me which lead to a rethink of my habits and clearing some things out.
Sorry to hear that. I sincerely hope that you are finding your way through things. It’s difficult to manage things like this with trauma, don’t put too much pressure on yourself about the impulses, just take one day at a time… also, never be worried about reaching out to the helplines if you just need some help / guidance or someone to talk to.
@@PhillwithadoubleL...thank you. Things have settled down some whet now, and the impulse buying is certainly less. I pick up movies and editions that I really want a but more now. Quality over quantity👍
I started collecting in 2002 . In 2013 i quit smoking and my physical media collection was relatively small at that time .i told myself for every week i'm off cigarettes treat yourself to a dvd or blu ray .Over 10 years on I'm still off cigarettes and my collection has grow to around 1000 titles . I wonder if swapped one addiction for another
It’s quite possible. Although, if you’re enjoying your collection and not feeling overwhelmed with it or struggling in any way then it’s not a ‘problem’ hobby / addiction as such. It suppose it depends on if you’re reliant on that weekly pick up in some way
Setting rules/goals can help. For instance, only procure what you will watch again with enjoyment each year, possibly two years and work out how many you could watch in this period, that is your limit. If unsure, use streaming or go to the cinema to vet movies before buying them physically. When you reach your limit and you want to add a film, then remove a film of lesser watch value. You could also limit your storage to your reflect the number of films you can watch in a period, so nothing can be added unless something is removed...
I’ve started to try and vet things before a purchase now. I’ve certainly limited down what I’ve been picking up and also been clearing out some of the filler I had on my shelves. It’s an ongoing process but I’m finding more clarity with my path.
The threshold/trap is collecting because you definitely want to enjoyably watch it again and again, or collecting because you want your collection to look good, but in the latter one must ask oneself, 'Who am I trying to impress and is it necessary?'
Thanks AJ, and thanks for taking the time to add your thoughts for the video. I still have a lot of questions around how I collect as im sure many of us do. Hopefully a few of my videos just give pause for thought. I know making them and discussing things certainly helps me with a little clarity… even if I don’t always pay full attention to it.
Get rid of the plastic & Cardboard/Cases, and Stash the Discs that you actually use inside a few CD binders, and throw them in drawer. :P Out of sight, out of mind. You'll save a ton of save and strip away a lot of that mental clutter. ;)
I think collecting can become depressing because it feels like creating a pharaohs tomb of objects. I think objects matter in themselves, there's a certain sense where minimalism also is compulsive. The whole idea is that "if I can just get these objects right" things will be okay, and I think it's obvious why this happens. It's better to think you have to manage some backlog or something, or acquiring things, and that is a problem that can be never ending, whereas problems in life if you don't solve them, they just destroy you. I had this thing of buying a load of crap during lockdown, then feeling like I had to justify it by using it. Then not wanting to look at all the purchases. I wished Microsoft had an option to delete content forever, but then really what difference does that make? Eventually, have to just look at it as me being silly. I have it over all kinds of stuff. I compulsively delete my own comments even. Kind of funny. I plan to just let things roll a bit more. Everyone is caught up right now in trying to optimise themselves. But there's no real secret key.
@BazaarBackrooms nice insights, thank you for sharing. I never thought of it the other way with the minimalism aspect. I still know I go over the top with purchases at times. Keep trying to adjust a bit at a time… but it seems to go around in cycles.
Although I do collect DVD’s, I relate to this a lot with my physical games collection. I don’t even play them all, it’s just the thought of owning them and having them on my shelf outweighs not buying them lol.
I think we all struggle to some extent. As long as you’re not doing yourself any damage with mental health or the bank balance then it’s not always too bad. I took a step back from collecting for a while and started to realise that I’d gone over the top.
I think all.of us have been there. But once you take notice of it you can change it more easily. You can always remove something from the checkout cart. But id say that when you do make those impuose orders, try to take time to enjoy what you bought. Let yourself feel better cause thats what you needed in the first place. But being self aware is important.
💯 absolutely. I’ll be taking the time to watch the things I picked up for sure. They weren’t ‘bad’ pick ups really. Just sparked of TMNT thought process of ‘why now’ ‘what happened to make me NEED these now’ I’ve started to use the wish lists more. Over time, some things will just get removed. Others eventually ordered. Using it to be more thoughtful about what I’m ordering and why rather than the normal impulse of just ordering. I think more struggle with these sort of issues than they care to admit. Think I started to pull back when I found that I just lost the excitement with what was arriving because… it was just “normal”.
Seeing your videos is a reminder that I have to start looking inward and do a lot of self reflection.Like all of you I do have a problem to a certain extent because I’m a dependent and I live with my parents so my spending is very limited, if spend way more(cash or credit)they’re going take it away from me.Even if I don’t like it,in the long run it’s always better for me to have that anchor ⚓️ in my life which my parents, great video Phill!!!👍
I was a little worried about posting this video Anthony (think that’s why I changed up the thumbnail). Maybe it got a little too personal but… it’s good to share some things. I think there are a lot more out there that struggle either way these issues than they care to admit to themselves. I’ve started to recognise a lot of things, I maybe don’t understand them and don’t always manage them in the correct way but I’m working on them. I’ll continue to share my journey as I go along from time to time. Stay healthy ✌🏼
This video really hit home for me...I can totally relate to much of what you described and I am very aware of the problem I have. It's now impossible for me to identify what part of this is a hobby for me with things I actually want to things I just think I want based on my mood, often influenced by seeing someone else unboxing the item and seemingly making them happy/excited. I find myself buying stuff and returning it or just simply selling it on at a loss...ridiculous really.
I was a little worried about posting this video. To me, it just felt completely different from my other videos (think that’s why I went with a more basic thumbnail). But… I did want to touch on what’s ’in my head’ and keep my videos pretty honest. It is difficult when your hobby is also your addiction. Personally. I’ve started to use wish lists a lot. Try my hardest to wait things out. See how I feel after a couple of weeks or so… difficult when it comes to FOMO on those limited editions. Ive pretty much stopped watching many unboxing videos. It’s just temptation all the time (it’s hard enough on social media groups with numerous posts about the same items). It’s good to talk about your thoughts, I’ve find vocalising things for these videos has helped me personally.
@@PhillwithadoubleL appreciate you sharing your thoughts and definitely reassuring for me knowing there are many others who think the same way! I get a lot of comfort from having a collection and my pick ups are quite focused on things I like and not just everything for the sake of it. So it could be worse for sure! I like collecting and knowing I own the movies, many provide a nostalgic feeling for which I never tire of. It also means I feel part of a community who also love physical media and have a passion for a hobby that on the most part…is enjoyable ;-)
great video Phill,i know i have a addiction collecting movies, vinyl records, cds and books and recently have been thinking being in my 50's how many times will i watch my films or listen to my music etc.for instance i have around 3000 discs and if i watch 3 films a week that will take 20 years and not rewatching any of them!
I worked out my numbers on a previous video. Think it kinda worried me. All of these things I collected. Chances are… with all of the new things coming out. I’m not going to be going back to a good % of them. It’s what made me think more about culling some movies and keeping the best of the best… or at least those I’m most interested in watching again (admittedly the ones I’d rewatch aren’t always the best movies) I also want the things I pick up to feel special. The way I’d been collecting and spending. A new arrival was just another ‘normal’ day. I want that excitement back for a new release arriving
Think we all have addictions Phill, my two are Whiskey, and strangely downloaded audio stories.I have hundreds i havent listened to. I know its hard, maybe go for a 20 minute walk before you purchase to clear your mind and then make a decision.
Thanks Brian. I’ve actually been thinking more about making sure I break that spend habit. I’ve been using the wishlist option on Amazon more than adding to basket now. Avoiding that immediate purchase. A couple of days seems to give a better perspective after the hype and excitement wears off. I love a good audiobook too, I’m a fan of the bios with the artist narrating their own stories.
Agree .100%. I also like to read and collect books beside physical media and I always find myself in a bookshop if I’m a bit mentally down in the dumps. I have no debt and all my bills are paid but my condo looks like I could open my own store and have a full inventory 😂 mood is always the reason for my purchases
I go in for a nice selection of books too. Although nowhere near the same way as with the movies. I love a good bookshop. I have no debt from my hobbies but I have had a bad problem with it in the past. Those days are behind me thankfully. Some personal collections I see now have a greater selection than my local video shops growing up. Some of them amaze me.
Thanks man, and thank you for the sub. Wasn’t sure whether I went a little dark with the video but… wanted to speak my mind a little. Will be delving into it a little further in the future.
They’re on eBay right now. They’ll be leaving me pretty soon. Unfortunately it came down to the fact that they’ve sat in my collection still sealed for a long long time. When I consider what I want to watch next… they’re never really up there. Not saying I won’t regret getting rid of them. Just at the moment, there’s just too much other ‘stuff’ taking my attention.
I have a routine every few months I pack a lot of blurays in a bag I don’t intend to watch or watched and didn’t rate and sell them. More expensive titles I sell on EBay. It’s a natural human thing to accumulate physical things with some it’s trainers or clothes with us it’s physical media.
A good way of doing things! I’m in that process at the moment. I have a bunch of things listed on eBay / Facebook market place and a bag of things for CEX. Some have been sat in the boxes for a while. A testing ground to see if I miss them on the shelves. If they’ve not been missed or thought about for an amount of time. I’ve been moving them on.
It's ultimately about being disciplined . Yes, we can all buy things when our mood is low, like you say, go for a walk, do something else . The hobby is supposed to be fun, but if it's becoming an addiction, then it's time to pause and reflect. I didn't get caught up in the Abyss 4k pre-order nonense, i still haven't brought it because i knew it would come back in stock. Most of this stuff can always be found on the second-hand market anyway , and patience does help . Do you need everything always on day one of the release ? If your collection is becoming overwhelming, then it's time to sort and sell that can be a good way of tackling it and helps clears the mind and fill the pockets.Another warning sign is getting into debt this is a big red flag. Collecting should not be impacting living costs, budget , discipline, and patience are the best advice i follow but help is out there for those struggling. Great vlog
I have been disciplined recently. This was something different. Something that pushed that discipline to one side. When I was younger I did get into debt from the collecting, quite badly. That’s all behind me now. But, the old habits are still there. I’m sure we all still buy stuff we don’t really ‘need’ anyway. Just something a little different hits when you get into the psychology of the whole thing.
I'm a selective collector, I buy films I love and rewatch. A lot of which are nostalgic to me, personally. I don't buy into hype, or if it's limited edition, or released by a certain label. That's not what my collection is about. Everyone collects for different reasons. I don't over do it, but I have spent a lot in the last six months.
I’m trying to get back to your way of collecting. Doing it for the films I love. My habit sucked me into a pattern of anything and everything, even if they weren’t getting watched. I want to be at a point of enjoying my collection rather than amassing for the sake of collecting
@@PhillwithadoubleL I’m a cinephile first and foremost. Don’t get me wrong I’d happily pre order a limited edition over a standard edition, if the choice is there. But I’m picky about which films I purchase in general. I like to look at my bookcase and see a reflection of my tastes. Collecting every Second Sight limited edition, or every Criterion, or every Arrow Video etc has no value or meaning to me. It’s not like I’ve run out of films I actually do want to own, buying anything and everything seems pointless. Collecting physical media is still an addiction for sure, I just know what I like. And if I’m interested in something I haven’t seen before, I tend to watch by other means first, whether it’s renting or streaming before I buy.
@@KirkRedgate I was getting suckered into that with the second sight and arrow releases at a point. Pulling back to how you’ve just mentioned. A collection to reflect my tastes over the anything and everything.
@@KirkRedgate Bingo. It should be a reflection of what you love. I've just moved, and my collection is not with me yet, and the house feels empty and devoid of anything me.
My biggest frustration about buying and collecting is not having enough time to watch what I have been buying. My wife and myself have identical work schedules and alone time to watch movies is rare these days.
Same. It’s bad when the buy pile far outweighs what you have time for. I have a similar situation with the wife. It’s why certain titles don’t seem to get watched for a while when she isn’t too keen… one of the reasons I’ve still not started watching Shogun too
On Point 💯 That's Exactly how many of us feels like about our Collection and yes it can be a bad Addicted Hobby but Remember this you don't have to keep up with others Special from those Big TH-camrs of the Physical Media Community they just keeps buying things for the nice packaging only and never watch the damn Movie so what's the point of having those anyway if you never watch it 🤔 It should be always about the Movie you love and not how many Physical Copys you have. 1. Buy less. 2. Buy Movies you really love and when you know you gonna watch it more then 1 time. 3. Don't have the fear of missing out things because you can't have everything. 4. Don't have the fear about being a outsider of this Community just because you can keep up with others 5. You don't really need the 4K to show that you love Movies. 6. Be happy about the things you have and enjoy it.
👆🏼👆🏼 these points 💯 I’ve adjusted my collecting and adjusting my collection. It’s an ongoing process but you’re 100% right. It should always be about the movies over just owning as much as possible.
A little time gives some perspective doesn’t it. I think that’s what started me thinking about this habit of accumulating. I worked away from home for a long period of time. I didn’t have any of this physical stuff with me… I was fine… I didn’t really miss it.
I sometimes wonder if Imdb has any part in all this, for others besides myself. At least I had a phase ”gotta get my 2000 rated movies milestone done while I’m at it.” Then there’s the whole ”oh this and this one is a high rated movie, gotta get and see those, old/new movies” before you know it you have accumulated a list of 100 movies/shows to the imdb watchlist So, in a imaginary world where imdb did not exist.. would it mean less hoarding?
I’m not sure it would mean less hoarding. IMDb list is a way to go for some. I’ve been drawn into collecting for directors before now. Trying to complete a directors full catalogue. There are a couple of directors I’ve completed and a couple more that I was approaching completion on. Then realised… I was collecting (some) movies that I just wasn’t that interested in. I’ve seen others collect for certain actors too. Although, I do think that IMDb perhaps does encourage that need to fill your shelves with the top ‘must haves’ that they list.
I guess it’s about taking stock of what you have and enjoying what you have first. Find a way back to enjoying the purest love of film and ease off the collecting for a while, there will always be more releases. Those quick compulsive buys only lead to quick and short lifts of endorphin levels, which ultimately mean you didn’t really need the item in the first place if it’s just going to sit on your shelf! Watch what you have and sell what you don’t really care about. But I feel you, I’m the same with Books and Lego also but I’ve learned to use my hobbies to buy what I consider compulsive purchases, providing there will be some value to sell later so it still scratches that itch, but I set myself a budget.
The process of easing off is in play, as is clearing out some of the items I’ve amassed. Just the occasional slip but thankfully I’m getting quicker at realising what I’m doing. I think we all seem to do this in some way. It’s strange looking back through a collection and realising that you didn’t need to ‘keep’ a large portion.
@@PhillwithadoubleL I think I mentioned before that I jumped on those latest Cameron 4K films, started with Abyss then thought well now I need Aliens and True Lies 😂 think I’ve watched about half an hour of aliens and it’s back in the cupboard! It’s that compulsive collector habit that kicks in. Nothing wrong with having a collection like yours providing you’re enjoying them, I got rid of all my DVDs years ago… apart from my favourites! Great channel Phil! 👍
@@Officiallywilf currently sorting through my collection and realising I didn’t ‘enjoy’ all of the movies I had collected. It was more the compulsion to keep them, like I was trying to prove myself as a collector / movie fan. I have the same problem with my cd coollection .where i have over 3,000 .. Sure i do listen to music ..but how long would it take to listen to all of it
I don’t know if I picked up a bit of a collecting habit from my dad. He’s similar with music. Vinyl and CDs take up a large amount of space in his house. Although they’re restricted to just the one room. Not sure he’s touched many of the physical music stuff for a while. He ripped loads onto hard drives so doesn’t really have that need for the physical beyond having that collection to look through… and touch. Sometimes the physical feel of a product is quite comforting / satisfying
I find the following rules help curb me collecting 4K UHD's i dont need: 1) Is the film a 7/10 for me 2) Is it a film i want to repeat watch - If "No" to the previous then i dont buy it.
Yup, I certainly need to pull back the blind buys. Or make sure I have the time to watch and then sell straight away if it isn’t to my tastes. I have been pretty restrained recently. I’ve even held back on things I actually feel I want, just to allow that time to see how much I really want it. For example, I’ve still not picked up True Lies or Aliens 4k 😱 or The Crow. At the moment I’m considering what time I have to repeat view these. I wouldn’t get to them straight away so trying not to pick them up until I’m actually ready.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Unless something is a sellout type item .. never rush to buy, it will only get cheaper as it gets older. Buying a 4K film just to watch and see if you like it seems a costly / risky strategy, its expensive and even if you resale you have eBay fee's, why not rent it or stream service it, only buy what you know you 100% love the movie.
I see you bought The Fabelmans. This was a slightly disappointing title to me. Most of the Spielberg stuff since the late nineties hasn't worked for me so much. I know I will never watch War Horse or Lincoln again and Tintin I was pretty mixed on.
I’ve heard really mixed things on Fabelmans so my expectations aren’t too high. Still looking forward to it. I think the reflex to order it was based on the ‘First edition’ being on offer for a limited time… and my mood at the time. I quite enjoyed what he did with west side story… ready player one on the other hand really disappointed me. I do want to give it another look now i know what to expect but I enjoyed the book that much that I’m not sure I’ll get anything any different out of a second viewing.
I have zero regrets from my DVD/Blu-ray purchasing, I haven't been neglecting my financial obligations, and I haven't filled entire walls with shelving to hold my collection.
This was a great video. I cringe watching you tubers justify there huge collections that alot hasn't even been opened let alone watched. Each to their own of course. It's their life but they are lieing to themselves it feels
I can’t justify all of my collection that’s 100% certain. Some things have / had no real reason to remain here other than to make up numbers. Sometimes when you already have so much, those new releases arriving… just get a little less exciting. You see it on some TH-camrs faces, some kinda lose that enthusiasm over time as they mount up more and more.
I want to comment with a laughing emoji but can’t 100% tell if that is from your personal experience 🤷🏼♂️ Hope it was a worthy box set for you if it was… Godzilla maybe ?
Sorry. Can't relate. I love movies and rather have a large collection where I can watch anything I want when I want then be at the mercy of streaming companies. I don't buy just to buy. I buy because I know I enjoy watching these films.
Sorry man i don't go into all this doom posting about any subject. Do what makes you happy and if it doesn't don't do it. Long ago i saw the Woman in Black, the original UK mftv film not the crappy US reimagining with that silly Harry Potter boy, and there's the dinner table scene where one of the characters says: collecting anything is ultimately a pointless activity but.....
I enjoy collecting. Just every now and again it gets out of hand. Last week just felt one of those weeks. I like to ensure that I’m honest with my videos so this one was just very reflective on my thought process last week. Kept the thumbnail a little more basic because this one felt a little different from my norm.
💯💯☝️☝️Very true words
AND, once you get older and actually start to become aware of your own mortality, things become a bit more clear. You can't take your movie collection with you, they're just 'things'. Ultimately, if one finds enjoyment, bliss and happyness from collecting physical media than go for it, if you can manage and balance it out. But at 40, I'm pretty much over it. It was fun back in my 20's, but bookcases full of DVD spines just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Hobbies aside, the most important thing in life to me as my health, fitness and eating healthy....Ahem, and living it up as if it were the late 80's all over again. lol
And I've become more of a minimalist over the years, and would rather save space by stashing the remainng discs i have in a couple of disc binders, and sticking with the convenience of streaming, and calling it a wrap.
I love that the collecting and movies can evoke such strong nostalgia and emotion.
Thanks for sharing your story with collecting 🫶🏼
I've always gotten more enjoyment as a kid, by just going to the video store in the late 80's early 90's, browsing the VHS tapes, NES games, the junkfood(etc etc) rather than actually BUYING a VHS tape, on most occasions. We owned probably less than 10 vhs tapes growing up, the allure just wasn't really there. :P
But i'll never forget winning a brand new clam shell of The Jungle Book back in 1990 during my local Mega Video Store's colouring contest.

@@Primo420 thank you.
Glad you found you could relate to some of the stuff in there. Think I’d been in that cycle for may year.
Do plan to cover a little of how it started for me and why it carried on etc… it’ll be a video for the future.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Look forward to it, sir.
"This one got away" leaving you sometimes feeling more determined to win next time😄
Its a constant battle to remain retail celebate in a world full of dirty temptations 😄😄😄
A very important video here. Unfortunately TH-cam put an Amazon ad slap bang in the middle of!
Read the room TH-cam 🤦🏼♂️
Great video.
I can certainly relate to the impulse, and buying for the feeling/s side of of it, as I lost my wife 19 months ago.
That’s a great video Phill.
Makes me question whether I am In control or do I just ‘think ‘I am
Thanks AJ, and thanks for taking the time to add your thoughts for the video.
I still have a lot of questions around how I collect as im sure many of us do. Hopefully a few of my videos just give pause for thought. I know making them and discussing things certainly helps me with a little clarity… even if I don’t always pay full attention to it.
Get rid of the plastic & Cardboard/Cases, and Stash the Discs that you actually use inside a few CD binders, and throw them in drawer. :P Out of sight, out of mind. You'll save a ton of save and strip away a lot of that mental clutter. ;)
So well done!
Thank you 🙏🏼
I think collecting can become depressing because it feels like creating a pharaohs tomb of objects.
Just sparked of TMNT thought process of ‘why now’ ‘what happened to make me NEED these now’
I’ve started to use the wish lists more.
It’s what made me think more about culling some movies and keeping the best of the best… or at least those I’m most interested in watching again (admittedly the ones I’d rewatch aren’t always the best movies)
I also want the things I pick up to feel special. The way I’d been collecting and spending. A new arrival was just another ‘normal’ day. I want that excitement back for a new release arriving
@@PhillwithadoubleL 100% with you there
Think we all have addictions Phill, my two are Whiskey, and strangely downloaded audio stories.I have hundreds i havent listened to.
This is me! All day, especially with rare nasty horror titles! New Sub, great topic!
Thanks man, and thank you for the sub.
Wasn’t sure whether I went a little dark with the video but… wanted to speak my mind a little. Will be delving into it a little further in the future.
get a grip.
collect, keep, use.. uncollect (sell, give away, send back).. it's not a serious issue.
Did you really sell Trancers and Castle Freak (I believe the original) blu rays? Those are keepers for me.
@PhillwithadoubleL I think we can all over indulge with lots of things at times , it is just good to take a step back assess and re group 👍
It’s why certain titles don’t seem to get watched for a while when she isn’t too keen… one of the reasons I’ve still not started watching Shogun too
On Point 💯
That's Exactly how many of us feels like about our Collection and yes it can be a bad Addicted Hobby but Remember this you don't have to keep up with others Special from those Big TH-camrs of the Physical Media Community they just keeps buying things for the nice packaging only and never watch the damn Movie so what's the point of having those anyway if you never watch it 🤔
It should be always about the Movie you love and not how many Physical Copys you have.
1. Buy less.
2. Buy Movies you really love and when you know you gonna watch it more then 1 time.
3. Don't have the fear of missing out things because you can't have everything.
4. Don't have the fear about being a outsider of this Community just because you can keep up with others
5. You don't really need the 4K to show that you love Movies.
6. Be happy about the things you have and enjoy it.
👆🏼👆🏼 these points 💯
I’ve adjusted my collecting and adjusting my collection. It’s an ongoing process but you’re 100% right. It should always be about the movies over just owning as much as possible.
I done this with vhs in 2002 to 2006.
Utter waste of money and time .
Looking back now it fueled depression
A little time gives some perspective doesn’t it.
I think that’s what started me thinking about this habit of accumulating. I worked away from home for a long period of time. I didn’t have any of this physical stuff with me… I was fine… I didn’t really miss it.
I sometimes wonder if Imdb has any part in all this, for others besides myself.
At least I had a phase ”gotta get my 2000 rated movies milestone done while I’m at it.”
Then there’s the whole ”oh this and this one is a high rated movie, gotta get and see those, old/new movies” before you know it you have accumulated a list of 100 movies/shows to the imdb watchlist
So, in a imaginary world where imdb did not exist.. would it mean less hoarding?

Who's this younger fella? Where's Phil gone?
😂 beard be gone… for now.
And don’t forget. It’s Phill with a Double L 😜
@@PhillwithadoubleLWest Side Story was very good. Something a bit outside the norm. I would also see Ready Player One for the references.
I have zero regrets from my DVD/Blu-ray purchasing, I haven't been neglecting my financial obligations, and I haven't filled entire walls with shelving to hold my collection.
You’ve done well to keep your collecting within those boundaries.
I’ve slipped into several of the ‘problem’ areas over the years.
You’re not an addict until you start buying Criterion box sets while high on meth
I want to comment with a laughing emoji but can’t 100% tell if that is from your personal experience 🤷🏼♂️
Hope it was a worthy box set for you if it was… Godzilla maybe ?
