I have struggled with a lot of the same problems. I have set more and more limits on myself. limiting myself with how much I will spend, how many I buy online, limiting what kind of releases I will buy and from where I buy them, and I feel this helps. Things are so easy to obtain these days that you need to set up your own limits because there really isn't any. Still things can get out of control and it is important to buy things that you will watch and watch more than once.
@@TombHorror I need to learn to consider things a little more. With a blind buy I would pretty much just keep the title on my shelf regardless how much I enjoyed a movie. Now, I try to consider if I’d watch it again or if it’s a worthy film to keep in the collection. There’s that much new stuff always coming out that the reality is, a large portion of the collection as it stands won’t get watched again.

It a real shame that so many movie collectors only talk about collecting, slip covers, packaging etc, rather than discussing movies. So many Blu Ray channels on TH-cam are now downsizing their collections like it’s some kind of trend. Back in the day of early internet, people actually discussed movies of all types on forums, sadly those days are gone. Let’s get back to having conversations about movies of all types, classic, silent, cult, exploitation, horror, comedy, westerns, drama, fantasy, sci-fi, martial arts, art house etc. I have got rid of about 400+ movies over the past year, I now mainly collect older movies (cult, exploitation, foreign language, horror, western etc), as modern mainstream Hollywood have become a tad boring with endless sequels, belated nostalgia sequels, remakes and superhero movies. So many Blu Ray collecting channels just focus on the ‘latest big budget release’ which I have very little interest in, they go on Blu Ray hunts like they are looking for rare and interesting movies but all they do is buy the latest Hollywood mainstream movies.

There’s different types of collectors out there. I’m in the category I just care about owning the movies. I don’t care about fancy packaging if the price is so much higher than a standard release. I like cool packaging but it’s not the reason I got into collecting movies. For me I got into the hobby only to collect 80s movies because it’s the stuff I grew up watching and it’s what I like. so I just wanted to have the movies in a good format like Blu ray. I would be perfectly happy if all the movies had standard cases. I try not to care too much, I allow the movies to get shelf wear, I try to think like a regular person would. I find that I enjoy the collection more when you’re care free, have a casual collector mindset.
That's right, there are different types of collectors. I also belong more to the category of films that shaped my childhood and youth, 80s, 90s films that I have the most in my collection and it doesn't necessarily have to be a 4K and I'm out of the special editions anyway :)

So I collected most of it second hand. Facebook marketplace/ Ebay/Goodwill, resale media shops etc Now that I've collected nearly everything I wanted, I just buy the one off's as they come out. Instead of giving Disney plus money, I pre-order Deadpool & Wolverine. But usually I stick to sales on new releases unless its something I really want to see right away. Picking your favorite genre is a good way to keep the monster at bay, and just pick up those one off's (like Yellowstone) that you just absolutely love without buying every western that was made for the sake of it.
@@synergil3605 definitely a good way of building your collection back up. We don’t have to just pick up the new releases straight away. I also plan on moving in with my significant other by the start of next year and space will be limited. These were two valid reasons to vet my collection and sell off what I can. It has taken me DAYS to decide which titles to part with and which to keep. My 3,900 titles have now been whittled down to somewhere above 1,000. @@filmpositive6601 it is a tough process getting rid of titles after you spend so long building a collection. Personally I feel better for it. You get people who buy endlessly and then turn around and start ditching DVDs and Blu-Ray's because they don't have space or they don't know ?why? they bought titles that they don't want to begin with. I don't have sympathy with these people. You buy a film or TV series to enjoy it, not to watch it once and then sell it off. These days, it's about keeping up with others and trying to buy the latest film. @PhillwithadoubleL that's right phill. People are just too suckered in with buying stuff without thinking twice. Everything I watch is what I want. There's nothing that I don't want. I have two friends who buy stuff and still haven't watched it. One friend bought indicators Christine Ltd, and it's still wrapped up since 2016. He has stuff that he said he'll never watch, then he flogs it off on eBay. I see people on TH-cam who buy a box set and only watch one film in the entire box set. Mad. You can't take this stuff with you after you leave this mortal coil. It likely ends up in the dump or sold off to other people.
I know the answer for me personally, I collect because I love films. I buy what I like and that's it. I open every release and appreciate all it's content. I've upgraded some films from VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K etc. But I've never bought the same 4K twice just for the packaging. Some months are pricey, others not so much. It really depends on what's coming out. Of course ownership does play a part and limited editions are nice, otherwise why collect them. But I never buy films for the sake of quantity, or a limited edition. It's about having a collection that means something. That's the bottom line. It's a shame lots of people fall into this trap of buying every Second Sight limited edition for example. I would get zero satisfaction out of that. I think at that point you need to ask yourself, why am I buying a bunch of shit films. That's a waste of money and space in my opinion.

I stopped buying BD’s during Covid lockdowns. It coincided with, ‘am I going to have to start all over again transitioning to UHD?’ The answer was, ‘no, no I’m not.’ I’m of an aged where I’ve done this too many times over the decades, from VHS-LaserDisc-DVD-BD. Enough. During COVID, I bought an Apple TV4k box and to be honest, been more than happy with it. I only buy titles, legacy titles in particular when they are dirt cheap and get the newer 4K releases for a fraction of the price of their UHD releases. The physical disc collection always felt like it was threatening to own me and my ever dwindling shelf space so it was quite liberating to be free of all that to be honest.

Im also not buying films just because I have earlier films in a series either if I don’t like them. I love Robocop 1&2 got the 4Ks of them but no chance in hell I’m getting the third film even if it’s an incredible film transfer as I can’t stand it. In the past I had the trilogy on dvd and then Bluray but not doing not now. If folk want to just buy the lot that’s up to them of course nothing wrong with that.

It has taken me DAYS to decide which titles to part with and which to keep. My 3,900 titles have now been whittled down to somewhere above 1,000. Think I'll keep going until I have only the ones I could never part with and some that I will want to revisit on special occasions. Didn't realize it would be so tough. Looking for that quality over quantity and tailored to my tastes
@PhillwithadoubleL that's right phill. People are just too suckered in with buying stuff without thinking twice. Everything I watch is what I want. There's nothing that I don't want. I just think it's gone beyond a joke! Some people have plenty of disposable income to spend, but they really need the vast majority of it.

Some of the 'Exclusive/collectors 'LiMiTeD Editions' will stay complete but only the Special ones...
@@OzzyMandias I’ve seen a few folks doing that. I generally keep both as different players in different rooms but completely see why you’d do it… cash back for other purchases then.
I’m trying to keep my limiteds now to stone cold classics… well, stone cold favourites for me I mean !
@@PhillwithadoubleL I even repurpose old Steelbooks, whether Blu Ray or DVD, some of them still look great and as you say 'they're only sitting on the shelf gathering dust', I have some choice 4k sets but I'm getting more thrifty by the day...
@@OzzyMandias some of the older steelbooks still have incredible artwork. 100% with you for the repurposing.
Happier with my recent purchases this time. All a little more considered in how much I actually wanted them.
@@PhillwithadoubleL If I buy a 4k disc for say £5-7 and slam it into a DVD steelbook I bought for £1.50, then my Steelbook edition itch is scratched...
@@OzzyMandias bordering on genius to be fair !
I need to cut down. I own 1500 movies and mostly all steel and mediabooks. This has got to stop 😊
@@karstenquast7503 if you’re ok with the number of titles then you’re good. If you are feeling overwhelmed as I do… it worth having a look at what you have and the reasons why.
The double dips / the crappy sequels / the movies you have because they’re rare etc etc. I couldn’t find good reason to justify keeping a lot of those sort of things to myself so a lot of those went.
@@PhillwithadoubleL it takes guts man as a collector. Its a passion and my problem is that i always find a reason to watch any movie, even the crappy ones 🙈. The main question is: Where do i draw the line?
@@karstenquast7503 I’ve found myself sometimes checking if the things are still easily available. Can I buy them from an online store / from the pre owned market / digital streaming etc etc. it somehow makes it a little easier to clear the crap.

Im the same with audio music ...ive so manynow ..thousands of cd.. Might take me a few years to listen to them
@@colinbleach9390 my dad was the same with audio CDs, can’t help but wonder if that’s part of where my collecting comes from. He still has masses, he’s digitised most of them so generally they just sit on the shelf doing nothing. Maybe some of us will end up doing the same with movies.
I think it's an obscene waste of money when you have a great release of a film and you rebuy it again, especially on overrated 4K.
@@paulconway384 4k doesn’t seem to make enough difference on so many movies being pimped on the format.
I’m going to concentrate more on the movies and extra features over anything else going forward. I want to love delving in to those extra features again.

@@Music.Movies.67 that’s the issue with massive collections, all the new stuff that gets in the way.

Yes ! I purchase all my movies, music, books, video games & comic books digitally
@@T-M-N-T fair play. I know quite a few folks that don’t have physical media players anymore.
Do you ever get addicted to buying the digital versions of things just to have it ? I see a few people with huge STEAM libraries of games due to their pretty amazing sales.
I’ve just lost access to some of mine. The tiles are sat in my library but if I click on them, I can no longer view the movie
@@MetalSamantha what platform was that on ?
If you are culling make sure you have the same film in your collection. Otherwise your culling could be setting yourself up in a trap. I have now lost that film and you will build up withdrawal symtoms for that film and others. In effect you are making your addiction worse.
@@gratefulblac thus far, I’ve been kinda careful and I don’t think there’s anything I’ve regretted moving on (yet).
However, it’s made me realise that there’s a handful of titles I still want to add… so yeah, the culling has still kinda led on to me wanting more
Honestly shows aren’t that good for me to collect. Only charmed and one tree hill, and the Parkers are shows I find timeless and rewatch
@@ArabellaTales TV shows I’ve pulled right back on. Don’t go in for collecting them as much now. I know I’ll just not go back to them for many years. Nostalgia plays such a big part in some of my collection, I still have some laserdiscs. They’re boxed in a corner of the room, not being used but I struggle to get rid. Sometimes consider if I just need therapy to help me along with the addiction to keeping these things.

Try collecting vhs then you will really know what pain is😂😂
They usually take up more space and bring in mould with them as an added bonus.
If you are having buyers remorse or not enough time to watch what you've bought, then its time to slow down.

If I’m being brutally honest, this last week of so. I’ve been looking at picking up some VHS. Big box rental types. Stupid mind convincing me that they’d look good on the shelf. Collector brain is back on form with silliness. I don’t think I’d watch a VHS again, certainly not buying a player and CRT just to ‘try’ again
@@PhillwithadoubleL If you buy a vhs, curiosity might get the better of you.
Just saying vcr's are very cheap. I picked one up for 35 pound and is decent. Picked another for a fiver in a charity shop and plays perfectly.
@@sparkstron73 now there’s another rabbit hole.
There’s an event at the 80s video shop in a couple of weeks ‘Tapestock’ they’re having a bunch of traders for VHS (and likely other nostalgia). I was going to go along but my current mindset… it worries me 💰 💰
I stopped buying BD’s during Covid lockdowns. It coincided with, ‘am I going to have to start all over again transitioning to UHD?’ The answer was, ‘no, no I’m not.’
I’m of an aged where I’ve done this too many times over the decades, from VHS-LaserDisc-DVD-BD.
@@seanelstob5922 I’ve been enjoying the Apple TV box and iTunes too. I’ve found a balance between the physical discs and digital copies…
I’m with you on the feeling that the physical collection was becoming too much too. Certainly feel better for cutting it back
I only buy the films I actually want now and only If the disc is good. For example if a 4K film has been DNR’d to death like True Lies I won’t buy it. I’ve stuck with that Spanish bootleg you can get on Amazon and the laserdisc. Im not buying special editions either unless it’s a film I actually love. A nightmare on elm street I like the film but I ain’t paying 45 quid for tat anymore for example. Now if Commando got such an edition I’d get it as that’s a favourite. Im 40 if I’m lucky I’ve got 30 years of life I can’t watch everything so I’ve got be selective. Went too wild in my 20s and 30s buying films/games so glad I’ve downsized. Same If folk want go digital (I don’t want to do that for my films for many reasons) it’s up to them whatever makes them happy.
